HEADLINE - Peoples Defender: 2011 fair, future to be talk of Senior Fair Board meeting
… Fenton, who has been a Senior Fair board member for about 20 years, said the Adams County Fair attendance used to coincide with whatever the population of the county was. At one time attendance was pushing 30,000...
...The final numbers are not yet in on season ticket purchases, but the general gate attendance fell below 10,000 this year…
...The Adams County Fair has had four bad years in a row…

I'll agree to the the fair having several bad years in a row. as a paitron for many years now, I view the Adams Co Fair to be headding down hill fast. exspecially in the entertainment dep. i mean, isnt the whole reason most people pay out at least half their paycheck, is to atleast be entertained by the end of the night, wanting to go back. I mean, as paying customers were stuck with uncomfortable rusty rides i'd be afraid to put a kid on. and boring sandbagging derbys. shoot, i wouldnt mind if theyd make a few small changes to help bring back some of that 'desire to return' year after year. if the fair had those things, Plus, have more events focused on running fun contests, and on gigging out local artists at events. If they did, people would want to come, and would want to bring other people. and in result, there would be bigger turn outs. if the board would be willing to pay out desirable Gig, OR Prizes amount:(Last Yr Talent Prize: A Bond. you gotta spend money, to make money. Also, A possible good idea would be, to have auditions two weeks before the fair, for local talent special event night, OR pre-contests. and have seperate events for each category so people can choose what interests them. record and advertise the pre-results on youtube and in the paper, a week before, so people will anticipate showing up for each of the event's final out-come on there scheduled time & date. do it like a miniture americas got talent leading upto the main event. get everyone involed so they want to participate.
Well, Any Who..... The Fair Needs to be more local, more interactive, more local talent supported. Fun Events for art, music, athletics, derbies, animals, cooking, tangible art, & more. The Rides & Derby are a good money maker, but not good enough obviously. sorry for the mispelled babble, Im Hopeing You Get with it this year Fair Board!

and What does cant afford entertainment mean? there are all kinds of local artists that would love to compete in say, talent contests and such (and would give an participation fee to enter) to win a worthy Prize. not to mention revenue for charging 50c OR a dollar admission for viewers. SO...... at that point, their working with money they never had. not to mention the families that'll turn-out and will pay general gate admission fees aswell to view the show. what gives? i'll tell ya what gives, our happiness and pockets while were putting up with their ignorant decisions, and there turn-out rates deminishing each year till it goes broke.

They r broke! The fair board is in collections with first state bank now, because of our last president paid over 12,000.00 just For parking cars during the fair, when brown county only paid 3,000.00 for parking! Now he has had a brainstorm and trying to spend the kids money at in the building fund too buy the land behind the hog barn,

In my opinion that sounds like B.S! its not room they need, they hardly have any one show up at all any more any how! and i agree there are local bands or singers that would volunteer to sing a song or two for free. and people who will pay to be in, or watch good shows. I know Kids modivate where the funds go, but if you dont keep the parents that bring that money happy, they wont ever get out of debt!

I think the biggest mistake was moving the midway. The focus used to be the center ring with the rides along side which complemented the whole atmosphere and made it bright, loud, and exciting. As an adolecent I remember the fair being exciting, moving, with a little something for everybody. From rock and roll to bluegrass, country, with local bands, tractor pulls, greased pig contests, horses, pony races, vendors, politicians, equipment sales, antiques, arts and crafts, greasy food etc. It had been years since I'd gone but the last time was kinda scary after dark for lack of lighting. The atmosphere seemed to be somber and foreboding. I came away depressed and wondering what the heck happened to the Adams County Fair. That was 3 yrs ago and I haven't been back.

I wish they could have something like a Paul Bunyon contest where the local tree cutters would show their expertise in using a saw.

The 4h isn't for the kids anymore, you have parents paying THOUSANDS for (the best) animal and the kids not doing any of the work until it hits the fair grounds. I know of a couple of families that are guilty of that, one of the feeders of his grandsons animals paid a chicken judge to get one younger grandson to win the chicken show and he didnt show the chickens that were registered to show. How is that teaching the kids to maintain the animals? If you are on the small animal board you shouldnt have any kids or grand children showing animals. conflict of intrest when you have access to the judge to pay him off. The Adams County Fair is corrupt and needs to go away.
