Cancel their games for the rest of the year, and next year you will not hear a peep out of them. It's a shame that fights have to break out at events at school now. I went to a football game there recently to pick up my nephew, and all hell broke loose in the lot. It must have been about 30 police officers there. They wanted to know why I was in the lot sitting in my car. My response was to get my nephew out of here before he gets hurt because he goes to Oak Park. Parents, teach your kids manners when they are not with you.

What makes a school a "Rival" anyway?? I think using those terms only fuels the fire.

No, just drug busts, and teachers having sex with their students.

Nope, you don't hear about any fighting at the white schools you hear about students killing other students then turning the gun on themselves.

What the hell is happening to our City? No, you don't see this in predominently white schools. It's called parenting...

Oh this is a cop out. When I played ball every school was our enemy! We never fought before, during, or after the game because the game was so important to us that we did not want to miss one by being suspended, not to mention my dad would have busted my head open. These kids are bums and will end up dead or in jail...Actually the parent should be in the cell next to them!

You have a point, but they both share the same name, only difference East & West and most schools with the same name set up as this often are considered rivals by the students themselves. Sad case, but true....

This situation, I believe has nothing to do with the skin color of the individuals involved. No, maybe you don't see this at Naperville Central, but then again this is not the Columbine massacre. Cancelling the games at each of the schools would also punish those that were not involved. I think there is a deeper connection that must be noted. Proviso West, which is across the street from two large cemeteries, has a large security team and over 450 cameras installed to monitor the every move of those inside. Proviso East and West are also part of Proviso Township High Schools, which includes a relatively new (and expensive) Magnet Academy. Although there are huge rivalries between the schools, and I do NOT condone their behavior, I feel that a fight between students is not as socially irresponsible as the drug trafficking problem at York High School, or the over crowdedness in Elgin. I believe that the parents share the responsibility for the students, but if you were to take the time to understand the feeding neighborhoods to these schools, you might then understand why these kids are so angry...

That's a plan of action that should be considered. I know your were amazed that you were questioned in the manor in which you were.

MY KID IS NEW TO PROVISO WEST, AND I THINK IT'S A SHAME THAT IF HE WANTED HE COULDN'T GO TO A SCHOOL BASKETBALL GAME WITHOUT IT BEING A CHANCE THAT HE WILL GET HURT! SOMETHING NEEDS TO BE DONE! I ALREADY HAD TO GO TO THE SCHOOL BECAUSE MY SON WAS ATTACKED BY ANOTHER STUDENT RIGHT IN THE CLASSROOM! IT MAKES ME HATE I MOVED TO THE AREA!

Green Bay and Bears are Rivals. White Sox and Cubs are Rivals. When old people play Bingo against each other it is a Rival. Get over it. The use of proper words is the enemy here. It is the school.

Proviso is a hell hole. I went to East for one semester before going to a private school. There are guns every where. You don't even want to take piss because you are afraid you'll get jumped in the bathroom. These school need a major over haul. The teachers are afraid of the students and the students know it. Both east and west are a joke..

You know what makes this absolutely stupid. 95% of those kids have been knowing each other since Kindergarten. They probably played youth ball together, go to the same church and live less than a 1/4 a mile from each other. They just get to High School and feel they can no longer be friends with someone that does not go to their school.

Excellent ideas.

Thankfully, the teens did not "produce" weapons. The injuries would have been a lot worse had the fights involved anything but their fists.

I wonder why the teen who injured an officer was released to parents and not locked up overnight. A night behind bars might have done him so good.

Dan in Chicago - Honestly...you are an idiot and you probably don't come west of Halsted or South of Addison. This is not a black and white issue you jackass!! And to basically say that whoever got in these fights are a product of bad parenting. I'm a High School Basketball official and trust me, there are some predominatly white school that wish fighting were their only issues. Ask York, or Hinsdale S or Central as they are plagued with drug users and sex abusers!!

No I wasn't, and I'm a black man. Police were doing there job, because I was there for about an hour. Had I been an old gang banger, I could have been there to give kids guns. He did the right thing, and so did I, so there was no problem. Consider the pressure and split second decisions they have to make, there isn't enough money for me to take that job. I told them they should just go upside the kids head with the night stick. His reply, it's not that bad yet.
