Biggs and Richwine: The Underworked Public Employee
The cliché is true: Government workers do tend to take it easier than their private counterparts.

By ANDREW G. BIGGS
AND JASON RICHWINE

With state and local governments struggling to balance budgets in a still sluggish economy, government employment has fallen by 562,000 jobs since September 2008, a decline of 2.6%. In response, the Obama administration has called for more federal aid—on top of the $250 billion doled out in the 2009 Recovery Act—to help keep state and local government payrolls near prerecession levels.

But supporters of more federal aid implicitly assume that the size of the public sector was optimal before the recession. On the contrary, overstaffing is a serious problem in government, and the best evidence is a simple empirical fact: Government employees don't work as much as private employees. If public-sector employees just worked as many hours as their private counterparts, governments at all levels could save more than $100 billion in annual labor costs.

How do we know that? Are we just dredging up well-worn stereotypes of government employees enjoying shorter work days, prolonged sick leave and extended vacation breaks? In fact, new evidence from a comprehensive and objective data set confirms that the "underworked" government employee is more than a stereotype.

Absolutely, and anyone who has been paying attention through the years is aware of these facts.

If it's a tax, I'm against it.
All government is overpaid and underworked.
I'll take a refund, please.

You gotta do more, like write in to the papers (only the old people read it, but they are practically the only ones voting in school elections that aren't school employees)

You gotta convince people to stop giving the ed establishment more money.

Why don't you move to Afghanistan? Its a libertarian dream! There are not property taxes, no income taxes, or gun laws. There are no union thugs and welfare queens. There is more freedom there than people know what to do with.

Pack up your things and head straight to the United ticket counter tonight at CMH. There will be a one way ticket waiting for you to Kabul. No need to thank me. I just hate to see you suffer under the oppression of our government and want to do my part to help you achieve the freedom you so badly want.

Feck off ya feckin' gobsheen...and re-read for clarity.
I said the government is already overpaid and underworked.
Therefore, if it's a tax...I'm against it.
Spending cuts are in order.

And don't presume to lecture me about Kabul, gobsheen.
My loved one returned last May from military duty there.
I support freedom -- not slavery, particularly when it comes in the form of taxes.

I never knew that Karzi and Mullah Omar are Ayn Rand fans, could have fooled me.

Just because some of us think that government is inefficient with spending money does not mean we are anarchists.

Am I supposed to be impressed that you know someone that has been to Kabul? I am not. I know people that have been there too. They tell me that are happy to be back in the states - warts and all, including taxes.

Let me fill you in on a little secret. Taxes have been around for 5,000 years. That will not change. Sure things can be cut - military, social programs, education. Lets do it.

But to equate taxes and slavery is way out of line. You do not know what slavery is. Try spending 13 months in a "re-education camp" in southeast Asia in a room with 20 of your closest friends and being asked to dig tunnels and haul carts for 15 hours a day. That's slavery. Every April 15th for the last 41 years, I write checks with a smile on my face.

Nice word. Gobsheen. Was that the Glenn Beck word of the day? Couldn't jam the word caliphate into your rant?

Have you opened a dictionary? Slavery is involuntary servitude. When you decide to own property, earn income, or purchase something, there is a consequence - you pay tax. It requires you to actually do something.

Slavery happens when you have taken not action, but a result/outcome is forced upon you.

Wow. Let me guess. You went to Columbus Public Schools and did not study vocabulary in schools.

If the state claims a percentage of my income, it is claiming that it owns part of me, since work is indivisible from self.
If you really believe that the state owns us, make the argument for it.

Please find that for us in the Constitution as it pertains to health insurance.

It all about political choices.

In the pathetic remains of UnionCrat California the living is very good for the Publ Empl Unionistas.

In San Diego, A City Librarian just retired at 59 with a completely unfunded $289,000 yearly pension at the expense of the tax slaves and their pathetic children.

In Modesto, a medium sized city in Calif, the supt of schools just retired with a $303,000 per year totally unfunded Pension.

The biggest fraud perpetrated by the Elected Democrats on the pitiful citizen tax slaves is referred to as "Pension Spiking" with dramatically increases Publ Emp Pensions to the most expensive in American History.

Google: Pension Spiking before your even consider voting for a potential union funding hack who pretends to be a democrat at election time.

Be very afraid. Ignoring the Publ Empl Union warning label on Democrat politicians is the most destructive choice any loving parent could make in Ohio.

It's probably too late for Ohio families. Voters just settled for Obama and Sherrod Brown indicating that they had given up all hope for future prosperity for All non Union families.

Now that Ohio is a Blue State beware.
The Democrat on Democrat extortion perpetrated on Businesses and those working in the private sector (including Union members who work for private businesses) by elected Democrats can be devastating. The more Blue the State the more apt the elected Democrats are to sell every one and everything out in return for Public Employee Union campaign support.

Ohio has a Republican Governor, Lt. Governor, Auditor, Treasurer, Secretary of State and Attorney General. Six of Seven Supreme Court justices are Republicans. The House and Senate are also Republican as are 12 of 16 Congressional seats.

Ohio is anything but a blue state, they just didn't warm up to Romney fast enough. I think they would have in time, because Ohio loves RINO's, especially competent ones. Just not enough time and not the best campaign themes.

Where do you get that logic. Slaves to no actions. Someone took action on them. That is what the term involentary servitude means. Sorry for my words being to big for you.

Your voluntary act was working. The consequence of working is paying tax. When you stop paying your tax, that is a voluntary act of withholding an obligation. Actions have consequences. That action will lead you to jail.

The first ones took actions which ended in their capture. Those born onto slavery took the choice to remain slaves and not revolt or kill themselves. Using your logic everyone chooses taxation but somehow slaves didn't choose to stay slaves.. only the dead can take no action or choice.
