Educators assess Common Corea s local impact
#1 Jul 23, 2010
Massachusetts will have to lower its standards to meet the other states and we will lose state/local control. Why do it then? Oh yeah, to get $ from the feds. That, and there is loads of money to be made by textbook and test making companies. We will pay more and get less.

You cant even make this stuff up! The ELA strands of this Core Curriculum that assess "college and career readiness" are 8th grade strands in the MA Curriculum Frameworks! Nor will MA educators be teaching fiction, literary prose and poetry, instead it will be all nonfiction-based!!! Anyone who teaches grades 4-8 or has children who are 9-14...they LOVE to read fiction at those ages!!! How foolish MA is for adopting these dumbed-down standards!!!
The writing strands are fairly similar to MA Curriculum Frameworks but there is no mention whatsoever of peer-generated criteria for assessing writing. Why bother adopting this other than for federal money? What a shame that MA has adopted this!!!

It is so easy to miss what is really at stake here - federal monies. The adoption of this criteria - regardless of its substantive content - is all about dollars. This criteria - as part of ObamaRama's "Race To The Top" grant competition - awarded extra points to states that adopted the standards. Because of that cash incentive, all states - except Alaska and Texas - have adopted the standards.
Follow the money. This isn't about a educational "Common Core" - it's about a political "Cash Cow."

So what happens to MCAS now? All the energy and angst that MCAS created will amount to....what?

It will amount to the same thing it always amounted to - absolutley nothing.

I assume instead of a statewide high stakes test, there will be a dumbed-down national hih stakes test to correspond with these dumbed-down standards. One also has to wonder, what of the MTEL exams that teachers must take in order to receive a license to teach in MA? They supposedly base themselves on the MA Curriculum Frameworks and are among the toughest licensure exams in the country!!! Will MA be dumbing down their teacher licensure exams as well, all in the name of receiving federal money and sucking up to Obama?
