even 35 districts is far too many, how about one for each town.

Imagine that! School board members opposing consolidation? Who would have thought?! Give me a break. How do you expect an impartial decision by a board who has a vested interest in not merging with other school districts? Only in New York can you find a circumstance where a legislative body is put in the position to vote on their own future.

"In East Moriches, school board leaders reject opponents' charges that they are denying the public a voice on merging. Rather, those leaders insist that, as elected representatives, they had a responsibility to render their own decision on a referendum.":

Absolutely wrong. They have a responsibility to perhaps render their own OPINION, not necessarily their decision. That ultimately belongs with the taxpayers of the district. Just ego, that's all.

More proof that the school system on Long Island CANNOT make any changes itself.
This school board is faced with a financial melt-down and all they can do is protect their turf.
The doomsday clock for Long Island is ticking and these morons are trying to speed it up.

How about the Merrick, North Merrick, Bellmore and North Bellmore Grammar School Districts merge with the Bellmore Merrick High School District to form one large school district. Think of the tax money that could be saved by eliminating the 4 grammar school districts.

school consolidation is a long time newsday goal. in the past newsday editorialized that school consolidation was necessary to BREAK UP RACIAL CONCENTRATIONS OF STUDENTS (like the roosevelt district in nassau county) by busing them about inside of larger school districts. this plan would make long island schools more integrated and diverse. and this is still newsday's goal with school consolidation. they just no long admit it. newsday has never cared one bit about saving the tax payers money. again, in the past newsday regularly editorialized that americans were UNDER TAXED! newsday is still working on their plan to integrate long island's schools by school consolidation. remember that when you read these "stories" in newsday.

Wake up LI. We need to start looking for ways to cut our property taxes before we all lose our homes to these special taxing districts. Consolidation. Now not later.

I pay a lot of taxes, and I really wouldn't want my kids in the same schools as kids from roosevelt, etc. i don't want the guns or the gangs. If i want more "diversity", we can get it out of school.

Unfortunately, we can no longer afford the luxury of our existing school district structure. While some affluent districts benefit (such as Westhampton Beach in this instance), the majority would benefit from change. The problem is that WHB has convinced a majority of the East Moriches board (and a lot of residents) to vote against their own best interests in exchange for a false belief that their property values will suffer if they give up Westhampton Beach as a choice for their secondary education. They need only to look at neighboring South Manor to see that property values were not affected when a merger with Eastport took place and eliminated WHB as a choice. It could even be said that property values were enhanced by the creation of the Eastport South Manor merged district. I think that a Center - East Moriches merger would likewise enhance all of our property values.

But this is long island - you cannot make changes!

I want I want I want, but I do not want to pay for my wants, and I want it my way.

Merge the districts folks, cut down on the waste and abuse - which lawyer is advising the board?

We can't sell our house we can't even rent it out for a good price. These taxes are making our life to difficult. We are making a decision now. Will we just abandon this house and move to another state. This has just gotten to bad for us on Long Island.

Stupid is as stupid does.

There are about 129 separate school districts on Long Island. It is high time to combine them and get the number down to no more than 2 or 3 districts per township.

The current system is too much of a burden on the entire Long Island economy. This continued self absorbed - self interest is hurting every kids, teachers and taxpayers included.

People only want to maintain local control because they want to use their school districts to manipulate home values. There is no education benefit beyond this factor.

Wake up you bunch of morons. You're killing yourselves fo rthe illusion of "upscale" school districts".

How about 1 for Nassau and 2 for Suffolk!

There are counties in Virginia with similar populations as LI and they have 3 school districts and their property taxes are 1/3 what we pay for similar results!!!

Why doesn't the East Moriches School Board hire more teachers and administrators? I'm sure that will solve the problem.

Also, typical tactics against merging - busing, intergation, etc.

However, consolidation will not result in that. Students would go to the school closest to their home. The only thing that would changes is that the little fiefdoms would disappear and a boatload of administrators would be out of work.

Too d/a/m/n bad!!!
