First let me say that If I use improper grammer it's not because I'm an "idiot", it's because I'm tired of this nonsense. I'm an english professor. If I'm calculating correctly the students who would be reading these books are 15/16 and above. I would like it if all of you parents out there would walk into the Westhampton Beach High School and find one 15 year old who didn't know about sex. I'm not saying that it is right for them to be reading about it. That's just point one.
Point 2 - This list is not a "required reading list" as most of the "antibooks" columnists on this blog are referring it to as. In fact it is a "self-select" list. This involves the parent to confer with thier child- the student, and pick out a book to read. If the parent was really that interested in what their child was reading they could read it first or at least skim it. Then THEY could censor it for THEIR child.
It is ridiculous for anyone to think that they can have control over how every parent parents their child. Frankly its none of your business. While you want to shelter your child and keep them from reading things they probably already know about others might want them to read it and be warned. They, of course, will call each other bad parents.
POINT 3- I read this book with the "gang rape" and the situation is not how anyone has been describing it. It's almost as if the town is playing telephone and this story got twisted into a completely different one.
Truthfully the section is small, maybe one or two pages. The girl is DREAMING about DEMONS raping her. Obviosuly, unless you are the family from Stephen King's Carrie, you KNOW that this is a fairytale, and that fairytales don't come true.
The reasons for being schooled has been lost, and I think it would be beneficial for everyone to stop arguing, look at the facts (NOT what YOU think is "right"), sit down, relax, take a breath. Deal with this like civilized human beings. The real reason for being educated is not to be filled with useless knowledge like how to form and solve a quadratic equation or,(okay, I'll say it) lines from Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet. It's to be inspired to do something. It's not the place for a teacher to perform, it's to make their students perform. If we regressed a little bit, past the regents and SATs, we'd find that again.
"Education should not be the filling of a bucket, but the lighting of a fire."

Unfortunately, in time, people did not back down on either sides, and both sides suffered, They may not both know it yet, but they have. Obviously the side that was for keeping the books on the list lost the battle. But although they lost, both sides suffered defeat, and the other side will know it soon enough. Now that you've let them censor this, watch them do it again. And again and again and again. Until they hit a nerve for you and you'll hop the fence pretty quick to fight for the other side. Perhaps if you took my advice and stepped back to look at the facts you'd have realized.
