Experts say Walmart delivers both positives, negatives

Editor's note: Who wins with Walmart? The answer depends on whom you ask. This is the first in a four-part print series on the impact of Walmart stores on select central Ohio communities.

I am always amazed at these studies that show the average wage. They receive the figures from Wal-Mart I assume. Obviously the figures total in the higher wages of assitant managers, co-managers, dept managers, etc. The average hourly worker at Wal-Mart usually starts at minimum wage, and usually paying $1 hour more for overnight workers. But having said that, it's a job.

Its been my observation that wherever Walmart sets up shop, the smaller stores go under and even the larger grocery stores cut back their hours. Walmart has ruined a way of life for many people.

Why didn't they mention the disadvantage of the increased number of low-life clientele Wal Mart attracts. I am telling you that communities don't need to draw in these types of people. I've lived in the Northland area over 30 years and frequented it before I moved here. I have seen the vast changes for the worse from the demise of the Northland Mall, nice restaurants like the Wine Cellar, to the run of African and Mexican storefronts and strip clubs and shuttered businesses and ghost town strip shopping centers. The change in Northland has nothing to do with Wal Mart but the influx of people who seem to have little common sense or sense of community responsibity and act like hooligans has changed the once nice community to a community on a continued slide to hell. Before you bleeding hearts comment, I live it and I am just stating facts. I see it on the street I live on and in the whole communtiy.

Also, when Wal Mart moved into Bellefontaine I saw it put existing stores out of business. But that's the natural evolution. Survival of the fittest.

Perhaps in the next installment they will mention the fact that 99% of the merchandise is imported from sweatshops. People had the choice to vote with their dollars. Most people voted for sweatshops (and still do).

lots of sweatshop-produced goods at the following stores in and around Westerville and 1.,000 feet from the planned WM at Schroxk and State (are ya ready????): Kroger; Roush Hardware; Big Lots; and Marc's. I suspect NAPA up the street has some chinese produced goods but can't verify that. Farther up State Street we have Meijer; another Kroger; Giant Eagle; and Home Depot.

Wal-mart has provided jobs for many. It is the only company that someone can start as a stock boy/girl and work their way to upper management. They contiune to recognize hard work with out union bullying. Why would you think that "smaller stores or even the larger grocery stores" have lost business (if that is true)? Many american companies have switched to chinese or other asian manufacturing due to taxation, zoning, EPA, and the ever popular NIMBY actions.

Companies or brands that were all american such as, Visegrip, channel lock, portor-cable, Wilton have switched to off shore manufacturing. It has been rumored that even Snap-on, Mac Tools, and Matco use chinese stamping for wrenchs they just buff and chrome the wrenchs in the USA.

So even if you boycot walmart and buy your wrangler jeans at a local shop they will still be sewn outside of the USA from North african cotton.

Now, ask yourself what was Sam Walton doing back in 1975 east of Seoul. Did it have anything to do with making more products in America.
Now, fast forward and ask yourself if Sam Walton didn't take the hyphen out of Wal-Mart and replace it with a big single star Wal*Mart was it the same person a few years back that took the star out and put the starburst at the end Walmart*.
Think about the word rich....99% of the people on Earth ain't there. Yeap, 1% of the total population purdy much dictate very quietly to that 99% just how their money is spent.
But there's one small problem with them thinking like that cause it's the 99% that hold all the power it's in their hand when they go to vote and it be in their pocket book and purse when they go to shop.
Did you know Wal*Mart puts less than 5% foreign in all their stores in China. One can look at this in two ways. They are depriving the nice people of China from purchasing foreign made or they are doing for the best of the Chinese currency Mao(yuan) in making sure it doesn't fall into foreign hands.
Now, remember the 1975 year from above and read what Lance Winslow wrote in that article "The Flow of Trade in a Global Economy."

100% agreed. Just start looking at labels in Target, Home Depot, Lowes, Dicks Sporting Goods, Kohls, Big Lots...etc. At least the profits at Walmart are reinvested here by building new stores, providing part time jobs that are needed, and believe it or not Walmart actually uses utilities generated right here!

Manufacturing jobs are the most sustainable and long term type of employment there has ever been for most people.
I support the idea that everyone should make every effort to buy American made products, but the reality is that if you buy only American made products, you will not be buying much at all.
That's how badly we have let our manufacturing base deteriorate.

What average grocery store is better than walmart besides meijer? Here in cowtown there is no class so there are no super rich stores. Unless your one of those geniuses who wants to pay 2x the grocery prices to get 10 cents off gas, then you can pay more. Feel free to buy Chinese slave goods from any other store at twice the price, I encourage idiots to throw their money away because there needs to be less of them anyways.
