Wow. Last fall, I was brought in to Hilliard Board of Ed office to be hired in as a short-term substitute teacher. I am licensed to do this job, short and long-term, and I have a Masters in Ed from Ohio State University. Gee. If this is the kind of substitute teacher that Hilliard hired because Hilliard Schools told me that people like this with degrees from Ashland U. are more qualified than I am to teach as a substitute in their schools district; then it really scares me now who is here teaching our kids and I am paying for their salaries from my school district property taxes. I am sorry this woman has some kind of problems right now but she has no business teaching anyone's kids if this is how she behaves in public and shows disrespect for our law enforcement officers. Hope she gets the help she needs medical, legal and whatever else it is she needs to straighten her problem out. But no way should she ever step back in the classroom working with other people's children.

Honestly, if this woman by virtue of some sort of different licensure is better qualified to teach than I am with years of experience and a clean record, then I think I am happy they didn't hire me in. I would never want to be a Hilliard substitute if this is the kind of people they are hiring....I am sure it was AGE DISCRIMINATION in my case.

If this woman had a record of doing this sort of thing PRIOR to her interviews, she wouldn't have been hired on as a substitute at either Hilliard or Upper Arlington.

Honestly, I feel badly for her. I can imagine many factors contributed to the events of that fateful night with alcohol being perhaps a prime contributer. I cannot, based on a few articles in he Dispatch, pretend to know for certain what culminated at the scene, whether regarding the alleged altercation with the husband or the reported reaction to the police officers. I cannot know the history of this marriage or what role the husband may have played in the wife's emotional state that night or in her life in general. I don't know if the oftmentioned baby is her first and she is a new mother but even if not, a baby so young will play a toll on a mother's level of fatigue. There is the possibility of hormone-related depression and if this is her first child, there are additional circumstances to consider. I sincerely hope she will find positive ways to obtain any help she needs and re-engage in life with a new sense of self-esteem.

"Koffel said his client had enough breast milk pumped at home to allow her to safely drink the night of the wedding."

Should she not have kept that for her 9-month-old baby?

Gotta see their point, though. Breast milk is one of four bodily fluids that can transfer HIV.

Both statements in this story cannot BOTH be true.

Either she had enough brest milk to be able to safely consume alchohol OR she was worried about not getting to feed her 9 month old baby if she was in jail.

Personally I'd like to think that when she was sober, she was smart enough to pump extra milk for the baby, which means she was just being an idiot when she went off on the po-po, not that she was trying to prove she was a breastfeeding mother.

Otherwise, she intended to go home and feed her 9 month-old some alchoholic breastmilk.

I have taught in both charter schools and school districts and there are a lot of teachers and administrators who drink more than they should and do questionable things on weekends. Many even have it posted on their facebook accounts. This poor woman just happened to get caught. I do not drink and and when I was an Early Childhood Education major at OSU, I could not believe how my classmates in the education program drank and partied on weekends but they got away with it. We really don't know what actually happened to make this woman act this way. Her husband should have been looking out for her.

And no one wants to work in a charter school. I worked in one for a while because I had not yet been able to find a job in a school system. So yes it is true that charter school teachers are the ones that the school districts did not want. Working in a charter school can drive you to drink. Low pay and terriable working conditions. I have no idea why anyone would send their child to one.

Maybe Gene Harris will find a place for her in the Columbus Public School System? If she can come up with some sort of "mental illness/fetish/phobia" the teachers union and Gene would look out for her to make sure she is not discriminated against.

Two good points, the pressure of teaching AND the pressure of low pay/bad conditions in the privatized education system.

Everyone sees that summer break as a waste, but few that have actually been in education and "hit the wall" in May/June feel it is not warranted - both for teachers and students. That "wall", per my roughly 20 years in industry and sales, just isn't there with that sort of work. I'm betting the type of class work this woman did has extreme pressure with all the IEPs required and the issues the students may have. I know my coworker in the MDCD classes has a huge work load and pressure. No excuse for her behavior, my bet's on some postpartum problems, I wish it had not happened and I hope she can resolve the issues successfully. No snide comments coming here. Let he who is without sin cast the first stone...

The low pay and crappy conditions simply speaks for itself.

As for the partying, my personal experience is it's pretty consistent in all areas including corporate, manufacturing, service industry, and of course education. Lots of people out there drinking and screwing around. We'd just like to think the teachers might be a cut above... many are, but so are others in other jobs.

I appreciate the comments from teachers who know about teaching from the inside. Commenter #3 may be correct that the woman was struggling with postpartum depression. My ex-wife had it pretty bad after our 2nd was born, and I had a very rough 3 months, and of course it was no picnic for her, too.

Commenter #14, thanks for chipping in, "I have no idea why anyone would send their child to one" (a charter school). Unfortunately, your perspective is largely absent from the public debate over education in recent years. My son was studying to become a teacher until recently. I am glad he no longer is, given the atrociously bad political environment for teachers.
