Rattlesnake Island Revealed

Sep 10, 2008 | Posted by: roboblogger | Full story: Free Times

All Matt Boggs wanted was a cool job. And what could be cooler than working at a private club on a place called Rattlesnake Island? Boggs was familiar with country clubs.

Wow what an article! The happenings and people associated with Rattlesnake Island sound bizarre. I've often heard the wild rumors about it when I dock on South Bass, but I would have never thought it was so weird there. The mafia wannabe Chef, his odd sounding wife, foreign women, burning their garbage, and revealing secrets regarding Bob Serpentini's sexuality! If I was this Boggs guy I would have left immediately after finding out about having to share his tips with the grass cutters. At least we now know what really is going on up there. I'll never buy a car from Serpentini again, what a clown.

I have been to Rattlesnake Island three times as the guest of a stamp collecting friend there and have never seen anything akin to what Matt Boggs described. It sure smells like sour grapes to me.

This story is not surprising. Boggs, like many others, get hired into what appears to be a rad job-- only to find out that it is not what it seems-- and get fired for no apparent reason. If I were Boggs, I would have thought twice before I agreed to take the job. I am not surprised of the conditions on the island. The rich have their toys while the workers are the little guinea pigs treated and marginalized as second rated (if not lower) humans. This is a story made for a tv reality show. One has heard of Temptation Island, this Rattlesnake Island sounds nothing more than a lust island where rich capitalists prey upon unsuspecting foreign women. It is the classic case of things don't always appear to be glorious. Now I know why it is a private island... the upper bourgeoisie doesn't want anyone to know what is going on. And to echo the sentiments of Mr. John Newman, I will not be buying a car from Serpentini.

After reading about Boggs' experience I feel ashamed to be American. If our jobs are not going over seas they are being taken over by non-citizens regardless of region. Serpentini is tratior to America and should be run out of town.

Call me a New York skeptic but I think this whole thing is a put up job. I knew Ralph Dietrick the Island Airways pilot who flew the air mail postage to these islands and from what I see there is no real magic here. It smells like an urban myth. Secrecy ? Intrigue ? Mafia ? You would think there is a berried treasure there from all the roomers. Heavy wealth ? From a secret membership list ? Give me a break ! Maybe it's just a marketing ploy to sell stuff.

Personally I can care less about Serpentini's bi-sexuality, but the thing that I find upseting about this story is the hypocrisy. Serpentini has for years fostered the "American and Proud of it" theme in his commercials. Why does he not hire Americans on this island? Interestingly, he would not be interviewed for this story. Truth does not fear investigation. I suspect this is not the end of the REAL story and practices that go on up on that island. I'll be looking forward to the day when all of this see's the light of day. Buy another car from Serpentini? HA! Not on your life!

I believe we need to keep an eye on this island club this summer. Perhaps the department of INS could investigate that these Europeans are indeed legal to be working in the US. I doubt they are.

To all of you speaking about the wonderful Rattlesnake Island....cease and desist with the negativity. As the past long term manager of Rattlesnake and neice of the former owner, please allow me to recommend you get your facts straight before posting false and slandering commentary. The island has, yes, always been the topic of mystery and intrigue in Lake Erie. The existing members/owners do a superb job of directing the operation. Each are excellent business people in their own right, nearly all having fostered their financial wealth through hard work and determination.

So, to all you dissenters, just leave it alone....try a little hard work and determination in your own lives....perhaps you will like the results.

And to the gentleman speaking about the illegality of the foreign young men and women working as seasonal associates on the island...I hate to rain on your parade, but they ARE legal and certainly have all the necessary documents to work in the US for their summer stint. Unfortunately, and based on years of results and findings, American college folks have had no desire to jaunt out to an island, away from friends, cars, parties, etc, etc, to work...shame, but true.

Well, to be perfectly honest, Rattlesnake Island, and all who reside there, are definitely up to something in my opinion. Now, I can understand the need for privacy in a private society, but there is no need to fire someone, like Boggs, on such ludicrous terms. It seems to me that Serpentini has a lot more going on there than meets the eye, and i would not be surprised if someone were to discover criminal acts being committed there.

I was at Rattlesnake once with a guest who is no longer associated with the place. At any rate we were both discreetly asked if we were need of female companionship during our weekend stay on the island. I'm guessing the Asian woman who asked us this question was referring to the European female staff that was working there.Of course we did not take her up on the offer as I'm and my friend are both married. So yes this place does offer anything to their clients as advertised.

I'm just glad this place got exposed for what it really is. Shysters, pimps, and thugs all run by a crooked car salesman. I'll be sure to tell my friends @ Gross Point Yacht Club this story.

ASre all serpintinis as stupid as you. The things these people mention are second hand from a scene article posted in 2000. In the article they interview a young man named Boggs who worked on the island and was let go. He is therefiore a first hand eye witness and the only crediable source of information coming out of the island. Who carries 10,000 in their pocket, try a lior of people you idiot that is like nothing nowadays....Or how about someone who can afford 100 to 200 thousand for a membership maybe they would carry 10,000 huh... Oh ya your uncle is so presteen he is just above any wrong doing... Does this guy live in rality? is he like 13 years old? has he not read the papers in the past 6 months......? Well if Bob is so clean how come he backed out of the interview about the island with scene magazine? Or what about how the Ohio Board of labor secussefully sued island members for trying to steal their emoployees retirement funds? Wake the fuck up kidd......

Well if there so legit honey, then why are they being imported form across the pond? Doesen't sound very American to me, does it sound American to you? Why did the U.S. labour bureau successfully sue island members if everything was kosher on the island, You've been working in slave like conditions so long that you have forgotten what it was being free was like.....

There needs to be a full investigation regarding this island club and car dealer. After reading this article I'm alarmed there has not been one as of yet. How they have been getting away with these things is beyond me.!

Odd things occurred. It was *never* fun to work there as 100+ hours a week were expected by staff without the benefit of overtime pay.... Many secrets regarding who was sleeping with who among members/staff/guests of members. The place is filled with disgusting bugs that normally exterminators come in to eliminate. Member tipping was, generally, poor compared to when working on South Bass and waiting on them there, not Rattlesnake Island.

Jacks Birthday party was the best. A lot of his friends bought two each of various animals and called the island Jacks Arc. I had the pleasure of flying the donkeys in on the Otter. Fun times and great people in the late 70s and early 80s. Best time flying I ever had!

I have been to Rattlesnake Island a couple of times this year. Most visits really were not anything too exciting (seen more action in college). I'm sure that some of the facts in the Scene article are based off of actual events, and I would imagine that some of the "facts" are way off. Whether or not you support Sep's.... business back on the hard probably won't make a difference to him (these people have so much money we don't really register to them). If it bothers you about what they do, then do something about it, but I imagine none of you will.... The important thing to do is live your own life, create your own club with your friends you don't have to be rich to do it, and I imagine most of you have a better time, party harder and see actually have better sex with more attractive women in your own life than any of the people I met on the island. Furthermore, you can actually tell people about the crazy shit you and your buddies have done.

Get on out in the lake and choose your own adventure..... or waste your life away commenting on the cheesy internet about what or what not might be going on.
