that dumbass cop needs to be fired or turned into a meter maid imagine what he would do in a situation involving maybe two or three screaming kids. He had the option of getting out of the yard did he have no backup and kudos to Mr Goddard for telling it like it is..

Lets see, a dog barking and running at me... I think I may have shot it also. It doesn’t really matter that it was a lab. I had a lab for 15 yrs and although it was mostly a pleasant dog, it got pretty upset with strangers and had one heck of a bite.

Sound like he was tired of taking that alarm call. There was no reason to shoot a dog wqhen you are bigger then it. Replace the officer. Whats next A child jumping out from behind a door?

"he would bark, he would run up, he has no history of ever biting anyone."

These are the owners own words above. If a large dog is barking and running at you, what would you think? How was the officer to know this dog had no history of biting? I am so sorry this happened, but put yourself in the officers shoes for one second. A large dog is running at you and barking.....any dog, Lab or not, will bite. If you don't think so, you are wrong. And yes, I am owned by a dog, before you ask.

NO , YOU ARE RIGHT THE BREED OF DOG WOULD NOT MATTER, I WAS JUST TRYING TO GRASP AT ANYTHING TO TRY TO MAKE SOME SENSE OUT OF THE SITUATION. THE COP SHOULD HAVE DONE HIS JOB RIGHT AND HE WOULD NOT HAVE ENCOUNTERED ANY TYPE OF DOG. NOTHING JUSTIFIES WHAT TOOK PLACE. 13YEAR-OLD PAPER BOYS/GIRLS, AND MAIL CARRIERS, METER READERS, AND OTHERS ENCOUNTER BARKING DOGS EVERYDAY. HOW MANY PEOPLE DO YOU HEAR ABOUT GETTING ATTACKED? HOW MANNY DOGS DO YOU HEAR ABOUT GETTING SHOT. THESE PEOPLE CAN HANDLE THE SITUATIONS WITH THE DOGS, BUT THIS COWARD OF A COP PISSES DOWN HIS LEG, SHOOTS THE POOR DOG AND THEN TRIES TO JUSTIFY HIS ACTIONS. TOTAL BULLSHIT

It does not matter what breed the dog was whether a pit, rot, or lab. The barking should have been heard. I am not sure why you made mention of the other breeds. Are you saying that if it was a pit or rot the shooting would be justified?

Sorry Jeff, don't know the officer. Just looking at the situation with a level head. Give it a try.

THERE IS NO WAY TO LOOK AT THIS WITH A LEVEL HEAD. THIS WHOLE THING IS IMPOSSIBLE TO RATIONALIZE. LOOK AT THAT DOG, "LARGE"? COME ON!

Sure there is Jeff. Give it a try. ANY dog will bite. Size and breed doesn't come into it. If a large dog came running at you, and yes, Labs are large dogs, barking, his owners words, not mine, are you going to just stand there and wait to see if that dog is going to bite you? Didn't think so.

It is great that everyone here has an opinion and what happened to the dog could have probably been avoided. Having said this it baffles me that so many of you responded the way you did yet our children are dying needlessly and the out pour from many of you who are not from Cleveland does not even surface. But we say Dog or Cat and your worlds turn upside down, should human life not mean more especially when it is just as if not moreso defenseless??? Can you say hippocrates it is only valid and worth all of these horrible comments on here because this is all that matters to you and maybe others just don't see it this same way. Everyone handles situations differently now before you go jumping me i do not know the officer, his family or the family of the doctor, but if they are investigating it enough said. Dick Goddard needs to stick to talking about weather and not put his own twist on these issues hence is why he went to school for weather??? Like one posted above he knows what it is like to be assaulted and we do not know ourselves if he was innocent but we have given the benefit of the doubt because it's his own business. If the officer reacted incorrectly there will be punishment maybe but then aren't all systems the same they cover their own and then when one district does something like this all of a sudden no one wants to be affiliated all the while pulling the wool over our heads and in reality are not so taken aback... Get real people and let's have this same passion for human lives, the homeless, etc. Heck if many of you were this passionate all of the time you could help police out all over the place stop the crime.

this is terrible. I hope the cop gets some help because he certainly needs it. I wonder if he would have shot a child in the yard if he saw one there. the poor dog did not deserve to die this way.
Sue his ass for sure and also the PD. these cops all think they are untouchable......

I feel that this cop has a "Happy" Trigger Finger. I'm really suprised that he did'nt take the other dogs out too, just so that he can be "Mr.Hero" of Westlake. But finding no robbery I guess he still wanted to be a hero by shooting a beautiful family pet to be his own hero. He has to live with this. Time to retire Mr. Trigger Finger!!!!!!

I agree with the Dr. that his pet did not have to be shot. I am outraged and I do not feel the officers life was in any danger. Sad when our own pets aren't safe in their own backyard.
My sympathies go out to the owner of Callaway. There should be a full investigation and maybe the police need to go over policies regarding what appears to be "agressive" pets.

The killing of the dog is unfortunate and should not have happened. I think cooler heads need to prevail on what was done and what, if anything, should be done. The above comment is unnecessarily inflammatory.
I do believe that the incident should be carefully investigated and a balanced report be made to the public through the media.
Dick Goddard's condemnation of the incident on the 10PM broadcast of March 8th was unprofessional and unnecessary. We all know he is an animal lover and supports animal rights but public condemnation of a police officer's actions without knowing the details is inappropriate.
All Labs are not gentle giants, some can be aggressive and protective.
By the way, my grand-daughter was bit by a Lab-mix severely enough to require multiple sutures. Two years later, at age 6 she is still very frightened of large dogs. If I had had my way, I would have personally killed the animal but he is still alive and acting aggressively.
AS MISTER GODDARD SAID, "SHAME ON OFFICER MORALES!" I ADD SHAME ON MR. GODDARD FOR HIS ON-SCREEN EDITORIALIZING ABOUT THE INCIDENT.
You are a freaking idiot!!!! People have a right to state their opinion. I mean, your an idiot and you were allowed to post yours. You should have been protecting your grand daughter moron. It's not the dogs fault, it's yours. Shame on you for being such an animal hater.

Dick Goddard was right on the mark for his comments. This cop is a trigger happy jerk. Fire him!

It makes me sick to think that this trigger happy cop is allowed to " defend and protect" any city. I had two labs and neither would bite anyone even when they were sick and dying of natural causes. That lab was just defending his territory and that idiot with a badge should be removed from his job. It's a good thing a little kid did not have a water pistol or he would have been shot too!!

Dr. Cooke,

I am so very sorry for your loss. As an owner of two goldens - I do know how a pet can be so special in your life. I wish a different method could have been used also. My thoughts are with you.
