Vote goes against charter school

Full story: Berkshire Eagle

Following the tweaking of some of the language, the Selectmen Monday night unanimously approved a resolution opposing the establishment of a charter school in their school district.

Time for Stanton to step down .. He's frequently absent from meetings.
Voters should remember that at the next election ..

Good to see the hacks in GB are watching out for each others' backs and are comfortable in perpetuating systems that don't work. Typical of the People's Republic of Massachusetts.

Great job voting the charter school down. It has done a number on the money for the regular public schools in our town(Adams). Stick with what you have now, you are better off.

The education system works just fine. The schools are top notch with fine teachers and counselors. There are excellent programs in arts, college prep, and sports, and each student has a choice of which publicly-financed school to attend. If anything needs fixing, it's many of the parents, who are either full of a sense of entitlement, or drunk and stoned.

You want exclusive educational facilities, send your kids to a private school on your own dime and don't expect taxpayers to pay for it.

While our schools have some great programs they do not meet the needs of all children. The above comment only further clarifys how misinformed people are about charter schools. Charter schools are not exclusive, and many in our community do not have the means to afford private school price tags. These parents and children still deserve a good education. Stooping to name calling a group that has worked coutless hours to bring an educational alternative to the county, merely brings the debate to its lowest possible level....

OK, so what happens if more parents want their children to go to a charter school than there are places available? Who decides? Got an answer for me that everyone will be 100% OK with?

Looks like Stanton has let the people of GB down again.

As selectman it is your job to know the issues and be prepared to vote when the time comes. Stanton is either too preoccupied or disinterested in the matters at hand to represent the people as their elected official.

In response to: "OK, so what happens if more parents want their children to go to a charter school than there are places available? Who decides? Got an answer for me that everyone will be 100% OK with?"

In the case of too many applicants, there is an impartial lottery to select random names of students. This particular school intended to do extensive outreach with underserved students and their families to ensure that they were aware of the option. I wish the people who are defending the status quo would at least go to the trouble to get their facts straight.

The BART Charter school is one of, if not the, highest performing elementary/middle school in Berkshire County, and they have a disproportionate number of special education students. We should all be open-minded enough to learn from success.

Thanks for your response, but do you really think Ira Kaplan and the other parents behind this charter school would accept the results of an "impartial" lottery if their kids don't make the cut? Look at my name above - it says it all.

Fact Finder-I don't know where you get your results, but BART is way behind on their MCAS results to Lenox, Richmond, Williamstown, Mt. Greylock etc.
Please see the Boston Globe rankings:
http://www.boston.com/news/special/education/...

And note that they are really in the bottom tier for most subject areas.

If Great Barrington's inept Selectmen are against establishment of a charter school in South County, then it must not only be a good idea, but a GREAT idea!
Can anyone name even one decision on a matter of great import where these backward-looking Selectmen were ever right?

Given your point of view, Barack Obama must be the greatest leader in the history of the United States, and Man-Made Global Warming is toasting the planet with the ocean poised to rise up and engulf New York City.

I am happy not to have the taxpayers pay for it ... I think that's fair, since I, as a taxpayer, must pay for over-rated public schools. Yeah, that's fair, right?

In Great Barrington we would be better off if none of the selectmen showed up for meetings.

Very happy with the way the Town Selectmen voted. I see Atwood likes the Charter school idea though. You just lost my vote next election.

I don't think it's the curriculum or the teachers the parents are seeking to avoid, but the drug and alcohol permissiveness enabled by the parents. Although you can't avoid it altogether, a charter or private school might mitigate that for some families. What do we do about the drug/drinking problem in South County? Find the answer to that and you'll solve a lot of the problem this charter thing was trying to address.

Well, I do like the President, but I like our public school system more and want to see it thrive. Taking dollars away from it for an exclusive charter school with redundant programs is a bad idea. By the way, I don't believe you live anywhere near Berkshire County. Perhaps you could mind your own business and let us mind ours.

I am not sure I could do that in a way that would be satisfactory to you. I imagine you would probably demand my name and address, and if I gave it, I could be subject to potential harrassment. Apparently you have a disturbing history of such behavior. In any event, trust me when I say I live in Great Barrington where it is cold and sunny this morning.
