Ten Mercer residents sentenced over prescription drugs

The charges were brought as part of U.S. Attorney Booth Goodwin's Bluefield Pill Initiative, which is a comprehensive plan aimed at eliminating the illegal distribution of prescription drugs in the southern region of the state.

Seems to me like they getting off easy. There should be a min of two years in prison for selling drugs. I don't mind paying taxes to keep a dealer in jail if it protects the good citizens and children of the area. We are paying to keep them up anyway might as well keep them behind bars while we at it.

besides the dealing, most of them are on welfare, food stamps, housing assistance, energy assistance, WIC and any other program they can mooch off the Government and at the same time they obviously do not pay taxes on their drug deals so they hit the American tax payer twice. I don't agree with any time sentence for these people. They should be dragged into to the center of town and hanged for all to see.

If the jail terms do not get longer for the drug crimes the issue is never going to be solved..When found guilty for selling drugs thesed people should be put away for a long time so it cannot happen again..It will also send a message to the others that if you are caught this will happen to you..Probation-house arrest and 1-2 years in prison is no way long enough for selling the dangerson drugs to our families and children..

I saw that..home confinement for a year? WTF? We're supposed to believe the feds take this seriously? Only possibility is that these folks are talking and leading to bigger distributors. And if that's the case, we'll see all the ignorant meth-heads on here yap endlessly about who the "snitch" is. This area is full of stupid drug abusers.

Drugs are bad. You're living proof. The world would be a better place if all you pillheads and dealers would GTFO. You are what is wrong with Bluefield.

The reason we don't know the sentence ranges is because we're not pill heads or drug dealers. Which one are you?

It's sickening what's happened here with these pathetic sentences. I can't even begin to imagine how much money has been spent to investigate, prosecute, try and jail these people.

I know for a fact that Ashley Hylton, the girl who got house arrest, admitted to selling about 10,000 pills. She never got her bond revoked, so never served a day of jail time.

Katie Slaughter was in jail when she was sentenced, so she must have done something to get her bond revoked. She was sentenced around the end of May and was out as of 2 weeks ago or so. In all, she probably served about 4-6 mos.

Nikita Whittaker served about 13 mos. She originally had indictments for 2 separate dates. Come sentencing, she was only charged on one. Her charges were aiding and abetting and distribution. Her hearing where she plead was sealed. That speaks loud and clear as to why her sentence was so light. Oh, and she had her bond revoked to....for possession with intent to distribute.

What do all of these people have in common? They all have children in the system and claimed they would lose their children if their sentence was too long. So, if you want to blame anyone for these paltry sentences, blame Judge Copenhaver, since he sentenced all three.

I know I'm just bringing up an old thread, that probably won't get commented on, seeing as though the last comment was at the beginning of July.

This is sad, in my small town, about a month ago, 3 people got arrested for having a shake and bake lab in a vehicle. These 3 got taken to jail, and were all bonded out within 4 days after this had happened. What I'm getting at, these same 3 people get arrested quite often, for the same drug and for some reason they never have any jail time, and apparently not even probation?! Also, a year or so ago, a lady got arrested for possession of meth, and had a very high bond, I think it was $30,000? A month or so after that, a few people caught two houses on fire while making meth.. and had bonds of around $10,000 a piece.

Grant County seems to be the only place that's on the ball. Everyone getting caught here lately, no doubt about it, does prison time - not jail.

What's the answer to this? The judge? The prosecutor? I know it's not law enforcement, they do their job.

THey snitch Kleenex idiot...We do not have money to lock everyone up...the pharmaceutical companies have Congress on the payroll....let's de-criminalize the opiates and weed...keep meth and acid illegal...tax regulate...make the welfare people and criminals work to get their fix...monitored regularly...get their fix in a clinical setting...I am glad America is going through a change in demographics...all the old religious white folk are dying out...God wouldn't of put drugs here in the first place if he didn't want us to enjoy them. We are like television for God. How boring would it be if we were all prudes?

Snitching would make sense if one got caught with a drug, and then told where they got it..

So who do they snitch on when they are the main supplier, and they get busted in their vehicle, making a new batch, for themselves?

I don't think you understood what I was saying, and there's no need in calling me an idiot, just because you didn't thoroughly read what I typed.

Here, let me break it down:
-A person gets caught with meth, and is charged with possession; bond is $30,000, or more.

-Months later, a trio gets pulled over, in city limits, and they are making a new batch of shake and bake; so basically, it's a lab on wheels, with all the ingredients and they were shaking the bottle as they were getting pulled over; bond is $10,000 for each of them.

-Another few months pass, another person commits arson in 2 different houses, at the same time,(their lab got out of control); bond is less than $15,000.

Can you explain that without calling me an idiot?

No need to explain yourself.. you owe nobody any kind of explanation. People get on here, and sometimes those people call you their friends.. trust me, I know. They get off at adding crap on to things that don't need it. Plus, people have to point a finger and blame someone..

I'm still waiting on someone to answer my question.

BTW - Way to go for getting yourself together, and keep it up!

Sometimes they base the bond on the amount they think you can pay. For instance a football player who is accused of murder would have a million dollar bond. While the average bond would be 100k.
