Is it me, or is Rome Hospital getting worse? I recently was seen in the ER and had a horrible expirience. Anytime I decide to use that hospital it gets worse and worse and I regret my decision on going there. I was in the ER for a total of nine hours. It was cold and I could not get a blanket. They couldn't even give me the remote for the TV. The nurses would not even come into the room to check on me. I could see them all standing around socializing. Before even being seen by the doctor (no doctor, a PA), the nurse tells me, "I'm going to order you some xrays." You are? Your badge says RN and not MD. It took over three hours to get my blood drawn because the lab techs were swamped and another two hours for my xrays because the xray techs were swamped. Come to find out, they only have two of each on at that given time. Really? I know that in these times, hospitals are trying to save money, but that is ridiculous. How about we all go elsewhere, then where is your money going Rome Hospital? From what I understand, reimbursements and funding come from Press Ganey satisfaction survey results. Well guess what? Keep up with the barebone skeleton crews and your results are going to get worse and worse. No more Rome Hospital for me and I will suggest everyone else do the same.

Oh I don't know about that. I spent 14 hours there once waiting to get stitches from a traffic accident after a drunk hit my car. There was a fellow there who had been in a bar fight and got his face stitched up in an hour flat. Me, I had to have almost my entire lower lip stitched back on and it wasn't even my fault.

So, yes, I would take a dog there. A trained attack dog. And I'd enjoy the results, right up until the L&B security moron tried to detain me ... then I'd just have a little fun of my own.

I used to work at RMH. Suffice it to say that the emergency room staffing is (mostly) terrible. Once you get upstairs, though, the work is a million times better, as is the bedside manor of the staff, as well as the "wait time" per patient. Unfortunately, the emergency room isn't getting any better, and I feel bad for the staff that works on the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th floors who bust their butts trying to do their VERY best for their patients. A lot of the people admitted as inpatients to the hospital are primarily received trough the E.R. their lack of charisma, mannerisms, time management skills, and bedside manner are ruining the reputation of the above floors. Step it up, rome memorial hospital emergency room! The medical field is to HELP people! It isn't to complain above patients and drink coffee with eachother, talking about who's uglier and who's more stuck up while on the job! Get busy saving a life, or at least sharing a reassurement to an anxious patient, or compassion to a sick child. Hell, get somebody a blanket WITHOUT the attitude! You could change a perspective. In turn, the person you treated with kindness could tell another about the excellent care they received at the hospital you work in. Word of mouth is key. Isn't "excellence at all times" what rome hospital employees are to strive for anyway?

By the way, I realize there were some punctuation errors in that paragraph, as well as misspelled words, and I repeated myself a time or two. It happens.

if its so bad why not make a complaint to the right authorities instead of blasting it on an ignoramus site like Topix. If you had any real brains you would know by now that emergencies come first before minor injuries,i.e.- ambulances, possible strokes and heart attacks etc.. I cant speak for attitudes and bed side mannerisms and lack of a blanket but I know they are human beings and have feelings and have some of Rome's scumbags that come in and try to get pain meds and freebies and get sick of idiots with common colds and hang nails taking time away from real emergencies so they dont have to make appointments. You think Utica is better? go try it out-youll be back-St E's just laid off 10 people and the Utica hospitals cant compare to Rome's cleanliness.

I agree with much of what you said, but if you were directing the comment about emergencies coming first in my direction, reread my comment. My lower lip was literally torn almost completely off my face. If you think that's not emergent you might want to recheck your thought process. Especially considering I was comparing myself to a man who was stitched up in about 2 hours who had a laceration approximately one inch long on his left cheek that only partially penetrated the inner layers of the dermis, versus my lip hanging off of my face by approximately an eighth of an inch of flesh. By the way, that "gentleman" received his injury by STARTING a bar fight. I received mine in an accident where a drunk hit my vehicle by crossing the center line while trying to pass me. The man who was cared for almost immediately was also admitted nearly half an hour AFTER I was and was treated as a more severe emergency. The facts? He was screaming and blubbering like most drunks do and they wanted him out of there, so they treated a less serious case first. I'm not ranting at you but trying to clarify what happened in case you were talking about MY comment.

I went into Rome and I saw a guy sitting in the waiting room of the ER with a broken collarbone. It was out of his skin and he has 3 towels to soak up all the blood. I asked how long he been sitting there he said I'm going on 4 hours now. A lady came in with 2 puncture wounds from a dog that bit her. 2 little holes from her own dog that she tried punishing him as he was eating. (we heard her convo with her husband)...they admitted this lady within a half hour of being there before this guy whose bleeding all over the place. It was ridiculous

Letting the "right authorities" no know is a joke. They don't want any more problems than they already have. They brush off everything until they can't anymore. Apparently, not having competent staff in and on the hospital floors isn't a problem to them! Unfortunately, I can not compare RMH to somewhere like St. Elizabeths, as I have only been to St. E's once, and it was for a bad car accident. I do know that they acted quickely, and when a change of shift was occuring, the doctors came in to let me know that a new doctor was taking over my case, and the new doctor actually introduced himself immediately! I was impressed. As for the "pain meds" thing, I agree with the hospital for not giving them out as much as they used to. I can understand your comment about the idiots who come in and out of that place wanting freebies. I used to work there, remember? It gets old and it's exhausting and yes, sometimes you really just want to talk shit and vent, but work is NOT the place to do it. Consequently, home isn't, either. Huge violation of HIPPA. All i'm saying is for them to just do their damn job.

the idea of the senior managment not listening doesnt change my mind-you cant get something done if you dont have a voice, I dont doubt theres issues there but assuming they wont listen wont change it either.

I agree and have also heard staff congregating and drinking their coffee but are they allowed? They certainly have their issues like most hospitals just not the same ones.

& when i've had/seen problems, I've gone to the higher ups and they dont do shit. They play favorites, and if one of their favorites is in the wrong, then the person who went to the higher-ups in the first place gets brushed off, as well as the probblem. Then the higher-ups go to the favorites/friends and telll them everything! Confidentiality my ass! The higher ups are a huge part of the problem!

Ever hear of the saying..."walk a mile in my shoes"? If an RN is on night shift, yes you will surely see coffee close by. Most work nights to raise their families during the day. Why "down" a hospital and continue to go? Don't go. It's a business loss but those of you without empathy for a person working with the best of what their provided need not come. An ER is for EMERGENCIES. If an ambulance or two show up, your broken bone waits, if someone claims a respiratory issue, your flu waits, if there is a psych pt. creating havoc that required multiple people, you wait. Don't knock someone when you have no idea what they're doing. I agree there are times that nurses are crass and cold because some do have poor time management...not all nurses. Don't make a sweeping generalization about the entire hospital and all of their nurses based on the ER or one experience. Make a formal complaint because if the "skeleton" staffing changes it would help nurses also. The hospital overall has improved & hopefully with your next visit you can see the improvement. I take pride in my care for my pt.s and hope they feel cared for. I can't speak for all nurses there but please do make a formal complaint and remember the names of people you were dissatisfied with, be specific because sometimes your complaints are someone else's also and possibly even the staff's. Good luck to you on your next visit.

I'v been there many times over the years, whether for me, my fiance or one of my 3 children...Not a singleeee time can I sayh "they busted their butt" or were concerned, acted in a timely manner or had any respect...the only guy I liked there was a gay american dude...he was nice...but that's about it...wait times are horrible. Meanwhile they are mostly "standing Around!" SOME SHOULD FIRE JUST ABT EVERYONE IN THE "ER DEPT." ONLY...Oh and the food is disgusting too!! Go to Syracuse!! Amazing food and staff"!
