Minimum wage rises 70 cents

Full story: El Paso Times

Thousands of El Pasoans got a 70-cent-an-hour pay raise Thursday, and many restaurant operators are trying to hold the line on menu prices as their labor costs rise along with food prices.

It's obvious that the increase in the minimum wage is having a negative impact on the economy by causing prices to increase and people to lose their jobs.

Just because wages went up don't help. Everything else has went up ex: lettuce was .99 a head now 1.29. coffee was 6.89 now 8.84. even kids favorites of chips was 2.50 now 3.00. You don't make anything just pay out more. Why bother.

What you don't realize is that prices are going to go up again because the prices that went up before the minimum wage hike were from oil rising. Now it is just another excuse to continue to RIP-US-OFF ripofflicans...

If the Dems will let us open a new refinery or drill oil here or in the Gulf the gas will be cheaper. Bottomline go back to El Paso High and finish school. Oh, never mind better get back to the front of Home Depot, I new new carpet and my grass cut. By the way I own a major food chain local only in this area. Just wait until I raise those prices.

Get a life, why are you reading El Paso Times. Go back to Home Depot and wait for someone to give you a job for today. By the way, I stated, I own a major food joint in El Paso.

Just means that a shopper has to be more savy. Be lazy and pay more or actually look at the weekly flyers from Lowes(big 8), Albertsons, Sun Harvet, etc... and you can get deals like 2 heads of lettuce for $1 . It's not about what cards you get, but how you play your cards. Also, chips for kids? Give them some real food!!

Lay off the lettuce, chips and coffee. Make your own food instead of prefab.
No fast food. Get those kids who are out of school to help do cooking and cleaning chores. Check out Suze Orman???

I really feel sorry for you Americans, no I really do.

The Aussie Dollar is almost on par with the US Dollar and our minimum wage say for retail is $57,000 a year.

It's also unlikely that you have much of an illegal immigration problem driving wages down.

An increase in wages doesn't have to mean a direct increase in goods provided. The reason for running a business is to generate profit, but there comes a point when those helping the owner to make the profit could benefit more by getting paid more. However, that just means less profit for the owners, and they aren't willing to cut into their profits. Other countries have higher minimum wages, just look at Australia...they are making around 16.00 an hour compared to our 7.25! Working an 8-hour shift here and you get to buy around 14 gallons of gas while working an 8-hour shift in Australia one could purchase around 20-21 gallons of gas at their prices per gallon. It's just crap that anyone would try to justify not raising minimum wage. It is just another form of modern day slavery. Especially in El Paso where there is a high number of uneducated people, not to mention Mexico is right there so it is exploited because of that...that is the TRUTH!

I'm damn glad you posted this. My grandson has been working at Kentucky Fried for several years and he never told me about this raise in minimum wage. He's only been giving me the same amount for room and board as he always has, which means he's holding some back on me. I was suspicious when he came up loaded last week because I only allot him enough money for 2 tall boys a night, but he clearly had been drinking for several hours. When he gets home this evening, I will demand to see his pay stub so that I can see how much more he's making now that Congress has acted.

You probably don't have a do nothing congress or the vile tea baggers standing in the way of progress and you probably have a national health care system. But who the hell would want to live in that god forsaken land with those igger tribes running around. You can keep your hell hole.

Do you realize that everything cost 3 to 5 times more in Australia? 50% of your salary is taxed off the top $57k is really $23.5k. At 3 to 5 times the cost to live there, that is dirt poor. 1 gal of milk $9, 1 gal of gas $7, a 3 liter coke $5.50, a pack of cigarettes $20. Higher minimum wages, will not increase your buying power. The cost to the employer, for the higher wages. Will get passed down to the consumer, no gain. The losers are the people that make more than minimum wage.
