Couple facing criminal charges for rescuing and nursing deer back to health

Jan 30, 2013 Full story: Examiner.com 18

When an Indiana police officer and his wife nursed a small injured deer back to health two years ago, they never thought they'd be facing criminal charges over their act of kindness, nor did they anticipate being swept into an international media frenzy on Tuesday after local news outlets broke the story.

We will arrest an obviously very caring couple for rescuing and nursing a deer back to health, but we will let a drunk cop who murdered one and injured two, go free for years. What is wrong with our judicial system? Screwed up, totally. Go arrest the bad people and leave these people alone, for Gods sake.

i heard on the news this morning that the governor spoke re the incident. did this story make his hair turn platinum in color overnight???? so a law was supposedly broken by a caring couple. meanwhile over in the weed plants the illegal trappers are snickering and setting traps not caring who will step in these things. all kinds of illegal activity is going on that the dnr should be monitoring. but no bygolly...huh uh. they must try to hang a couple who helped a deer. i so agree with sounds like indiana.

The laws are there for a reason. Pen raised deer pose a significant disease threat to wild deer populations. I know everyone wants a cute little deer for a pet. I admit, that I would probably be in the same situation this couple is in if I came across a wounded fawn. However, it is the law. If it isn't enforced in this case because of its circumstances, when does it get enforced? Why do you suppose DNR was coming to euthanize the deer instead of releasing it? They were not coming to release the deer back to the wild because a pen raised deer, that has relied on humans for food is not likely to survive in the wild. Not to mention the risk of exposing the wild herd to possible disease. If this couple truly did intentionally leave the gate unlocked, or open, then that was the biggest mistake they made. A police officer should have known better. I feel for them because I am human too. I am a deer hunter, and a wildlife advocate. Finding this deer put them in a bad situation, but releasing it was nothing less than obstructing law enforcement. All of you that are bad mouthing DNR need to stop thinking about the cute little deer and look at the big picture. DNR has responsibility for the entire deer herd, and can't let "cute" or "cuddly" interfere with their job.

the deer has survived in the wild. the deer have been so overpopulated in indiana that i have wondered what percentage are disease laden. so the deer in question is probably healthier having been raised alone. furthermore, does the dnr set aside time for monitoring the health of the deer population? they were only doing what the prosecuting att told them to do about the deer lest he look like an idiot to the public re the situation. it is out of hand. leave the people alone and let the deer run. let the state issue educational booklets all over the state telling about the laws governing animals. ignorance can be conquered.

The law is the law and they broke the law. Sounds to me like this cop is a hypocrit, he thinks he should get away with breaking a law that he would damn sure enforce on any one of us. The only reason these people are making a big deal out of it is because he is a cop. I say throw them in jail, make an example out of them like this officer has done to other people.

Exactly. If it were one of us, our azzes would be in jail already..like TWO YEARS ago..when they were told to let it go. I noticed on every t.v. program they were on..not one reporter/journalist asked them why they kept it so long. It does not take TWO YEARS to nurse an animal to health. I'm not a nurse or a cop and even I know that. Since when does the law care whether "they have a good heart" bullsh!t?? Lots of people here have good hearts, so does that mean they can get away with breaking laws too?! Apparently so since other "public officals" are backing them. Ok Cville lets all go break some laws this weekend, then make a facebook page and cry a river that we didnt do anything wrong because "we have good hearts".

yeah yeah. just electrocute the couple for not letting the deer die and rot in the yard. as for breaking the law this week end; it will help the town to collect all that fine money. have a deer chili cookoff and make even more money. bambi stew.

So the law says that by saving this baby deer, this couple have endangered it's life when it's released into the wild. So....the law's solution is to murder the little baby now, instead of letting it take it's chances with the rest of the wild deer. Who makes these stupid laws?

hey, here is a solution. Leave the wildlife alone and let them be wild. Apparently Indiana Deer moms are doing a pretty good job all by theirself and they do not need our help.
