Its how they rip you off, got one item and it had two tax codes: 9.5% as tax 1 and tax 2 was 7.5% for "Move Over Butter" I noticed it came to close to 20% as a single item, which is wrong... no one checks their receipts... they round off tax on EACH item... I noticed just about every bill here ended up adding up to at least 2.5-7.5% more in tax's then the products...the manager here is good and closed the register..but it will re-open-it's Saturday. We did it with one time 1.68 at even 10% would only be 1.88, but rang up 1.98 immediately... added another item which wasn't taxable and it split the two to come up with the 16.25% tax...

IT IS NOT AN EXTRA TAX!!! The grocery tax is a discounted tax. Which means that you pay less tax on food than other merchandise. Your food total will be taxed at the food tax rate ONLY and other merchandise will be taxed at the regular tax rate ONLY. Extra taxes only apply to CID taxes and alcohol/tobacco taxes.
I am completely dumbfounded that this is even being debated. Have those of you who are complaining not realized that all stores, including Wal Mart have been using this food tax rate for YEARS?!! This law passed a very long time ago people.
Thank you for educating us. I happened to see a posting asking about Taxes 1,2,3, & 4 on a Walmart receipt. Her receipt has taxes 1, 2, & 4. "Where is tax 3?," she asked. What is Tax 3 and Tax 4 if 2 is a grocery tax and 1 is the rest (non food?). Thanks

what is tax 3 and tax 4 in a Walmart receipt? The receipt shows taxes for 1, 2, & 4. Where is tax 3?

My friend posted this on Facebook and do not know the answer. Since I found this chain of comments, I thought I'd ask you guys. Thanks.

This has nothing to do with tax, but check your sales slip ,from walmart. I bought groceries there and felt sure my total was incorrect. Sure enough there was $101.20 charge for one item. I knew I did not purchase the item so I went to customer service right then and she did refund me. After I got home I checked my sales slip more thoroughly and found several other smaller errors. The prices in the computer are not the same as on the shelf. Also I bought wax scents two were $2.00 each and one was $3.75, however two were run through at $3.75. Also bought bread at $1.98 for one loaf another loaf exactly same for $2.68. I called the store for a price and was told $2.08. Needless to say I will no longer shop at walmart. CHECK YOUR SALES SLIP!!!!!

You are wise to take your business elsewhere. I never shop at Wal*Mart unless I absolutely can't find it anywhere else.

Pull one of your West Plains Wal-Mart receipts out and look carefully at it. Notice anything odd? Look at the sales tax they are charging. 7.762, and an additional 4.662..hmmm.. They are charging everyone 12.424% sales tax because when they leased the land it was in their contract to take care of all the maintenance on the parking lots and pavement. So our good friends at wally world snuck it in a bill that got passed that every business in that area can raise their own tax. It's just in that area..You can go across the street to Walgreens and they don't have it, you can goto the Snappy Mart past Wal-Mart, and they don't have it..Now, think about this..If wal mart makes $1,000,000 million per day during Christmas season alone, they are making $46,620 per day to upkeep their parking lot..Think it costs that much for upkeep? I don't.. So, my question is..1 How did this get passed, and 2. Who's pocketing all the extra cabbage? Folks, Wal Mart is a large part of what's killing our country and it's jerks like Trent Cochran who's doing the damage.
You think 12% is bad, how about 20.5%. Called tax 5 on my receipt and when i called to ask about it the phone just rang n rang. Yours 12 mine 20 the next sucker 40 or more, Walmart is a deception that laughs at the profits they steal from the poor.

Everyone should already know this. It was explained in every high school government class, and again in Economics 101 for those who went on to college. Missouri has different tax rates for different types of purchases. One for groceries, one for luxuries (restaurants), one for medicines, one for gasoline, one for cigarettes and alcohol (CINTAX), etc... each item is taxed accordingly. They don't all apply to the entire receipt total, only specifics. And for the record, the state and federal government controls and regulates taxing, not each store or business. If I don't understand everything on my receipt or have a question about it, I do the smart thing and ask while I'm at the register, so I'm only paying the correct amount. I don't assume.

We don't live in a communist state where people can simply take from those who have more then they do. We work hard and earn our own money. It's called enterprise. Sam Walton started with one store and was smart with his money. They had no children to hand it down to so before they died they gave away most of their money to help others. What remains today is actually a corporation with stock shares, not a family owned business. So, the wealth has already been shared.

I'm going to have to dis agree with you on something. Sam Walton did have children because his Daughter married into the family that owns JB Hunt trucking which besides one of the biggest trucking companies in America they also own a big part of the Rail Road which they are joined together with the other biggest trucking companies in America named Schnieder trucking the orange trucks. So with a old Arkansas hillbilly who started with one store sure did do good. Another little known cool thing this Sam did. Old Sam made his first employees all millionaires by making them invest some of their paychecks every week and by the time they retired, millionaires. Now in todays world under liberal rule everybody should share everything like in a old 60's hippie camp. Hippies wern't only un groomed animal smelling dope headed acid tripping war protesters, they were also stupid because they protest the war because of the killing but in todays world under the hippie liberal left rule Americans are killing eachother everyday in the streets and almost every big city is having protest everyday. Al sharpton, obama and eric holder have taken America back to the 60's.

It stands for nothing in particular. It's just another add on tax with a made-up code that Wal*Mart adds onto your purchases.

Wow, do you have some backwardsness to you. You are totally wrong on every count! Sam married a banker's daughter from Kingfisher, OK. He married into money, used that connection for financing. It wasn't long before he relocated from his first store in Newport, Arkansas to the Bentonville area. What did his father-in-law banker tell him to do? Buy the bank of Bentonville and use it to finance his store expansion. He then got so large that the Stephens of Little Rock (same Stephens who put Bill Clinton into power) brought in outside investors. Also, he has FOUR children. Little did the world know that little Sam gave all of the kids a share of the company many years before the world believed he was the world's richest man. He was a shrewd man, not the down-home foliage character he portrayed. The Family owns 60% of Wal-Mart. They have so much money they each make $2 million a day, personally, have a full-time large staff of attorneys and accountants figuring out how to avoid taxes. That's why they share the wealth, tax avoidance.

She is the woman who started the Crystal Bridges Museum. She has so much money she had to start a Museum for the Walton Foundation to give money to to avoid taxes. They can plummet down $200 million on some splattered paint on some canvas and have a huge tax deduction. Much smarter than keeping those kind of paintings in a private mansion. She also is an alcoholic with some legal issues that even her connections and billions couldn't cover up everything. In West Plains you can get away with more with 1/100,000 of her money. Lol. She stays down on a ranch in Texas where she can stay out of trouble, just like President Bush. She didn't marry into Hunt's family. The late JB Hunt and his wife Johnelle have class. They are the real deal, an American success story. He dropped out of 8th grade and built himself up from nothing trucking chicken manure. They don't actually own the railroads, but were smart to see the future was in intermodal container shipping, why you see their containers on all the trains. Hunt ended up wealthy, but never forgot his roots of being a simple truck driver and looked down on others, nor worried about being big shot living the glamorous life. Good downhome guy. What Americans should strive for.
