Being that the current superintendent will be retiring in the next 18 months or so. Does anyone else feel that we should be searching for a candidate to fill the position with high credentials as opposed to handing this important position to someone who has simply been affiliated with the department or is a current town employee looking for a pay raise?
This is a critical role that we as the taxpayers should demand be filled by someone with the skill set that can potentially save the town money around every corner.
This position carries a salary in the neighborhood of $70,000 plus per year! We should demand that all applicants not only have an engineering degree(a critical skill set for the position), but also a background in road maintenance.
The current state of the economy has put we the taxpayer in a position to demand more for our dollar. I'm sure we would have qualified persons lining up to fill this position at that $70k salary.
Lets not squander an opportunity to get the right candidate in and not simply hand out a good paying job to who is the best connected to the decision makers.
I disagree

I used to live in this little Village before it went corrupt under the new Mayor and Broad, but how can you pay a Superintendent only $70,000.00 when the current on is now well over a $100,000.00 and Plus his underlings would be making more then him or her. To the other Question the answer is yes you should promote within you department if they are qualify for the position meaning the same Qualification as what you have for now for the position for the person holding it.I do believe that you do have people there that are qualified for that position !! What it sounds like to me is the board / mayor does not want to pay for the position and they have a out side company or person as a favor for the position. Like I said a corrupt little village. I am glad I left

You are talking about the village and I am talking about the town. The corruption is what we should be aimed at avoiding. No more family members succeeding their relatives. Just put the town's best interests at the forefront.
Btw I am not a person who has friends or special interests in this town. Just a tax payer hoping for the best.
