I am writing from New Delhi, India.
Summer here in Northern India is very hot, and dry till the monsoon rains start. "Desert coolers" are in extensive use, not only in residences but in large buildings like offices empoying hundreds of staff, including government offices, and even in research laboratories and hospitals. In the "desert coolers" (DCs), a stream of air is blown or drawn through cascades of water flowing over straw mats, and the air that gets cooled due to evaporation of the water is circulated in the living spaces. In my opinion, DCs offer an ideal environment for the growth of not only Legionella, but all kinds of other pathogens. The cooled air is usually full of fine water droplets. In a small way, I have campaigned for awareness of the dangers. However, there has been no diminution in their use, particularly because there is no cheap alternative available. Even scientists do not understand the problems, apart from the fact that the DCs do not work very well once the rains start, and the humid air produced can play havoc with electronic instruments.
In government offices, the DCs are rarely , if ever, cleaned during a whole summer.
Some years ago, I had to go the emergency ward of a hospital for checking whether I had a fracture. I was shocked to find that the emergency ward, cooled with DCs, was full of farmers with open wounds sustained especially with a badly designed threshing machine.
I am furious and despondent at the same time.
