As the #3 in the family, it warms my heart to hear such great words about Stop n' Chat. As one of the O'Connors, it was tough giving up our entire summer to work. Especially working with my dad every Sunday at age 12 for .50 an hour! Looking back now, I am a better Physical Therapist today because my parents and grandparents instilled a work ethic that no high school, college or university could teach! Thanks Poppy, Grama, Mom and Dad!
Thank you to all of you who remember S n' C and were our customers. We loved to hate it! I do miss those just right fries!

MANY memories and was soooo sad to see it go. I grew up in Westmont from 64 thru 76 and it was a treat to be allowed to ride our bikes to Stop N Chat. Sitting on the picnic tables outside in the sun next to Jewel (remember that???). Progress stinks - those condos are awful. Other Westmont memories: Turn Style, Scottlad Foods, Kohouts Grocery Store, Rakes dime store and Ben Franklin with its penny candy. At least the newstand it still around.
Turn Style!! What a riot! And don't forget Phlesher's and Novotny's Tavern. Think that's an ice cream shop today. Or when Trieste (sp?) burned! The Grand Opening of Jewel Village! Growing up in Westmont in the 70's and 80's...can't beat it!

Downtown Westmont isn't quite the same without the "Habitrail" railroad station, either!

Wow! What a great news story and follow-up column! It has been wonderful reading all the posts and especially the O'Connor's comments and memories. Thanks!

I have searched high & low between Austin, TX & Clarendon Hills for a butterscotch shake that would give me that burn in the back of my throat like the ones I got at Stop-N-Chat! Haven't found one yet. I miss the twin twists as well. Many a hard earned dollar cutting lawns was spent on butterscotch shakes & pizza burgers! YUM! Thank you O' Connors for the many years you sweated to give us so many memories!

I grew up in Downers Grove and would go to Stop-N- Chat every chance I could, with my family or on my bike. Reading back on these are great. One of the O'Conners said something about if a little kid came up and did not have enough money they would say " pay me next time". I had that happen with me. I tried to pay them the next time I was there and they would not take it. I come from a family of 8 kids, when we would show up they really had their hands full. LOL
Great place and we all really miss it !

My brother sister and I were always excited when my mother took us to Stop'n Chat. What a treat!

The ice cream cones were the best around. My sister and I would watch in amazement as our brother would finish off the largest chocolate ice cream cone.

I married and moved to NY, but loved seeing the store when we would visit my parents during the summer. I'm happy to see that so many other people have fond memories, too.
