Old Chicago brings back memories. Grew up in the Romeoville area. I used to work there back then when I was in school

I went there once, can't remember how old I was... It was very sad, lonely, deserted. A few lame shops, and some rides that were lackluster... I remembered thinking (even at that young tender age) that it would soon be closed. Eas creepe

Pick up a copy of the movie "The Fury" with Kirk Douglas. A major scene was filmed in the amusement park area.

They had three major problems. First in order to save on real estate costs, they build the thing in what at the time was the very distant boonies. It seemed to take forever to get there. Second problem was that they ran out of money and the amusement park opened as essentially a big cement and steel box with a bunch of rides. Not a very pleasant atmosphere and after that first visit my parents did not want to return. Finally, the mall was build to accomodate specialty stores, not large anchors. There was really never any reason to go to the mall on a regular basis (although they did have the first food courts I had ever seen). Mall of America did the opposite of this, which is why they have been able to succeed.
But I remember what a sensation the Chicago Loop roller coaster was.
Also, in the late 70's the Jimmy Carter economy also helped kill this place in addition to the reasons you list.
It was geared towards kids and kids have no money to spend and who wants to go to the same carnival and ride the same rides weekend after weekend. It was doomed from the beginning, not a very long term concept. I think I went there two or three times and that was mopre than enough, got bored. I remember parents dropping off kids and leaving them there all day, cheap / free baby sitter and once again, with not much money so it wasn't like we were keeping the stores in business.

I saw Elvis there. I think it was around 1988. That place was rocking man! And I still had my sideburns, Jack.
I was rocking!
