Regardless of how one may feel about Congress' original, 1970's decision to force the Academy to revamp its Spartan programs to accomodate the gentler sex, the fact is that there is already a generation of female graduates who have given faithful and effective service to their country and even those who have retired after a full, 20-year career! There also have been two female graduates of West Point who have given their lives as a result of enemy action in Iraq. It's sometimes sad to see an old tradition fall by the wayside, but every old West Point tradition was new at one time. The Superintendent is correct. Words and symbols are important. This is the right thing to do to acknowledge and recognize our honored female members of the Long Gray Line. These changed lyrics constitute a new tradition whose time is overdue.
