I am on staff at John Shero and have had no official news of the change over, but I heard today that the new name with TDCJ will be San Saba Transfer Unit. I was searching for some news about it and ran across this site. Will check back again.

I am also a staff at John Shero. It is a sad situation for staff because the Adminstration already knows that it's going to transfer to TDCJ. Of course, they don't want to say anything until Admn. gets a confirm date that we're closing. TDCJ already named the facility in San Saba by calling it---"San Saba Transfer Facility." There are a lot of staff upset with Mr. Davis-Superintendent due to the fact that he informed the TYC Staff about 4 months ago that once he heard something in reference to John Shero coverting over to TDCJ that he would let the Employees know. That was a lie because we as staff already know that Amn. don't want to lose staff as of right now due to the agency needing the staff to supervise the youth. We already have several staff looking for other jobs and staff quiting left and right without any notice so therefore that leaves the dedicated staff to work several 12 hour shift a week. I don't blame the staff for quiting without notice because the Adm. are not and won't give us any notice of what is going on. To be honest, Davis and Hollis don't care if JCO's have to work so much overtime as long as The ODS makes the coverage. Well, I don't see Davis and Hollis making the Caseworkers work a dorm so that will give the JCO's a break from working so many 12 hour shift. Can we actually say that Davis and Hollis have given us a helping hand on the dorm? It would be nice if they were to give us a break when facility is short on staff. If Davis and Hollis don't care then why should the staff. The moral has gone down so much that the staff don't look foward going to work. It's a job that paids good in Sab Saba so that is the only reason why we continue to work at John Shero. Otherwise, we wouldn't put up with the crap.

I would like to re-tract a comment I made here. The name San Saba Transfer Unit is not correct. I should not have posted that until I had my facts straight.

I just read JCO comments and I will not disagree with all of it, but I have been surprised at how good moral is among the staff. Not knowing the future is always hard. Things are so much better now that there are so many less youth per dorm. Makes a world of difference.

If anyone here is a newbie like me, I would like to say: It seems if you do not register with this site, then Los Angeles will be listed as your town. I do not plan to register, but I hope to read more comments. Thanks!

I heard that when TDCJ first opened up in San Saba that the Unit went by San Saba Transfer Facility so maybe TDCJ hasn't named the Facility yet or maybe they might go back to what it was called in the past. Either way, we know it's a done deal that John Shero Juvenile Correctional Facility will be closing its doors soon. There are too may things going on at work to confirm that it will take place. The physical year starts in September so I assume that it will happen before that date. I work on PM shift, and having less students on the dorm sure does make it easier on staff. I have to say that the moral is down because No One in the front are letting us know anything so therefore we are left to wonder what the future holds for us at TYC. It would be nice if Mike Davis would schedule a meeting with the Staff to answer our questions that we might have in reference to TYC closing its doors in San Saba. If anyone out there has any information, it would be greatly appreciated.

I don't know if I can handle all these 12 hour days. With a 3 hour round-trip drive that makes a 15 hour day.

I work at the John Shero State School, and I am looking forward to the facility becoming an Adult Prison. Us as JCO's will have the oppurtunity to work for TDCJ as an adult correctional officer in San Saba, Texas. Several JCO's are ready to work for TDCJ. Too many staff have been injured working for TYC compare to TDCJ. We are ready for a change!!!
If you're not working for TDCJ when it opens you won't be hired. TYC people are bad news now and TDCJ doesn't want them

I already called HR in Huntsville, and she informed me that the JCO's at John Shero State School will have first choice to work for TDCJ in San Saba then the empty slots will go to the CO's that want to transfer to San Saba from other TDCJ facilities. I already taken my pre-test, and offered a position in Gatesville. It amazes me how TDCJ does not want to hire TYC employees when I actually was offered a position. TYC & TDCJ has had their share of bad apples, but majority of the employess have good work ethics. TDCJ can't look down on the TYC employees when TDCJ employees have gone through the same scandal. With time, we'll see what the end result will be. JCO's don't get discourage so hang in there until the end. The job description for a CO is not that much different from a JCO so it's not like we can't do the job as a CO.

huntsville, do you really think there will be enough new people move to San Saba to fill the jobs? Most of the staff at TYC drive in from the Killeen area. The pay scale is the same, so where will the staff come from? Why do you state that "TYC people are bad news"?

It's people like Huntsville that want to rain on our parade. Maybe Huntsville feels threatened that JCO's will get hired before the CO's that want to transfer or maybe Hunstville doesn't think it's fair that JCO's will get the slots before the CO's. TYC staff can't let people like that discourage us.

I have spoke with Davis,Hollis, and HR and all say they do not know what or when TDCJ will take over. I dont see any reason for them to lie since they will be looking for jobs just like the rest of us. I have worked my share of 12 hour shifts but since moving to case work know that if the youth are to be processed out we cant work shifts, hold group, and do paperwork. That seems to be the problem with all these new JCO staff they do not understand what actually place at a facility, but do know how to complain.

After giving out incorrect info once already, I hesitate to add more "news". I think this is official. They will be sending all youth 19 and older out of TYC, either home or TDCJ. Goodbye to my best "checkers & confronters".... PS: Huntsville, I would still like to hear back from you. I agree with message #34: I don't think the Administration knows any more than we do at this time.

do you think they will tell you if they don't want to hire you and face a lawsuit. NOOOOOO, but when it comes down to actually hiring we will see. TDCJ does what is best for them and if you were them would you hire controversial (sorry if spelled wrong no dictionary near) employees that could bite you in the future if you end up in court. i don't think you would. i know alot of really great folks that work for TYC but when the poop hits the fan it usually gets on the innocent as well as the guilty. don't get down but i'd sure hire on now if i was you. Huntsville is probably more right than most want to say. sad but true it's the way of the state nowdays with all the lawsuits. course that's just my opinion and i've only retired from TDCJ. they don't care for their employees and look out for themselves and with TYC getting all the bad press alot of the JCO's will be splattered by the fan.

they will hire anyone at tyc in san saba. billy gonzales works there and he's gotta have an extensive record and was one of the biggest meth dealers in town for 10 years. i guess his dope friend debra hartniff got him the job. and also his gf amber everette. she was just in trouble with a meth bust and they had a warrant out for her arrest. i guess she narked to get out of it like the rest of all these great people around here. how do people like this still have a job. they really are desperate.

To all my friends at the JOHN SHERO STATE SCHOOL: You are all grandfathered in to work with TDCJ if you still want the job. I agree with the comment #31. TDCJ has had their bad breaks in similar things that TYC is going through. I should know I had worked for TDCJ. It just takes someone with a good head on their shoulders to know what they are doing to get the job done right. I know it has been hard for your facililty and ours. But the ones that stays longer are the ones that are the strongest of them all. These people as myself won't take any shit from anyone especially from students and now it is getting to the point where we won't take any shit from the ADMINISTRATION. Don't be afraid to take a stand on something that you believe in. There are those that are willing to stand behind you 100% but you have to do your part in order for us to help you. There will be time that you want to give up and that is exactly what they(ADMIN.) are wanting you to do but I say don't. And for the comment for #37, WE ALL MAKE MISTAKES, IT JUST TAKES A BIGGER PERSON TO ACKNOWLEDGE THEM. I know alot of us have made mistakes in the past and have corrected them and to some they need a little more help. You never know when one you love so much may end up where you would never have thought them to be. I am not one to judge because I am not perfect. I will never look down instead I will look at everyone whoever I come across whether it be a friend, foe, neighbor or any stranger straight in their eyes. I have many friends who have chosen the wrong path but never will I judge them for their mistakes. Like I had said before when I had started working with TDCJ and with TYC we come from different walks of life, you will never come across any person who has not done something in their past that they have regretted. AREN'T WE ALL SINNERS? It's what we all have been through that makes us unique and I am not just talking about DRUGS; it's everything that no one else knows what has gotten us to that stage in life. It takes a bigger person to turn themselves around and make the very best with what they have or what was given to them to start fresh. My advise to all those that want to know: Never wish ill on anyone unless you want it to return back to you tenfold. You never know when it may be you or next of kin.
