I do know of that song.

And Sharky, you're right. That WOULD be nice....but like 'Realistic' says....something like that doesn't happen without some sort of catalyst.

Maybe an apocalypse is the only way to save this species..

As you may have heard, the Mayan calender ends on 12-21-2012. Supposedly the planets will be aligned in a way that they haven't been for thousands of years.
I really have no idea what will happen, but after watching the movie "The Road", it makes me wonder.
What are your thoughts on what we might expect to happen?
I will bet anyone 199,999,999,999.00 the world will not end in 2012.

I'm sure you're right. But I'm not entirely convinced that NOTHING will happen.

Well, if you are Christain and read the Bible, it says that NO ONE will know when the earth will end.... Now as far as science goes.... There isnt really anything we could do if a solar flare was to happen. Just be ready. But I wouldnt sit around and worry about it. It sucks that the Mayan's predicted it before Christmas! Thats muh favorite holiday....LOL Well you never know whats gonna happen, and we all are gonna be gone someday, so just enjoy life to the fullest no matter what!:)

the mayans thougth that history repeats it self every 52 years for example the mayans nearly got wiped out by the spainish when they invaded in 1520s 52 years later the spainish invaded Vilcabamba, the last independent remnant of the Inca Empire, is conquered by Spanish.
if they are true it will end by water but the mayans prophecies never really said that it is going to end when the last prophecies end it will reset it self to the start of the prophecies which states the a new age the mayans where highly advanced in astrology we see a time as a line mayans seen it as a circle forever repeating

History has a long and rich tradition of apocalyptic predictions – all of which were wrong – yet some people still think that this time ’round in 2012 is the real deal.

Why 2012?

Because of ancient Mayan calendars. Obviously.

Mayan calendars not only recorded the days and years, but also longer cycles of about 5 Millennia.

So they could easily make calendars that went 1,000s of years into the future. But, of course, 1,000s of years in the future from 1,000s of years ago brings us to current times when the Mayan calendars stop in 2012.

Modern new-agey people decided that the wise Mayans stopped making calendars because they knew when the world would end.

And because new agers are happy – though scientifically illiterate – people their vision of 2012 was a great spiritual awakening or world reboot or other hippy-consciousness-expanding nonsense that the Mayans, who spent time pulling strings of thorns through peoples’ tongue, probably didn’t have in mind.

To a normal person the thought that: calendar finishes therefore end of the world is an odd conclusion to draw.

After all, the amount of time in the Universe is infinite and the amount of stone is limited. So, at some point the Mayans had to stop carving calendars.

But never mind.

What should have stayed a fringe belief turned into mass hysteria with the 2012 disaster movie that swept the academy awards and the numerous emmy-nominated apocalypse documentaries on

::sigh::

The History Channel.
What happened to you guys?

Anyway. After this NASA became so inundated with questions that they had to take time away from their busy robot building, frontier pushing, knowledge expanding, civilization inspiring schedule, to write a webpage explaining that no, a human-sacrificing, stone-age society with neither wheels to pull carts nor glass to make telescopes, didn’t know more about science at the dawn of history than real scientists do today.

But the parade of crazy marched on anyway making wilder and wilder predictions for Earth including:

Geomagnetic Reversal (a process that unfolds on a geologic timescale, not a single day)
A collision with mysterious Planet X (That no astronomers have found)
A local star going supernova (Despite there being no such candidates)
An Alien Invasion (Which is ludicrous on the face of it… or is it?)
And a galactic synchronization beam, whatever the hell that is.
A sane person, at this point, would wonder how the Mayans were able to predict astro-physical anomalies thousands of years in advance and millions of miles away yet didn’t foresee the Spanish coming across the Atlantic.

And that’s because the Mayans never predicted apocalypse. The only people to claim the Mayans knew about the end of the world were distinctly not Mayans.

The 2012 phenomenon comprises a range of eschatological beliefs according to which cataclysmic or transformative events will occur on December 21, 2012. This date is regarded as the end-date of a 5,125-year-long cycle in the Mesoamerican Long Count calendar. Various astronomical alignments and numerological formulae related to this date have been proposed.
A New Age interpretation of this transition is that this date marks the start of time in which Earth and its inhabitants may undergo a positive physical or spiritual transformation, and that 2012 may mark the beginning of a new era. Others suggest that the 2012 date marks the end of the world or a similar catastrophe. Scenarios suggested for the end of the world include the arrival of the next solar maximum, or Earth's collision with a black hole, passing asteroid or a planet called "Nibiru".
Scholars from various disciplines have dismissed the idea of such cataclysmic events occurring in 2012. Professional Mayanist scholars state that predictions of impending doom are not found in any of the extant classic Maya accounts, and that the idea that the Long Count calendar "ends" in 2012 misrepresents Maya history and culture. Astronomers and other scientists have rejected the proposed events as pseudoscience, stating that they are contradicted by simple astronomical observations.
Sun Storms
The energy output of the sun is, like most things in nature, cyclic. Recent solar storms have been bombarding the Earth with so much radiation energy, it's been knocking out power grids and destroying satellites. This activity is predicted to get worse, and calculations suggest it'll reach its deadly peak sometime in 2012.
NASA predicts that a terrific solar storm will hit the earth in 2012 which will be 30-50% greater than anything before.A massive solar blast from the sun in 2012 could burn up the earth as could a collision with an asteroid or a comet.
The next solar maximum is expected in 2012.
The Atom Smasher
Scientists in Europe have been building the world's largest particle accelerator. Basically its a 27km tunnel designed to smash atoms together to find out what makes the Universe tick. They're predicting all manner of deadly results, including mini black holes. So when this machine is fired up for its first serious experiment in 2012, the world could be crushed into a super-dense blob the size of a golf ball.
Supervolcano
Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming,is famous for it's Old Faithful geyser. The reason for this is simple - it's sitting on top of the world's biggest volcano, according to geological experts. The Yellowstone volcano has a long cycle of eruptions and we're due for an explosion that will fill the atmosphere with ash, blocking the sun and plunging the Earth into a frozen winter that could last many years. The pressure under it is building steadily and geologists have set 2012 as a likely date.
The Physicists
This one's case of bog-simple mathematics. Physicists at Berkeley University have been crunching the numbers. and they've determined that the Earth is well overdue for a major catastrophic event. Even worse, they're claiming their calculations prove, that we're all going to die, very soon - while also saying their prediction comes with a certainty of 99%- and 2012 just happens to be the best guess as to when it occurs.
Polar Shift
We all know the Earth is surrounded by a magnetic field that shields us from most of the sun's radiation. What you might not know is that the magnetic poles we call north and south have a nasty habit of swapping places every so often. Scientists have noted that the poles are drifting apart roughly 20-30kms each year, much faster than ever before, which points to a pole-shift being right around the corner. While the pole shift is underway, the magnetic field is disrupted and will eventually disappear, sometimes for up to 100 years. The result is enough UV outdoors to crisp your skin in seconds, killing everything it touches.

I'll have you know that I PERSONALLY have spent well over a year and half researching and WRITING A BOOK on this subject. I was only offering FACTS that I have gotten from REPUTABLE sources about the matter... and yes, the first paragraph of both posts IS verbatim the introduction of my creation, but if you READ the rest of it, I challenge you to find anything that can be contradicted by a scientifically sound resource of your own.

NASA has also issued a Solar Storm warning. The only time in history that this kind of warning has been issued.
Solar flares are the main thing I am worried about. The sun is on an 11 year cycle, will be reaching its maximum around 2013.
