I work at the John Shero State School, and I am looking forward to the facility becoming an Adult Prison. Us as JCO's will have the oppurtunity to work for TDCJ as an adult correctional officer in San Saba, Texas. Several JCO's are ready to work for TDCJ. Too many staff have been injured working for TYC compare to TDCJ. We are ready for a change!!!

SOINSO, who is the person that you know that works at John Shero? We work a lot of 12 hour shifts. We also worry if we get put under investigation due to the fact that more than one youth will lie on one staff in order to get a staff moved off the dorm or terminated. Students have more rights then staff. That's the reason why we as staff (JCO'S) are looking foward to John Shero converting over to TDCJ.

I was honestly just curious what it was like there. He's getting out soon anyway. For your sake and theirs I wish there were more of you to watch them. From what I keep reading and hearing, there aren't enough officers, so the ratio of officers to inmates is not good. I'm not trying to get you in trouble. I just wanted to know your perspective on things.

I appreciate the fact that you all are trying to do this job. I admire you if anything. It's nice to talk with someone that works there. We haven't heard from the inmate in a while, but we love him. And we want to help him turn his life around.

You are so very welcome. It's a hard job, and it's not for everyone to be a Juvenile Correctional Officer. Have faith that the youth:P will change his life around to be a productive citizen in society. Now, I've been a JCO for a while. I'm ready for a change so hopefully the John Shero State School will become a TDCJ Unit. The Unit will be a Drug Rehab so we shouldn't have too many problems witht the adult inmates due to the fact that if an inmate acts out in a negative way than he will sent back to a regular prison/statejail. The inmate will lose the chance of going home early on parole if he doesn't complete the program at the rehab. Have a nice day!

Do you work with the males or females or both?

As far as him turning his life around, I'm going to keep praying and praying and then pray some more :) I know he needs a lot of love and understanding. I'm ready for him to come out here.

The sad thing about TYC staff at John Shero actually think they will get jobs with TDCJ. I work for TDCJ as a guard and I will be transferring in like the rest of the TDCJ guards that want to move back to Central Texas, I don't know who told you that TDCJ would allow you to stay in San Saba but they were lying. By the time you get out of the academy the place will be fully staffed, they may offer you a job in Abilene or Gateville but tenure with TDCJ will get the 1st shot not residency.

We already had a meeting with 3 people from Austin that do the transition from TYC to TDCJ. We were told that we would have first choice to work with the TDCJ in San Saba once it coverts over or they would help us, JCO's get another job at another TYC Facility. We're going by with what was told to us in that meeting. Don't get me wrong, I have wonder about TDCJ guards having first choice over us. We were also told that we had to hang in there until the end so we could qualify to work there as a CO. We were also told that we had to take a written test, which is so easy, and that we would do training for 6 weeks at John Shero. Of course, we have to pass the written test to qualify. Maybe you're right. I only know what was told to us in that meeting. We would do the training when John Shero goes through reconstruction for the Adult Inmates so we can be ready to work. TYC and TDCJ came to an agreement to where JCO would become CO's at John Shero since in the past, TYC has work with TDCJ by hiring the CO's first as JCO's when TDCJ coverted over to TYC. Some JCO's already worked at a prison/state jail so it's not like we don't know how things operate with TDCJ. It is easier to work with the adults compare to the juveniles, but some of us chose to leave the prison to be closer to home. If you have a phone number that I can call to check into this matter, I would appreciate it very much. That is the only reason why a lot of staff are still working at John Shero because of the information that was given to us in that meeting.

I also heard that about the people already there as JCOs will have first shot. Didn't this happen when it was TDCJ first and converted to TYC that those that wanted to stay would have first choice. In a matter of fact, I had worked with several of the ex TDCJ/JCO when I had worked at the San Saba State School. As of today, they still have the same ones that happened to be the first ones to open up the facility as a TDCJ. Whatever happens, I wish everyone the very best of luck and for the first timers; don't panic it's not all that hard compared with the youths. Anyway when TYC is trying to go back to being TDCJ; TDCJ Aministrators are having to send out a crew to redo the facility due to it being a place for youths. So it may be a while before anyone, JAY, gets to come down before those that are wanting to stay and become COs. So by the time it is finished then those that are wishing to stay will have a spot in the TDCJ in San Saba, Tx.

Chan,
We have our share of problems at John Shero as well. They are thinking about closing another Dorm due to the fact the facility will close more likely by Sept. 1st. We should have 8 dorms running, but we only have 6 dorms open for business.:)
Now, they are saying that if we don't get hired by TDCJ in San Saba that they will help us get a job at the State Jail in Brownwood or else where. That sucks!!! So what's up with the deal? We're hearing so many rumors & the Admin. is not saying anything due the fact that they don't want the JCO's to quit right now. Time will tell what will happen. I wish you and the JCO's good luck over there at Ron Jackson. I see that ya'll are having it real bad over there. May God help all the JCO's get through the trials and tribulations. I seriously doubt if many JCO's will transfer to Brownwood. If they do, they won't stay too long. Take care.

To Angel74, At this time I do not think that I would trust anything that is comming out of the Austin Administrations office. My favorite line from a movie is "you know that black spot on top of chicken sh-t, that chicken sh-t to". You know what to believe deep down ,so go with that feeling.

Be prepared for Ron Jackson to start sinking in the hole like John Shero. It saddens all of us that they themselves can not even fix problem. They had strayed away the real cause in taking care of the sexual predators to firing all staff with a Misdemeanor of Class A or B. Fine by me if they want the youths to run it themselves, it really saves me the f-----g headache. The people out of Austin is treating us like SHIT as if we are the criminals. No one should be treated like this. You know that Professionalism has gone out the door.
