Yes, when my grandmother died, I bought her house because I couldn't stand to see it leave the family. The neighborhood on the near eastside was always a little rough, even back when my dad was growing up, but it just continued to get worse. I eventually sold it because I got tired of trying to collect rent from crack and meth heads. Can you imagine the excitement, hesitation, and anxiety they must have been feeling as they got closer to Indy, and started to see the smoke and steam from the factories? All of the big buildings? The streets lined with houses? It must have been overwhelming.

Dad was a Marine. He and some of his friends decided to come here to see what all the talk was about, with little intention of staying. He said they all got hired each place they applied and had their pick of jobs, can you imagine? I love the areas of my youth around 10th street. New York and Michigan. Woodruff Place.

Are all of these factories gone? Is Ford still there? Sad for America to loose all of these good paying jobs.

Yes most are gone. Some are still here though. There was a time when you had your pick of jobs, good benefits etc. You could throw a rock in Indy in just about any direction and hit a factory of some sort. These jobs put Indianapolis on the map.

I think the name of the company my grandfather worked for was "Hy-Grade". To the best of my knowledge, they processed animal by-products from the stockyard. They lived near LaSalle and Washington St.

Nice copy and paste job Moe. I was wondering how long it would take you. We won't even go into the fact that it has absolutely nothing to do with this thread.
Moe has nothing original to contribute here, due to his lack of coherent thought processes.
So he puts forth this lame cut/paste job that he found on one his libtard websites that he lives on. This site, "Truthdig" is about as libtard as it gets. It touts itself as "Progressive", and we all know that is a term the libs now use in place of "Liberal", as they realized "Liberal" became very tarnished from the outrageous social engineering that had been, and still is being foisted upon the U.S citizenry.
The author of Moe’s upchuck, Chris Hedges, is about as far-left as he can get without falling off the edge.
So Moe, please go back to your cute little ineffective remarks, that seem to get you nowhere in this forum.

Age 12 thru 14 I was a Star carrier in the early 60's on East & Middle Drive, Woodruff place. It was a cool area to be raised.
Shame what has become of the whole area.

Interesting stories. My fathers side of the family immigrated legally to Canada in the early 1900'svia Nova Scotia - they stayed there for a single generation and began working their way down into western MA and upstate NY. About the same time, my great-great-great grandmother came in through Ellis Island and worked as a SERVANT in a house on the Hudson in upstate NY.

So much for THIS white girl family owning slaves. We WERE the slaves! Pfft....

Well that explains it all. You come from such high society roots that you can't help being an elitist.

Elitist? Should I be insulted? I mean, I'd LIKE to be an elitist, but I don't meet the financial or political qualifications. My family was made up mostly of what would be affectionately known back in the day as TIN-KNOCKERS. My dad could fix anything, make anything, rehab a room in less than a weekend, taught sheet-metal fabrication and welding at a trade school, got his GC license, and built his own home inspection, pest control, and tin-knocking businesses. Hardly elite.

Yea, sometimes sarcasm is a bit lost on me - it doesn't always translate well on computer.

It really does suck that I'll be headed TOWARD the lunacy rather than away from it. Thank GOD my father passed away two years ago. I don't think he'd have lived through a second round with Der Fuhrer. I think my family is the only Republican-leaning family in the State of Massachusetts. And I can't WAIT to try on their new Universal Healthcare system.(garrr!)

How much evidence hast pile up around my Republican base before we realize the America we had is gone for good. The right wing is so far out of the main stream our very culture at risk to be lost. These endless threads of intolerence and cheap shots makes me wonder if we have a chance hell to survive this change. We all best take some new language lessons and try to stay off those racest list.

Wasn't it great? I really miss the city. I can't even drive around the area. It just breaks my heart.I would like to buy a home down there but can't deal with crime.

Go cry about intolerance someplace else. I think we have been more than tolerant as we have watched progressive thought tear away at the very core of our country. Your opinion, of course, is different. However I can at least hope that children of today could grow up in a world like the one I grew up in. Your "mainstream" is not really mainstream. The mainstream that you think you are part of is the part of this country that contributes little if anything. As a matter of fact, your mainstream is sucking the life out of the country. In order to maintain the appearance that you are mainstream you embrace such ideology as Islam, which you really don't know anything about, but disregard Christianity, which you claim to know something about. All the while young men and women throughout history, who do not as majority share your beliefs, have fought, sacrificed and died to defend your right to believe like you do, yet you don't even have the ability to respect any point of view besides your own. Fairly pathetic in my eyes.

I am from the South. Came to Indy in the 50's. Uncles and Grandpa worked at HyGrade beating cows with sledge hammers.

But I am tried to move to a more enlighten state.

Conservative, NRA, Tea Party posts are filled with this venom of racism. I was shaken the first time I came across such crude, arrogant pontificating. Like a person who comes across an auto accident, no matter how traumatic, you can not help but stare. And like when I come across an accident, when I come across this hate speech, I stop and say a prayer for the poster and our country.

Now I post and fight back.
