INSTEAD OF ALWAYS BAD MOUTHING OUR VOLUNTEER DEPARTMENTS, WHY DON'T YOU SEND A REPORTER OUT TO SPEND A WEEK WITH A DEPARTMENT SO THE PUBLIC CAN SEE THE OTHER SIDE. HOW MANY MEALS, FAMILY FUNCTIONS ARE DISRUPTED. SHAME ON YOU NEWSDAY

here we go again with the fd bashing. When is Newsday going to do that story on all the drug and alcohol abuse going on with their employees in the pressroom??? How long will it take the censors at Newsday to remove this comment???

Here's a simple solution to stopping the misappropriation of public funds - identify these thieves and prosecute them to the fullest extent of the law.

These voli fire depts are no more than hangouts for these guys.

Yeah they perform an important service, but they still take way too much advantage of thier perks. Some perks are ok but these bozos don't know where to draw the line!

What is wrong with these people? Don't they pay taxes too? Don't they understand how wrong it is to rip taxpayers off like this?

Mr. Dinapoli showed up year after year for initiation ceremonies for alot of Fire Dept.s praising the volunteer work they did and even praising their families for their sacrifices as well.
Maybe he should pay back all the "free" dinners he collected over those many years and we can save the taxpayers some more money.
This seems like a politician trying to make a name for themself in a new office in Albany.
It's so transparent.....

erode trust? what trust? most of these fire departments are nothing but taxpayer financed private clubs. trips, racing trucks, full bars, kitchens, porn, large screen TV's and lounges all under the guise of helping recruit new volunteers.
to add insult to injury most of their budgets and elections are held off calendar seperate from the November general elections.
we should consolidate districts and get paid professionals instead
no surprise

Well, what did you expect? L.I.'s fire service is a frat club, boys' club, whatever you want to call it. In addition to the adult channels, there are plenty of adult magazines. No doubt subscriptions are also funded by the taxpayers. I have also heard of stippers coming to parties at firehouses. Hmmm... I wonder who pays for those. Because of the volunteer nature, the oversight and accountability is weak or lacking (financial and otherwise) and it is not run as professionally as paid city (NYC) fire dept. Don't get me wrong, I value the dedication and efforts of the volunteers that do take their public service seriously, as well as the other community oriented activities of many fire departments. Unfortunately, there are plenty of persons who join for less than public-service reasons. I would love to see the Island go to a network of paid fire fighters.

"For example, the West Islip Fire District spent $615 of taxpayer funds on a subscription to the Playboy channel at the firehouse and movie channels that included adult entertainment, the audit found."

Let's get this right, if a movie channel shows any adult programming (ex. HBO, Showtime, The Movie Channel or Cinemax) it can't be in the firehouse? Talk about communist rule and censorship. WIFD spent $615 in a year, 51.25 a month. If they have say 75 members that's .68 cents a month per member. Considering all the hours they VOLUNTEER per year, it sounds like a pretty cheap trade off to let sit and watch something other that Sponge Bob Squarepants.

And how many er, jerk sessions are disrupted by fire calls as well? Maybe if these guys are home with their families they would not feel the "urge" to subscribe to the Playboy Channel in their firehouse, which are seeming more and more like Frat Houses these days.
