The Walmart boo-bugs are crawling out from under their rocks. You should read the article in the Wall Street Journal last week about the anti Walmart marketing company that is paid by Giant Eagle and other large retailers to spread lies and misinformation about Walmart everywhere they try to establish a new business. Undoubtedly some of their agents are alredy at work here. Walmart will raise the taxable income in Westerville. They will add to the property tax base. They will attract more business for other vendors in Westerville.

Oh in case you are wondering, I lhave lived in Westerville for 54 years. We own and have operated a small retail service business on the edge of uptown Westerville for 39 years. I have no association to Walmart. I do not fear Walmart, I welcome the customers they will attract and the opportunity to compete for them.

Unfortunately our anti-business city management will do everything they can to discourage this progress. They apparently would rather see empty vacant storefronts than thriving healthy businesses. I hope those members of the planning commision and Council who own commercial property in the uptown area will abstain from participating in this decision.

You mean the WalMartians? I don't know if an IQ test sensitive has yet been invented to detect intelligence there. Apparently, they (and the shoppers) have very little sense of self worth. The overwhelming image I, and millions of others, have of WalMart is "filth on steroids". This phenomenon of just gorging oneself on overpriced plastic trash and trinkets spells the end of the Planet. And, the weight of the shoppers!!! 200 pounds? 300 pounds? 400 pounds? These people have no sense of limits. Just disgusting. You just do not see this disgusting obesity in other cultures. America: you're a bunch of sickos!!!

Inasmuch as a trash dump would be a VAST improvement over a WalMart, one would have to conclude that an empty building is not a problem.

I live in Westerville and DO NOT WANT WalMart, for all the reasons already mentioned above. I sincerely hope this effort fails. WalMart does not give, it only takes away.

Clearly you've had much more experience around trash dumps than Walmarts. You are a good candidate for the mercinaries who are paid to spread the lies, or are you just a disgruntled union goon organizer?

The people who don't like Wal-Mart will still go across the street, or up the street to the real uptown. Those who do aren't going to shop in Westerville at all. What has Westerville gained by that?

And I'm someone who would rather shop up or across the street. I just don't believe in forcing my decisions on others.

Do you see the irony in your remarks? WalMart is forcing a TRASHY way of life on the community but you don't have the insight to see it thusly? "You just don't believe in forcing your decisions on others", but you're totally blind to that phenomenom right beneath your nose WHEN WALMART THE CORPORATION DOES IT. A true genius. WalMart is just filth run by bloodsuckers who rob the workers blind (look at all the lawsuits against them discussed in the press!) and the company could care less that these Chinese workers overseas who make the plastic trash they sell are paid so little they're just the modern equivalent of SLAVES. Frankly, you'd have to be a total idiot to patronize an establishment like WalMart, a TOTAL blithering idiot. High minded individuals would run a business like that right out of town. We'll soon find out how many high minded individuals live in Westerville (probably not too many, unfortunately).

I love Walmart.

Most everybodyt loves Walmart. If they didn't, it wouldn't be the world's largest retailer.

The only people who hate Walmart are racists, snobs and union officials. Which one are you?

Not so SmartMom, I am not sure what type of industry you or your significant other are employed in but how would you feel if your job was threatened by a company that didn't care about you, your family, neighbors, friends or country? That is what WalMart is, they are the leading exports of jobs and leading importer of cheaply made crap. And they don't care that they take jobs from the very consumers they are marketing to, and they certainly don't care about the quality of the product they are selling to you. WalMart has taken advantage of cheap overseas labor, government subsidized manufacturing and no regulations to improve their corporate bottom line and destroy American manufacturing. I am sure that this isn't what Sam Walton envisioned when he started WalMart.

Walmart and the development surrounding it has been very successful for Reynoldsburg, Grove City, Canal Winchester, Lancaster, Easton, Lewis Center, Newark, etc. Likewise even in Whitehall, which spurred some mini redevelopment. Walmart gave a little more life to a dead center in South Columbus. The answer, therefore, is yes.

I'd rather have a vacant building than the traffic and crime from the people who shop at a Walmart.

Ever notice that taxes always go up after cities allow development to "increase the tax base." Westerville is a classic example - what were the tax rates,(income and property) in Westerville 25 years ago compared to now?

Yeah, development has been such a great thing for the residents of Westerville. That's why I moved out of Westerville to the township.

You're saying you LIKE the Easton Walmart? It is some sort of shining light of success? You are crazy! That place is a huge dump that attracts scum from the hood to the south. I went in there the other day and was one of the few English speakers. Come on Bob!

I think the real issue here is over development of the commercial market. There are more areas for shopping centers than needed. There is a Meijer right at the opposite end of town and other stores close enough in the vicinity that really makes Wal-Mart unnecessary. We always think if there used to be a store in a location, then we have to put another one in the same location. Why? The old store existed before the other numerous local, new shopping centers. Maybe the answer is to rezone it and build new, single family homes in that part of town.

Is it a ghetto? Are any of those locations listed considered ghettos?

And who are you to decide who can and can't build a shopping center? Are you another socialist who thinks Barry and the government have more wisdom than people who want to put their private money at risk? Are you advocating and official government agency that rations shopping centers and nationalizes them?

The point of a capitalist society is competition. If I feel I can build a better shopping center than the one down the street, there is nothing that stops me from doing so. It is my money and if I want to risk it, it's my business not yours.
