I am delighted to find this conversation, I am the grand daughter of Hugh Malone, Paul B Malone's brother. I have a picture of the 7 brothers in my apartment is San Francisco were I am moving within the next several months. I am currently in Altamont, NY. I can have the picture digitized and share it if you are interested. The Family had brothers Paul, Frank, John, Billy, Peter, Hugh and Charlie. Hugh Married Winifred Moffet of Middletown and they had six children. Evelyn, Winifred, Genevieve, Leo, Raymond and Hugh. Hugh was my father. I see that my brother Hugh P Malone has posted here too.

I did not know about all the sisters. I did know about the one who went to Oregon and in my child's mind it was in a covered wagon. The story about Bessie was she never married but had a profound influence on the girls in Hugh's family by taking them to theater and other cultural events. " How's your culture?" was the quote my Aunt shared about her to great gales of laughter. The interest in culture passed down through my Aunt Winifred to me and most likely others. I also knew Grace and Edna and know Holly as well.

My grand daughter, Diva deLoayza is creating a biographical presentation on Paul B Malone for her seventh grade project. Is there any among you who might have information that will be helpful to her so she might interview you by phone. For example. I seem to recall he had a radio show in the late 1930's early 1940's I have not seen that reported anywhere. Is it true and are there recordings anyplace? My email address is winifred.deloayza@gmail.com

Winifred, I am a religious sister called Sr. Mary Franceline Malone, SBS. I was known as Peggy. My father was John Anthony Malone, son of John Andrew Malone, brother of Hugh. When I was a child, during the early 40's (and WWII), my dad would listen to Maj. Gen. Paul Malone's broadcast on Sunday, I think, perhaps around noon.
When I was a teen-ager Winifred Malone (your aunt?) taught handicapped children in a nearby public school. She would come to visit us occasionally. That job only lasted about a year as I remember.
My father had an aunt who was a nun in Brooklyn, I think. Might be on his mother's side (Duffy) as none of my cousins seems to know anything about her. When I was entering the convent, he mentioned her.

Hi Frank and Cousins,
Still looking for the other sisters of Paul B. and his six brothers. We know the eldest sister, Annie, married James Morrison in Middletown and later moved to Oregon, but what about Mary and Hannah, the two other sisters born in Ireland. And what happened to Bessie, the last Malone child. She was last known to be living in NYC with Hannah and Willie in the 1900 census. Any stories cousins??
Hey Michelle, Sorry it too me a year to see this. How's it going?!Long time no see! I think our Malone cousin Holly ( not my sister Holly, Hugh's granddaughter Holly) has info from Hugh's line, like pictures and such. Her daughter (and cousin) Elizabeth is a good friend of mine and I can ask her what she could contribute to the cause. Got to love the Catskills. The place is littered with Malones.

Barbara, I am Frank's cousin. My dad John Anthony Malone and Frank's dad were brothers of Joe, probably your grandfather. From the time he was a small child he had a bad heart.(He was also my godfather.) He lived not far from my Angehr relatives and also from Frank's family in Parkchester. Joe, Virginia and Janet, Joan (?), and the youngest Joe lived in a second floor apartment, not in Parkchester but nearby. When Joe was in his 40's my Mom received word that he had gone down the stairs, maybe to a store or out on street (fuzzy on that) and dropped dead of a heart attack. Big shock to Mom and Dad and me and my brothers. We lived in St. Albans on Long Island. One Advent shortly before Joe died, we had the two girls over to our house for a brief stay. Dad knew that Joe would miss them if they stayed over Christmas, so he and Mom drove them back to the Bronx in time for Christmas.(The Joe Malone family live at several different locations in the Bronx.)
Frank, Joe, Bernard (oldest), Peggy Merrick (your aunt), Austin (Brother George, a Christian brother)and my Dad's dad was John Andrew Malone. He distributed the milk in New York. Other brothers had the milk farm in Middletown, NY, and other brothers worked in NYC distributing the milk. I think Charley was in charge. John Andrew Malone and my grandma, Margaret Duffy Malone, both died before I was born in 1933. Major Gen. Paul Malone was John Andrew's brother. There were a lot of brothers and several sisters.

Hey Jessie! I completely understand..we're all so busy. How is your mom? We used to e-mail fairly regularly, but her e-mails kept bouncing back, so I lost touch with her. She's a great source of Malone and Kerwin information. We've gotta keep her in the loop.

I'm still trying to find out what happened to Paul B. Malone's other two older sisters. The 1880 census has a Mary Malone of the right age at a Sanitarium in Middletown. It was run by an order of nuns. There were other Mary Malones too but she could have gotten married. Then there was Hannah. She was the youngest of the three born in Ireland and I have been unable to find any mention of her either. Marriage information for Orange County, NY is pretty sparse in the 1880's. I only found Annie by luck!

We've got a fantastic bunch of cousins who are fascinated by Malone genealogy. I'm glad you have joined the "dark side" with us.

I'm looking forward to hearing more from you.

Family moved to NYC.
One of the sons Paul B. Malone went to the local Middletown Catholic school and then on to West Point where he excelled. He became a member (a major General) of Pershings staff in WW1 and received many honors in famous battles (Meuse River, Argonne Forest).
Anyone in Middletown keeping a history that I can contact?

Bill Malone here - In Ventura County California. My Granfather, William A. Malone of The Malone Dairy in Hell's Kitchen in NYC's was a brother of Major General Paul B. Malone. I have a headshot photo of The Major General and couple of the West Point Books but don't know that much about the history of the Famly. My middle name is Paul, named after The Major General per my father who passed the family collectibles along. He had a great love for miliary traditions and maintained his Commisssion in Army Reserve (Captain William Malone). His Brother, My Uncle, was Colonel Paul Malone who was stationed at The Presido in San Francisco. Frank, I will contact directly to look into more info about the family.

Hi, re the question about Bessie- I'm from New York City, have been trying to trace my grandmother's lineage - her maiden name was Catherine Malone (b. 1895 or 1896), my father used to tell me she came from a dairy family but had little contact with the family after she married (she became Catherine Malone Crockett, they later lived mostly in Hell's Kitchen area). The 1915 census shows a Catherine Malone her age living with Chas., Bessie Malone and Mary Rocheford. Alternate spelling was Kathryn. Does the name Kathryn/Catherine ring a bell with anyone in relation to being listed as living with Bessie in 1915?

Thanks,

After Major General Malone retired from the Army, he served as a radio commentator on the Second World War for a San Francisco radio station on the Blue Network. These recordings are listed in an online database, so they must be available somewhere, perhaps as wire recordings? I believe he was the first to make a radio broadcast from an airplane, perhaps around the time he moonlighted as a technical advisor to the silent film "Wings," where he supervised the construction of a mock-up of an air base.

He also went to Catholic school in Manhattan, where a certain Al Smith was a classmate. During Smith's 1928 presidential run, he offered Malone a job in Washington. That didn't work out.

I noticed a bookseller made his appearance in this forum some years back regarding the five so-called "juvenile" books written by Paul B. Malone.(He wrote a sixth one in the 30's entitled "Barbed Wire Entanglements"). If anyone is interested in them, I recommend checking the site bookfinder.com from time to time, as they are almost always available...just wait for a good price. One of them is available right now for under $12, postpaid. Bookfinder has a pretty clunky search engine, however, so the spelling has to be exact, unlike as in Google. Also, I would try all the variants on PBM's name and ranks, for the same reason.

Hi Chris,
I'm friends with Elizabeth and Paul B.'s great grand daughter. I think we've met before.
I believe Paul B. attended the LaSalle Academy on 2nd Avenue in the East Village. The structure is still there. Don't know why I know this. Could be Ma mentioned it because I used to live a couple of blocks from there.

I think I read the business about PBM and Gov. Smith in Al Smith's autobiography which I can't lay my hands on, as the Owego flood of 9/2011 took out the bottom 2 1/2 feet of our first floor and that book is still in storage...

This is the first time I have come across your update (I thought I had done something so I would know when posts were being made but I guess maybe not). It is awesome to know that my grandfather was your godfather. Sorry to say but my Mom, Janet, passed away in 2010. My Aunt Pat (not Joan) and Uncle Joe still live in Jacksonville where they relocated to not long after my Grandfather had his heart attack. Thanks so much for the info you have provided on the family. I have some information that Aunt Peggy (Merrick) gave to my Mom but not much so this is great to know.
