Studies show that the death penalty does NOT deter murder and statistics actually show that states with the death penalty have more murders. And think about it. If a parent reads the news and sees that that convicted murderer that the media had followed closely was just killed and says "finally that s.o.b. is dead" and is just thrilled that they've finally been executed what kind of impression does that give the child about killing? Young children aren't going to understand the difference and probably won't even hear about why the person was killed so it sends them the message that killing is OK. Then they develop inappropriate beliefs about when it's OK to kill and share these beliefs with these friends, which in a sort of chain reaction kind of way could be responsible for a significant increase in murders.

you have a point. he was 17 at the time. given 40 years for murder and 28 years for rape. 68 years total. eligible for parole in 2023 - after 37 years. so sad for such young adults. i have a 16 year old son now and it makes you wonder what in the world would go through a young man's mind - i guess you wouldn't want to know those things - i'm certain his family and friends were crushed - not as crushed as ms. harris' family and friends but still it's all so unfathomable

The death penalty WOULD deter - if sentences were carried out while news of the crime and the criminal are still fresh in people's minds.

The criminals think nothing of it because they languish in prison being fed, clothed, housed and given medical treatment for 20 years.

Given them 3 months for an appeal and then get the needles out. Better still, go back to public hangings.

I bet he killed more than one girl, probaly other bodies out there he has yet to admitted too killing
like most killers such as overstreet, they begin killing small animals , then move on to being peeping tom's from there to exposing themselves then too actually attack of woman or girls and then murder most show those signs at early ages ,so many could be locked up at much earlier ages for psychotic behavior many teachers are witnesses to this behavior early on and local juvenile halls

whats ironic is how most liberals rail against the death penalty yet same liberals slammed bush for going into afghanistan and iraq wars where in those countries public executions are the norm same for saudia arabia where they hold public executions daliy they cut off hands, arms, gouge out eyeballs and make other people watch ,they apply sharia law to it's full extent as in stonings of women and little girls,so squeamish liberals you are nothing but mere hypocrits when you speak out against our death penalty as you drive and pour oil in those engines and gasoline in those tanks big bunch of fking joe biden liberals hahaha

All of you who are on here blasting the legal system for not executing Gary Monday let me put in a thought. I was a good friend of both Gary and Amy. I sat behind Amy in algebra class and have many fond memories of her. Gary was a friend of my sisters and took her for walks pushing her in her wheelchair after she was injured in a motorbike/ auto accident. There was never any indication that he had any inclination towards commiting the horrible act that took Amy's life. None of us can imagine what went through his head that day, but I know that fear and anger can change a person in an instant into something unrecognizable. It happens everyday in many different situations. Reason goes out the window and the survival instinct takes over. God will give Gary his punishment more horrible than we can imagine. Vengence is mine sayeth the lord. In the meantime Gary has to live with the guilt of what he did, sometimes that is more unbearable than death.

Gary should have been walked out of Greenwood High School and strung up by the school flag pole. Rape, murder, and discarding her body showed his complete regard for Amy and others. Gary was not a good person and death befits him.

Oh in that case lets just let him go because everyone deserves 1 freebie, murder rape and torture. What a freakin imbecile, he should've gotten fixed long before your conception.
Do the world a favor....please don't breed, and if you decide that you deserve a freebie rape murder 1 day, please eat a bullet first, victims are more innocent then the murderers you do know that right?

Anyone who commits a crime so horrible that they deserve capital punishment, deserves torture. They should get tortured constantly, even during their appeals. The torture should be on the news, along with the details of the crime. Criminals tend to be very low IQ, but seeing the torture on the news with the crime would help get it through their thick skulls that crimes have consequences. The criminal should be kept alive as long as possible, to maximize the publicity value of the torture. If a criminal is tortured for 50 years, and it's shown on the news every month or every year, along with the crime, even the most depraved criminal wannabees will start to get the message. The news media could even do interviews of the criminals being tortured, asking them how they feel about the torture, and if it makes them regret the crime. But the interviews would have to be short, so the torture could continue.

I used to think this way until I realized that people in prison don't suffer. They have 3 full meals a day and a roof over their head. Many people in our society don't even get that. I know they are locked up and don't get to see their families, but if they have no remorse for what they've done, they aren't suffering. If suffering is what you want, don't abolish the death penalty, fight to bring back the electric chair or hanging. It's much more effective.
By your reasoning, slaves didn't suffer either. It is human nature to be free and no one is happy not having the opportunity to make choices in life, not even being able to choose what they will have to eat for their next meal. I am not defending the inmates who are guilty. Also, most people would not be happy spending decades surrounded by men who have murdered and committed other violent crimes. I'm just saying they are not living the life of riley else they wouldn't be adding years to their sentence by attempting to escape for a short period.
My main concern is inmates are released early dozens of times a year after it is proven that they have spent decades in prison for crimes they did not commit. Not only did they not commit the crime they were punished for but the police and lawyers that sent them away knew they were innocent all along and fabricated evidence. Since dozens are released each year I suspect that hundreds are wrongly incarcerated but simply don't have the means to prove it.
People howl about plea bargaining. Plea bargaining is simply how the government terrifies someone into pleading guilty to a charge which the police and lawyers can't prove.
Remember when you're on a jury, dirty cops go to prison every day. As a matter of fact, the guy everyone hated in school for being a bully is probably a cop now. About everything both lawyers say is a lie and at least half of what the cops say is a lie.
I am a conservative and I am able to educate and think for myself. I am not willing to sacrifice the freedom of innocent people in a hypocritical attempt to prove how "righteous" I am. I am a strong proponent of the death penalty but only after a fair trial and due process.
If the penalty is harsher for harming a cop than it is for the average Joe then I think cops should also suffer harsher punishment when they commit crimes.
