Well, where should the trash of these concerned citizens be dumped?

As the phrase goes, not in my backyard.

Ok, why don't you concerned citizens then dispose of your trash on your own.

But, please, not "over the bank" or in my backyard. Not Shaw's dumpsters either.

"We want to keep the restrictions in place to make sure America's trash is not dumped in rural Rockingham."

I would be nice for the Reformer to print more facts behind a story but I know that's not their style. I live in this area where Casella wants to put in ANOTHER landfill so here are a few things not found in the article.

1) BFI Industries operated a landfill on our road from the 1950's until it reached its max capacity in the mid to late 90's.
2) The trash from this region goes to Claremont to the incinerator. We all have paid for this through higher fees so our garbage already has a place to go.
3) Casella gets huge money to take NYC Metro area trash to a select number of landfills. This is big money so they are always looking for places to develop. This landfill would be for their trash not ours.
4) A group of area citizens purchased properties to protect another landfill from being our neighbor. They are paying taxes on that property like anyone else. That is know as "putting your $ where your mouth is".
5) The area south of the current landfill is rated as the best and most important bird habitat in the entire State of VT. Furthermore it is the only section of the river that us locals can enjoy as the rest is inaccessible from the train and private property owners.
6) This area has been slated for a State Park or some type of wildlife refuge. It could and should be partially developed into a huge campground to help attract much needed visitors to Rockingham and the area.

Some of this is fact and some is assumptions but the idea that we are NIMBY's is bullshit. One landfill on our road should be enough for a while don't you think?

I agree with you, except I think it was old landfill was one too many. It ruined the lives of some people and spoiled property for others. I remember it as a nightmare for some.

Actually I don't believe BFI bought it until the 70's. I think Harry K Shepard started it, but I may be wrong. You are also right about the big money thing and other peoples trash. Bigger is not always better and that certainly is the case with dumps.
