Do NOT quit cold turkey... most dangerous thing you can do.

Typically acamprosate, disulfiram or Naltrexone is prescribed to quit drinking along with very strong urges for counseling like AA. 99% of doctors won't prescribe a benzo that is addictive to an alcoholic trying to recover. It would be like giving alcohol to a substance abuser who's hooked on opiates. Its trading one thing form another. Doctors see it like this, if you abuse drinking and have that addictive personality then you will abuse the valiums or worse be on the valiums then drink. I do wish you the best of luck fighting your addiction.

actually benzos are just about the only thing that will detox an alcoholic. they work wonders with controlling the shakes, vomiting and the craps, seeing things, hearing voices, and seizures all typical in a true alcohol detox. That being said you only need them for a few days tops. Go to your family doctor and explain the whole thing. if your looking to detox then be off the benzos in a few days he may put you in the hospital for it.

Its not the only thing. I've seen tons of alcoholics detox without benzos. Going to your family doctor or a Physiatrist is deff your best bet. I'd recommend a Physiatrist, not saying your crazy. They have more training with the medications to help you and could also help with counseling. Good luck!

There are thousands of prescriptions for them in this town. Most doctors prescribe them to people who actually need them, then you have all the BHC patients selling their Xanax, Valium and all the methadone folks selling that shit.
It blows me away at doctors that will prescribe methadone to just about anyone. Sad.

It's funny that you should mention BHC giving out medications like that because I have a well documented panic disorder and I can't get the medication (klonopin) that I have been on for 10 years because they said the drug problem is so bad in this area. Oh and not to mention, are at least 2 doctors there that say they are personally against prescribing those meds because they believe anxiety can be controlled by other means. And methadone? Plesae. A lot of clinics in this area will tell you before you even make an appointment that they will not see you as a patient if one of your complaints are pain!!! Whatever.

I am in the same situation as you. Doctors do not like to prescribe Benzos. Every doctor has told me the same thing, they don't like to prescribe those drugs because of liability, weeding through drug seekers, and additional government oversight of their practice. I have always been referred to BHC who will then prescribe Paxil (am not depressed) and one of the older drugs that are not Benzos. Not only did it not help me as I am not depressed but it cost me a fortune. The few doctors that will write a prescription for Benzos will only write a precription for a 30 day supply. If you want more you have to make another appointment. And valium is the last one they will want to give you. They'll prescribe klonopin and ativan more easily. If you haven't found a doctor yet look in Mountain Home or Springfield. I found a great psychologist in Mtn Home but he was very pricey and wasn't in my health insurance's network. I now see a regular family physician in Springfield every 6 months.

Thank you for all of the nice comments and suggestions. I wasn't sure anyone would take me seriously. Trying to steer clear of BHC though. Maybe I will check out someone in Springfield (if I can get someone to drive me :)

Just thought I would save you the trouble for looking for a doctor around here. It's pointless and I had to find out the hard way. I wish you the best of luck! Hang in there :)

I agree that you should steer clear of BHC if possible. The few times I went there they made me feel like crap. The first time they treated me as if I was a drug seeker and a liar. My husband and I own businesses & properties, I dress professionally, have the luxury of wearing expensive jewelry, and years of documented anxiety issues....yeah, I'm going to go to BHC just to get some meds to abuse. They then progressed to I must have an eating disorder since I was underweight. Once I brought in notes from my primary physician and dentist they dropped the eating disorder thing. I quit going there after that until another doctor referred me to BHC again 2 years later. I was once again treated as a drug seeker. Then after 3 months my counselor decided that I must have been molested as a child and I just don't remember it. That would explain my chronic severe anxiety as well as my being underweight. I threw a fit and have never walked through those doors again.
