Put more cops on the street not in the station.

Marcus you vote no on contrats then spend, spend, spend, for the cops, what were you promised!

"Kearns will earn $78,718 in base pay annually, up from the $68,434 he earned in base pay as a captain. Police officers receive additional money in stipends and incentives on top of their base pay."
Honestly, does anyone think these people are earning this money? The problem with Fitchburg is the bureaucracy and paying for inflated salaries. More money down the drain. Maybe they could fix some potholes instead... not to mention turning on the streetlights...

Amazing. Even Fitchburg promotes to fill the holes in the Police Department. Mazzarella made an acting Captain on the Leominster Police only after being pressured to do so. That was 15 months ago. He was supposed to fill it through an assesment center. He has not. No acting Lt. was made to fill the open slot. Why the constant hatred and disregard for the PD mayor? Buy them a building and then don't do anything to make it into a police station. How much longer will the city have to put up with your petty little vendetta. Resign so we can move forward.

His salary is well earned and deserved as are most cops. You cop haters amaze me, it amazes me even more that someone would want to be a cop in Fitchburg and protect aholes like you.

I think it's safe to assume you've been arrested a few times. Don't do stupid things and then you won't have to go to criminal or traffic court.

Phil is a good guy. The problem with this whole thing is the chief had him wasting his time this summer riding around getting estimates on the damaged cruisers. Seems like a huge waste of a captains salary. The chief is a dope for not using his resources the proper way. The list of his BS goes on and on. He gets a new contract for 20k more when he threatens to leave. Sounds like Randy Moss. Soon I hope the city wakes up and votes in a Mayor who cares more about doing it right instead of looking for her next photo op. The city is awash in crime. Gang activity, big time drugs, shootings and prostitution. It has only gotten worse. Why reward this chief? Because he does what the mayor tells him.
When will the S&E do some real reporting and tell the story. They are afraid of losing access to the Mayor. Don't worry, she is only using you to promote herself.

The previous Poster is bringing up some very valid points.

Anyone who has spent anytime whatsover in Fitchburg can plainly see that Drug Dealers have very little fear or concern about the FPD. I have witnessed unchecked drug dealing activety for years and years. And, the Prositutes who walk our streets don't seem to be too concerned about the fuzz either.

The City is overrun with criminal activety; and somehow we are making sure that there are plenty of promotion opportunities for our lawmen; safely within the 4 walls of the staion house.

What a waste of Taxpayer dollars. We need to reduce the amount of desk jockies working safely out of harms way in the station house; and get more cops out on the streets. Fighting crime; like we are paying them to do. And, risking their lives for us; like they all make believe they are doing.

This is an outrage. The police unions have tied the hands of the Taxpayers and of the City Council Members; making damn well sure that we maintain status quo on the high paying; safe; office jobs at the station house.

Again, we need more cops out on the streets. Look how many promotion opportunities this story mentions. And, not one of them has anything to do with stepping up to the crime problem or the criminals.

By the way Folks; stay tuned. I am going to post the actual pay that Kearnsie Boy earned in 2008; but I do not have it with me today. You can rest assured that is a hell of a lot more than the measley $68K mentioned in this story.

Don't let this bunch bamboozle you!

I do not begrudge the police one dime that they make. I have been the victim of crime in Fitchburg and have nothing but respect for the police. They were respectful and helpful with my case. They lay their lives on the line every day.

All cops do is lie, lie, lie? Great! So that means that Fitchburg is NOT full of crime they are all just making it up? OUTSTANDING!!! so all we gotta do is dissolve the entire police department and miraculously Fitchburg will be one big happy place where everyone gets along! I never realized the cops were the PROBLEM not the SOLUTION.
And Darn Tootin, blame the Constitution and the court system for establishing rules and protections for prostitutes and drug dealers. Most times when the cops put in a ton of hours trying to catch a few of these dregs, the courts let them go on technicalities. Drug dealers and hookers learn the game quick and stay clear of what will get them caught.

My neighborhood tries to keep things as safe as possible by reporting any suspicious activity to each other, watching out for one another and if it calls for it...notifying the FPD of anything questionable. The couple times the FDP has been called to investigate something that made the residents nervous it took them over ten minutes to get here. And we live a mile from the station. It seems like the response time should be better, no?
