A teacher in a small western Indiana school district has set off a media firestorm for her support of efforts to organize an alternative “traditional’’ prom at a nearby high school – a prom that would exclude gays.

The effort, organized by a group including some students and parents at Sullivan High School, was undertaken in protest of school officials’ decision to allow a same-sex couple to attend the high school prom scheduled for April 27.

So have separate proms. Would you want to go someplace where a big percentage does not want you there or do you just want to rub it in? We can hear or read about being gay just about every week now that supports gays. But, let one person say something against them then it will be front page news.

How is excluding gays and homophobia any different from racism and excluding blacks? It's the same thing just a different minority. Not everyone can hide being gay and why should they have to? Some people are not gay but are labeled as such. Not every gay is "obviously gay" but can be easily found out if someone were to out them. At one time in history every minority "was not wanted." How about calling the teacher what she truly is, a bigot. If she had said she didn't want Christians, whites, or straights at the prom all hell would break lose. Gay people should be able to do and participate in anything straight people do. This is 2013, the 21st century in the United States of America dammit! Just because they are an unpopular minority and religion (which is a lifestyle choice and cannot be proven) is used as an excuse to condemn them does not mean they have to accept discrimination, oppression, and bigotry. Say NO to prejudice!

They gays want to go to the prom because it is just as much their school as the straights so let the straights go elsewhere to a private property if they don't like it but they cannot legally or ocnstitutionally ban gay students from a prom. They are human beings and American citizens and what if the students didn't want black students at the prom? That would be illegal to ban them as well.

The teacher that I read about needs to be fired... The one who works with special needs children. If I were in this district this would be my #1 goal

Let no one forget that we are still dealing with children. This is their school dance. No one should be excluded, nor should any separate one be planned and any adult that is getting any type of pay from the district... You just crossed the line. Don't do yourself any favors by trying to claim free speech. Your in your position to speak for our children, not for yourself. I'm disgusted in you

Your right about dealing with kids. Educate them the way the state wants. Teach them how they should form future generations. It happen in the sixties with civil rights and now they are being taught that everyone should put their arms around a gay person and tell them that their lifestyle is ok. That is the way to get anything into law.

OK, OK. Let's start with our favorite card in the deck! THE RACE CARD! Get over it! It's 2013 and nobody cares about THAT card anymore!

Their job is to teach.... History, math, science, English, etc not hate. We do not need Children feeling as if their teacher hates them and they are not even liked in their classroom. Life is hard enough without throwing that into the mix for them. To many children commit suicide due to feeling so alone and misunderstood. This teacher is full of hate and if she didn't want this kind of attention she never would have said a word. She's a well educated adult she deserves all the scrutiny she has coming and I hope the unemployment line.

If you don't approve of gays, it is always hate. If you don't like the black race, it is hate. If you speak out against the gay marriage like chicken place did, they must hate all gays. If you don't like the color red, you must belong to some hate group. It's all about hate just because you don't approve of gay marriage or bring a gay date to a prom..

She's a public school teacher, preaching about her views of her church and the hate they feel towards hate. No child should be subjected to that frame of mind ever. They are children still finding themselves and if someone who is helping to shape their mind is one of the leaders of hate then what are they teaching?? She even stated it about her handicapped children that she teaches. I won't quote only because I don't know the exact saying. Teachers are to teach hope, I understand children can be cruel and can be disciplined for it and taught correct ways and generally later in life they regret what they did as a child to others, but she is a teacher. This isn't hard to understand. I am not hateful towards anyone. There is to much in the world. I do stand by common sense, sadly common sense isn't all that common. As you can so very often on the topix boards.

Of course gays and people who support them do not hate, right? They are just protesting.

Dale Wise, the church's senior minister at Sullivan First Christian Church, said his church turned off its fax machine and took its website offline Tuesday because both were the target of hate mail and pornographic messages.

David, I somewhat agree with you the church itself should not be held liable for its members UNLESS if it has a group of members all saying the same thing about the way their faith is taught there. Now the minister doesn't want to put his head out for them because he knows about the backlash he's about to receive. He's the leader of the church maybe Sunday morning they should change the sermon to love and acceptance of others. He of all people should know don't preach what your not proud of living yourself.

On the rest of your story, I want to thank you ;-) I haven't seen anymore since the other day. I had no idea all those petitions were out or anything. It will be interesting to see where this goes

just have a costume party and let the students and others attending dress and look like they want. that would stop the discriminating.

My point of posting this story was to prove a point. If one speaks out against the gay lifestyle, you must be hating someone. But in return you never hear about "hate" when it comes to the other side. They can fill your website or fax with hate messages even threatening and for some reason it is not called hate.

As long as it's not officially endorsed by the school, paid for by the school or other tax funds, a church group is free to have a separate, private party, call it a prom or an anti-prom or a "super secret no gays allowed club" party - whatever. Tho' they certainly look stupid and parochial in doing so.
What far overshadows that idea in this story, is the teacher - TEACHER - saying that she thinks homosexuals have no purpose in life. Seriously? Did she not stop and think that she's an authority figure where ALL her students are concerned? And that, whether she knows it or not, some of them are gay? This is absolutely a contributing factor to why some adolescents - likely insecure, undergoing a lot of changes and dealing with a lot of new emotions - have high depression and suicide rates. If things were just, she'd resign immediately in shame.

I'll bit, I suppose, against my better judgment.

It is hate either way. But - and this is the key difference - the anti-gay crowd are the ones supporting unequal rights under the law. You may propose to say, at the end of the day, we'll just go home and disagree - but where inequality is still built into the law, in direct contradiction to the explicit intent of treating all citizens equally, there is no "just go home and disagree" to be had. I'll bet money that when same-sex marriage is finally recognized across the US, you'll hear A LOT less complaining and whatever you perceive as hate from the opposite side.
In other words, don't pretend you have a moral high-ground.

The other side of what I already stated is that those asking for marriage equality aren't proposing to take ANY civil rights or benefits away from opposite-sex married couples or anyone at all. If you're already married to an opposite-sex spouse and have joint tax-filing rights, hospital visitation, inheritance rights, etc., etc., and 1100 more et ceteras, you'll still have those once same-sex marriage is recognized. No difference. Under the law,, and in the realm of things that are actually the purview of civil law and government, THAT'S THE CALCULATION THAT MATTERS.

Hate the belief, not the believer. That's what people supporting equal rights are expressing, though sometimes sloppily.

If you can "love the sinner, but not the sin" that should be perfectly fine.

I do agree completely! We see eye to eye there. I believe that in order to have equality it should be for all, no group, color, orientation should be able to promote hate and they often do with no consequence. I do not feel there should be anything "special" for anyone for every person is special. No one needs a month, day, etc to politically or socially make themselves seen.
