Well written article, Mr. Brand. It seems as though officials in Suffolk County are aware of the problem and will address it soon. Hopefully the awareness raised from this article will help spur interest all around.

Nassau, meanwhile, has raised rents to market rate on its 35 historic houses, increasing income from $24,000 last year to more than $80,000 this year, said Sean Rainey, deputy real estate director.

How do you have 35 houses and only make $80,000 a year?

Where are you advertising the places for rent? Even on Craigslist you could get more then that.

What a bunch of fools. How much would you pay a security guard to sit in a booth 24/7 and watch the Park and Historic House's. Low Rent on these houses provided both Security and preservation. To prevent government officials from abusing the renting process, have a public lottery exculding politicians. I'm sure they will find a sleazy way to abuse this as well though.

In Florida the county parks allow people who work for the county to live in those building These people maintain the park, open and lock the gates, as well as 24/7 supervision of the park. but instead of a full salary most utilities are paid by the county.
