Court roundup

Full story: Brattleboro Reformer

A Landmark College student who was accused of sexual assault last October took a plea deal Tuesday, pleading guilty to the amended charge of "prohibited act." Reed Stewart, 19, of Libertyville, Ill., appeared in the Windham Criminal Division of Vermont Superior Court and was sentenced to 11 to 12 months jail time, all suspended with a three-year ...

"Stewart was cited after a fellow student came to the police with accusations that he had sex with her in her dorm room against her will.

Court documents indicate Stewart admitted that during consensual sex with the 18-year-old woman, she asked him to stop and he did not within a reasonable amount of time"

What was the big deal here? We don't know all the facts--like what type of sex they were having, what was the nature of the woman's consensual permission? Are we going to have to have both parties sign an agreement, possibly with a witness before sex occurs?

The other thing that bothers me is that the girls/women never seem to get in trouble and there are a lot of women equally culpable in these situations. IMO the man loses just as much in casual sex as the woman--in terms of self-respect, squandered physical energy and usually something monetary. There should be frequent and frank discussions on expectations in a developing relationship for all concerned. Unfortunately, colleges are often a place and a time of "experimentation" with sexual partners without fully considering the consequences.

Joe, are you talking about the more extreme examples, or you you believe that all casual sex means a lost of self respect, energy and money?

How about "casual" sex with the same friend (or two <g>) many times over the years? Both folks very much enthusiastic about it?

Or is it really the whole "out of wedlock" thing that ruffles your feathers?

We have a lot of police blotter listings, almost always of men in sex crimes. I believe there are women equally guilty. A nympho who forces her sex on a guy, he asks her to back off, if she doesn't stop doing what she is doing, does he report it to the police, take legal action, etc.? Why not?

Some women could be registered as sex offenders who are just as provocative as the men. Look at the US Attorney listings state by state. All men with various "crimes". Women look at porn, too, they are guilty of seducing boys and young men leaving them emotional wrecks, quivering masses of flesh.

Legal solutions to these problems are not good IMO. It is supposed to be a deterence. So they make an example out of someone. The system is biased against men. We rarely see women arrested for indecent exposure, always the men.

I'm reminded of an old story told by Groucho Marx:

Groucho (to pretty lady at dinner): Would you sleep with me for $52 million?

Pretty lady (laughing): Of course!

Groucho (leering wildly): How about for $10?

Pretty lady: Mr. Marx, what do you take me for?

Groucho: We've already established what you are. Now we're just haggling over price.
