He sang with dolly P and had his own TV special for a while. He has a street named after him and his name is in the country music history books. He met all the big country music stars unlike great grandpa bieber ever will. I beleive he has or had a sister who lives in Springfeild. I don't know if porter wagnor is his birth name or show name. I think the speed limit on porter wagnor should be 65 because I am sick of looking at all the same old buildings. A few yrs ago in the towns parade ole porter before he died came to town but stayed in his bus the whole time, I waved but couldn't tell if it was him or a card board cut-out, I think he was feeling under the weather then. I don't think they have the porter wagnor home he was raised in on display which would be something to visit if you are a country music fan. Thats all I have.

I so agree with this!! He worked at the shoe factory, and at a meat market on the square when he lived in West Plains. Borrowed money from coworkers to go to other towns to sing when he didn't have the money to get there. His sister was a nurse who helped deliver me.

You should write a book and tell the world of this West Plains history. Not every town can say a Country Music star was from there.

Yes, he stood an sang on that circle of wood at the Grand O'l Opera like all the late greats of Country Music had and all the new artist dream of doing. He also made it way bigger then any of these Branson artist did who think they are something special but didn't have what ever it was Porter Wagnor had. I vote they change the name from West Plains to PorterWagnorville and all City Employees must wear Rhinstone covered Uniforms. How's that Guy?

Are you writing a book,or did you know him? What is the great interest you seem to have? I had a great uncle who said when Porter
Left town,he left owing my uncle 42 cents for gas that he had borrowed from my uncle to get to willow springs to sing. Lol. True story

Now thats a story for the guys book. Just think if your uncle would of invested that 42 cents back then he would have 3 bucks today. I think the Porter Wagnors of the world are the ones who kept country music alive and is the reason it's so big today besides the fact most country songs in the 80's and 90's were slowed down old rock n roll songs.

The people of Porter's day made country music, gave their lives heart and souls to make their music and make it to the Opry stage. Music row has let real country music be destroyed, and turned to pop country. They'll never be legends of country music again. Those days are gone

For a while? I guess if 21 years is "a while." The Porter Wagoner Show, aired from 1960 to 1981. There were 686 30-minute episodes taped.

I didn't say a while as something bad, I knew the show was on for a while but now I know how many yrs and how many episodes. You can tell what you know as facts without a question sounding all drama filled. So now share how many songs he mentioned West Plains in? How many times did he come back to West Plains for a visit? and did he ever try and pay back the other posters great uncle the 42 cents the guy gave him for gas to get to a willow springs show?

I remember him playing at the fair one year and refusing to meet people or sign autographs. Was very rude and unappreciative., and I have seen in the past where he had said he was from Springfield

Same goes for Jan Howard! She came to an assembly at fair view school with her sister because she finally came to town to see her sister. I recognized her told a bunch of kids she was an old country singer, we ran up asking for an autograph she got all hateful told us to get away she didn't have time for nonsense. I'll never forget that!
