It is never good when someone dies, but in this event history will not repeat itself. The Westminster PD is still recovering from the loss of one of their own in a simular event 10 years ago. This time the outcome is different and it will not drag though the courts with the suspect eventually getting a slap on the wrist for killing a police officer. The men in blue do their jobs. The men in the black court robes could do their jobs a little better.

Great job by the police. Recognized that this idiot was wearing armor so they shot for the vulnerable points. Kudos to the police. Shooting a person has to be the hardest decision to make, but they probably saved other lives by taking this nutjob out.

He being a correctional officer really has nothing to do with this situation. It appears that the police did everything by the book. You don't need to be in law enforcement to get a gun and anyone can get a bullet proof vest, there all over ebay. This all started with a very angry man with domestic troubles. It's unfortunate that a situation like this will bring out all the monday morning quarterbacks and cop haters. This could have turned out much worse had the police not acted the way they did.

Westminster has been in this situation before, this time they did not let the courts fail them, and ended the threat. Great job.

Too many guns in too many hands...a correction officer should leave his weapon locked up in a safe place (home or work)...this event needs to be made very clear and very public...we need to know how this happened and why it happened. It seems like some kind of cover-up is taking place.

as much as alot of people hate cops and watch their every move, there alot of cops who follow the rules and treat the citizens with respect and are true professionals. I was in the service for many, many, years and was in some wars, police actions, armed conflicts, whatever you want to call it,its a real reality check to know that this is the day you could die. cops go through the same thing,we see signs every were that say support our troops lets support our troops that keep our streets safe to the best of their ability. otherwise it be like the wild west all over again. shooting who ever pissed you off. good job wpd

Quite simple, using a hollow point bullet which i'm sure LEO utilizes it would disperse inside the leg rupturing the main artery. The culprit more than likely bled to death as it took 3hrs before they discovered the body.

1. Deranged, angry alcohol induced man opens fire on police officer(s)
2. Police Officers return fire hitting deranged, angry alcohol induced man in leg.
3. Deranged, angry alcohol induced man dies in his own pool of blood.
4. Cover-up not found.
well done

A femoral artery runs down each leg and these are large arteries. If one of those arteries is hit you can die very quickly... minutes, not hours.

Did Membrino have very large fat legs, making them easy targets? Or, does the WPD have some sharp shooters in the ranks?

Good job, WPD. Another wacko safely taken care of. Again, good job WPD!

This poor guy really got screwed. He goes out for a few dozen drinks and holds his gun off to the side so that no one gets harmed by it while paying his tab. Then, after leaving a nice 4% tip he gets followed to his home by the Westminster PD. All because they had nothing else to do. Then, he gets dressed in his war gear to surprise his honey when she gets back home. A game they like to call "Camo chases the Camel toe." And while putting out his garbage cans, he see's a raccoon that's been bothering his family and shoots at it. The cops see the 'coon also and try to help out. He mistakenly gets hit when the raccoons family also opens fire. Talk about being in the wrong place at the wrong time.

Now maybe Westminster should get around to paying the cops the overtime they've owed them for how many months now?

Guys are supposed to face bullets but get in their paychecks - what the hell is that all about?

If you get hit on one of the major arteries it won't take you long to bleed out...probably less than 20 minutes. If the damage is bad enough it probably wouldn't have mattered it this took place in the hospital parking lot.

Though support here seems primarily positive, for any naysayers out there, out to find fault with law enforcement here, please place yourself in a dark, wooded area, with a suspect you know to be armed and observed to be unstable (unstable enough that a bar where you are a report "regular" feared for your safety)... get shot at ... THEN tell me what they should have done. And when you are done, be sure and tell the family of the cops that put themselves in harms way that you think they were wrong. Then, please, feel free to judge.

You right, guns do kill people, the bad guys. the guys who commit a crime, especially a violent crime or a crime with a gun need to be stopped point blank. that is why honest citizens carry a weapon, for self protection as well as protecting the stranger who you happen upon being assaulted, stabbed, tortured bleeding, robbed, car jacked, punched and kicked etc. Time is always prevelent and never on a victim's side. you the armed citizen are the only answer for the victim, no if ands or buts, your moral duty as well as your state mandated law of "good semaritan" dutifies you to come to the aid of a victim. Good semaritan work is not only for performing CPR on a heart attact person you come upon, it is also for protecting a living and "in progress" crime victim, even if it means you using your LTC firearm to do so.
thank yous are not warranted, only the fact that you saved a victim is thank you enough. So for you who dares to question the fact that guns kill, I reply you bet ya!
