I'm doing research for a possible book on the murder of the Gard Young family which occurred in Chester in the early 1940s. I beleve the Jack Santo gang was involved; also Barbara Graham who was executed in San Quentin. A movie about her was made in the '60s ("I Want to Live")and starred Susan Hayward as Graham.
I'd like to find a source for obtaining info about the family and how the murders affected the town of Chester. My email addr. [email protected]

jack santos was a neighbor of my family, i was about 6 years at the time but remember some of the story. gard young owned a store and cashed checks for the loggers, he would go to a bank in another town to get the money and return home. he usally went alone but this one time he took his kids and possibly neighbor kids. they were ambushed near soda springs, ca. i believe there was one survivor. santos conmitted this murder with a friend named perkins. it is my understanding that the library in chester has abook on this or at least the story. my email addr. I lived in Chester when the murders occurred. I was 6 or 7 at the time so that would place them somewhere in 1948 or 1949. My parents would have remembered them more clearly, but I do remember some of the story.my e-mail [email protected]

Thank you so much for your response. The accounts as you describe them are pretty accurate in every detail. Did you get this info from the book 'Decathlon of Death' or from another source? If you know of someone who was personally acquainted with any of the people who were involved in either the murders or the trial or in any other capacity for that matter, I would be most grateful if you could put me in touch. My telephone no. is in the Santa Rosa phone directory. Please feel free to call at any time.

I thought you might be interested in this link http://www.deseretnews.com/article/print/7053... concerning the murders of Gard Young and his family and the surviving child. I lived in Chester, was only 5 at the time, but remember the horror of having schoolmates murdered and how it affected my mother and father. Email [email protected]

What Loren wrote was quite accurate. in fact, the survivor, the little girl, my aunt, I believe she suffered from a head wound. She recovered from it, but remained as one witness to the murders. When her mother married my grandfather, the trials finally took place, they had to attend all and relive the story over again. Though I only see them about once a year, she is doing great now, and has many wonderful children, my cousins. It's too bad I never we hardly see each other.

The Gard Young murder with his two daughters and a neighbor boy was in 1952 in the Fall during deer season as I remember. The youngest daughter who survived and the other four bodies were found in the truck of their car after Gard had gotten money from bank in Westwood, CA to cash checks from Collin's Pine workers who shopped at his grocery store in Chester. We had known Gard having shopped in his store and happened to have recently moved from Chester and had gone through Chester that day to visit friends when we heard they were missing. I believe they found the bodies one or two days after. I have always been interested as my older brother was personally connected to that case during the finding of the bodies and Susan (the only survivor)and spent some time with her trying to elicit some facts from her memory. Later he performed her marriage ceremony when she married and always thought so much of her.

Check out your time line. This happened in Fall of 1952.

I lived in Chester at the time of the murders. I think they took place some time in the range of 1950-summer of 1952. I went to Chester Elementary and attended Kindergarten and 1st grade. We moved to Sacramento in the summer of 1952...too much snow. I recall it well because I was acquainted with the two daughters, who also went to the grade school. Jeannie(?) and Sondra. I would be glad to email. [email protected]

Hi Randy: Glad to see your note. You are right on. The murders happened like I said in the Fall of 1952 during deer season in that area. I remember for a fact as I had twins on Sept. 19, 1952, and went through Chester after they were born to show them off to Dr. Greenman (now deceased) who I knew quite well when I lived there. It was a sad, sad event and I am sure a shock to a young boy who knew the girls.

Yes it was a shock since we knew them socially as well. If you knew Dr. Greenman maybe you knew my dad as well. He worked right next door and was the town's only dentist...Dr. Mathisen. Dad and his lab man, Jim Rideout used to go deer hunting together...maybe I'm getting off topic here...

What a coincidence, Randy. I am Arline Brown, wife of Charlie Brown, and best friends with Janet(your aunt of course) and Jack Sadler for all these years. I saw you several times when you were a kid. I did know your Dad, Dr. Mathisen and your Mom better thru the years. My oldest daughter is Paula who you must know thru Gary. All 3 of my kids just spent the weekend with the Sadlers and had dinner with them at my youngest daughter, Debbie's, just yesterday. Dennis, my son, is Debbie's twin and you must remember him. I could not contact you by email and so this is of no interest to anyone but us. I will state tho that my brother was District Attorney when these murders occurred. My email is [email protected]

Hi there!

My mother used to talk about this sad incident when I was a child- I just recall driving through Chester in the late 1960's and the Young Brothers store was still there (at least the sign on the building was). At any rate, you may want to check the link below to a newspaper article about the incident, dated October 12, 1952. Good luck on your work.

Glad we finally have some tangible evidence of the correct date of these horrible murders. I attended an anniversary party in June for his aunt and her husband and my best friends, the Sadlers. I sat across the table from Randy and we renewed our acquaintance after a lot of years and discussed this case again and the coincidence of finding each other on this site. Loren_abbey please let us know how your book is coming along.

FYI-
I believe the survivor, Sondra, is also working on her own book dealing with that incident. I believe hers will focus on her family, how they were affected, and how they carried on afterwards.

Thanks for the info. I would like to get her book when she releases it as one of my older brothers was District Attorney of Plumas County at that time and he was personally acquainted with her mother and of course spent some time with Sondra during that time. I remember he spent some time driving around the area with Sondra gently and kindly (which was his natural way always)talking with her trying to get information that might help in the investigation. They kept in touch and when Sondra was married she asked for him to perform the ceremony and so I know she would remember him. He thought highly of her and the family and has since passed away. He later became a Superior Court Judge in Plumas County and later was appointed as a Justice on the Court of Appeals in Sacramento.
