"Those signing the petition wrote comments against having a big-box store in the city and saying that a Walmart would attract undesireable people to Westerville "

Makes me very sad to hear that comment. By their logic anyone that shops at Walmart is undesireable.

Racism is alive and well in Westerville.

"Undesirables?" Hmmmm...my neighbors have told me they don't want a Walmart because they don't want those "Somalis and Mexicans" around here. My grandchildren are half Mexican. How bigoted are we in Westerville?

Carol Peterson sounds like one of those people that Walmart's competitors like Target and Giant Eagle are known to have hired in the past to try to block Walmart by lies and inuendo. Westerville needs more retail. Westerville needs an expanded tax base. Westerville needs to have that site improved or boarded up.

The issue of traffic can be handled by hiring someone in the traffic division who has the intelligence to set up timing of the lights on State Street and on Schrock Road to facilitate the traffic flow.

The 24 hour is really a non issue. They will have people there overnight stocking shelves and changing seasonal stocks. If the people are there why not have the doors open to handle the few sales that might come from those who cannot shop at other times. Krogers is open 24 hours and if you drive by at two O'clock in the morning, the lots are almost empty. There is no disruption to the surrounding area.

It's time to quit pandering to the naysayers and move into the enlightened age!

I expect to see more cop cars down that way now. Westerville always protects it's boarders. The North side beat is all about cracking down on DUI's, and the South side beat is all about intimidating criminals with their heavy presence. I'm starting to side with the proponents who say this won't draw riff raff and trouble makers from the south. Westerville PD won't allow it.

City law director Bruce Bailey emphasized that council's decision will depend on The Hadler Cos. ability to present a plan that fits within the city's zoning regulations.

NO NO NO NO NO NO

It should DEPEND on the PEOPLE of Westerville NOT on Hadler Company

Unbelievable that anyone would not want this center modernized. Upgraded.
The addition of Walmart will add much needed competition to the high priced Kroger and Giant Eagle... giving folks in Westerville another option for shopping. IT WILL NOT DESTROY UPTOWN... as some like Carol Peterson speak of . It will NOT destroy our community. It will provide many local jobs! I hope that City Council does take the project on the merits of improving the south side.

Mike Mike Mike ????

Zoning laws are not company specific. They should be applied evenly regardless of what the company is. That is the point. If Hadler passes the zoning test... and fits in with the Planning Commission of Westerville .... then it should be done. The Zoning Laws are there to protect the PEOPLE Mike. Re-Read the post.

Bill Bill Bill,

Understand but no new info on the traffic issues or 24 hours ops.

The road just in front of the building(shrock) in the last 3 years have been repatched, replaced, repatched again and needs to be fixed again. Last month a watermain broke at the corner of Shrock and OH-3, now add all the traffic cars/18 wheelers on theses roads. Man thoses orange barrells will never leave MY area.

Wait one on me understanding this statement

So if a strip Club or a swingers club wants to move in - ok then if they meet the zoning/Planning commission.

Then WHY does the city want resident inputs on the matter?

Mike from T...

You are truly blinded by your outright hatred for walmart and whatever else it is you hate. Did you not read the article and Resident Carol Peterson's quote? The word "undesirable" is a racist word when used in the context as Ms. Peterson did. Read it again without blinders on.

"Those signing the petition wrote comments against having a big-box store in the city and saying that a Walmart would attract undesireable people to Westerville "

True left and right wingers resort to name calling. Thank you for proving my point. I have considered both sides of the issue and have come to support re-development of a dilapidated shopping center.

There is specific codes prohibiting strip clubs in the city code. They were put in place several years ago when Sirens on Cleveland Avenue was remodeled or rebuilt. City leaders at that time thought they needed some codes to address these clubs. Sorry they didn't contact you about outlawing walmart.

Good point...and this won't be anymore than another grocery store. People don't seem to understand or just do not want to recognize that this smaller store will not be a super walmart. Folks are not going to travel great distances and pass other stores to come to Westerville's.

I used to teach in Delaware and the people of Delaware were also concerned with bringing in a store the size of Walmart....They waited 20 years before they finally got the shopping center that many people wanted. Traffic can be dealt with and the roads can be changed to accommodate the traffic--that is what happens in towns that have been around since the 1800's! I have had family from out of state come and visit and they always ask me when passing that dreadful shopping center "What happened with this place?" and I always say--"Lazaurs closed". Their comments are always the same, "Why doesn't somebody do something about it.?" This is our chance to "do" something about the "look" that I think most Westerville residence have gotten numb to. It takes an outsider to really say what they think and their words are not pretty. Let us enjoy a modern look and dress up an "eye sore" here in Westerville!

south end of town...I know I am looking forward to it!

Comment on the "undesirable" people statement:
I wonder if some of these people (who are speaking of undesirables) are looking at the Walmart pictures on the Internet! Heaven knows where those pictures were taken and in what large city's not so desirable area! Some of the pictures were even taken in other countries and I suspect that many have been photo shopped!

Do not let these ridiculous pictures make you think for a minute that this is what our new Walmart patrons would look like! Get real folks!

And, if you are a "racist" ---realize that people from different countries and backgrounds have always made up the framework of this wonderful country called The United States of America. We are a melting pot and always will be and we will always welcome people from other countries into our society and into our stores in the City of Westerville.

I am a centrist with three Mexican grandchildren. And yes my neighbors told me they don't want Somalis and Mexicans in the area. That's not racist?? And by the way these two winners are rabid uninformed republicans.

The undesirables comment just makes me sick. In fact, if that is the prevailing attitude (and I emphasize IF), then I am now hoping that we get the Walmart issue approved.

Take a look at our public schools in Westerville, and you will find the United Nations at work. We no longer have 90% white and 10% African Americans who were born in the United States.

I want my own children to grow up in a diverse setting where seeing different styles of clothing and different religions are accepted.

It saddens me to read the racist comments here. Take a tour of our K-12 schools and experience diversity for yourselves.

Carolee,

I was NOT commenting on YOUR statement, I was commenting on the term "undesirables" statement and somebody called the word undesirables as being racist.

My question was why was that word a racist word, I stated that undesirables come in all races.

If your neighbors have said this then it is racism.

What I don't understand is why you had to metion what race your grandchildern are. Please explain?
