Hey, He "mis-stated" (lie is such a nasty word) during the Honulick trial, who's to believe him here?

I was not aware of racial discrimination at the Department during my tenure. Officer John Woodward, should have never been forced out of a firing range instructors position. I actually recommended him for that assignment because of his shooting skills. Also because he was very level headed, calm, intelligent who had that ability to instruct in a very stressful situation ( Deadly Force).

I'm still waiting to read about some huge testimony about racism in this case, and so far, I haven't heard a thing.
Sorry, but these officers don't have a leg to stand on in this case. The Town will prevail and so far, rightfully so.

what a waste of time and taxpayers money.. you'd think that after getting on the job soley because of affirmative action, these guys would just be grateful they have a job. its true that a minority with a lower test score will be taken over a white man with a higher one simply to fill quotas... too freakin bad this crap doesnt fly at the higher levels and rightfully so. defend this to the death town of greenwich. keep our department strong and honest..

First, the black and latinos are discriminated against, then its the females, and finally the gays. All of which has nothing to do with keeping traffic moving on Greenwich Avenue. In the old days, traffic moved up and down the Avenue.

Greenwich needs a gay female as Chief.

let's face it - the police department tolerated racism (if not encouraged it) and these officers now in court need to get monetary damages and promotions.

Funny. Unfortunately, we have one here in Des Moines, Iowa. She is not worth a darn. I'll tell you what.... how about we trade locations? You can move here and I will move to Greenwich.

Here's what I'm confused about:

According to the Town of Greenwich website, the Greenwich Police force has 156 officers. From the Greenwich Time coverage, it appears that seven minority officers are complaining that racism exists because none of them received promotions to 18 specialty assignments or promotions handed out over the course of about 10 years.(1996-2006)

Some of the promotions (e.g. to Sergeant, etc.) were apparently merit-based after a formal test. One would think the testing process was impartial. Even though no allegations of this seem to have come out at trial, let's assume that all 18 promotions were tainted by racism.

18 promotions or assignments in 10 years is less than 2 promotions per year. If Greenwich has 156 officers, assuming one is the Chief we're talking about 155 officers available for promotion. Seven minority officers were not selected for the less than 2 promotional spots per year. But 146 other (presumably non-minority) officers also were not selected every year.

So ... even over the course of 10 years, the seven minority officers were refused 70 times for promotion. Even if that ran out 20 years they would have missed 140 chances ... still less than the other non-minority officers (146) over the course of one year. It seems to me the math just doesn't hold up.

If the minority officers went 21 years without a promotion it seems like they might have an argument, but over just 10 or so years? I'm not sure it is really significant.

Besides, doesn't the GPD have a black Lieutenant and a black Sergeant? I'm sure I saw a black Greenwich Police Lt. "spokesman" on Channel 12 within the last year or two. I think it was when that woman was killed by her ex-father-in-law in Pemberwick.

If your numbers were completely accurate, you might have a point. Unfortunately, they're not.

Although full strength for the department is 156, I believe they are currently undermanned. Even if they are now at capacity, they were not so for many of the past few years.

There are more than seven minority officers but only those seven chose to join the suit. Without judging those who are not complainants, knowing this organization as I do, it takes courage to speak out.

Please note that although there are female officers (another minority) there are no female complainants.

There are more than just 2 promotions per year on average. In some years there can be five or more depending on retirements, realignments, etc.

There are more than 18 specialized assignments available for assignment. Even in what you (I suspect you are not a police officer) might consider a non-specialized assignment, there are many, many preferred duties that are handled by Police Officers, the lowest ranking members of the department. Detectives, Youth Officers, Accident Investigators, Court Personnel, Marine Division officers, etc. are among those assignments, not promotions, that make up a large percentage of the slots these officers say were not as routinely available to them as to non-minority officers. Officers consider even some seemingly routine patrol assignments to be advancements.

By the way, your observation about the lieutenant and sergeant is noted, but no one ever said that NO minorities were ever promoted, just that the frequency was less than others.

As I have said in other posts, the only way I can see for them to prove their point, absent some incredibly damning evidence, is to show the jury a pattern of racism by how many times minorities were passed over for many of these assignments. The timing of these incidents, along with who received the choice assignments and who was in charge, might be the key they need.

In any event I sincerely hope this trial, whatever the outcome, only serves to make a better GPD. The officers and the taxpayers deserve it.

The Honulik case isn't over yet and Walters will go down in history as the worst chief in Greenwich history.

Blacks are kind of stinky, and they lie and complain a lot. The cops were probably just fed up with dealing with it all the time.
