Howdy. My family just moved to West Plains, and we want to check out some of the local establishments. I've heard mixed reviews from friends about Cafe 37 and Roper's (are they they same thing?), and I know Topix brings out the most colorful folks and their colorful thoughts, but the internet reviews are all really old and not telling me much.
Basically what I've heard is that there's a new chef and the food is great, the service is hit-or-miss or really amazing depending on who you talk to, but it might not be the best place to take your kids, and the owner's always there, but that might not be the greatest thing in the world...
What gives, should I check them out or not? Where else is good to go in town?

everything is severely overpriced and the food just isnt that good. Who would pay 6 bucks for a draft domestic beer? Why would you pay 15 bucks for grilled chicken with some bland goop slapped on it?

Hmmm. I heard the food was overrated a couple months ago, but recently it started popping... but I did wonder about the prices, they seemed a little steep for the area. What about the atmosphere and service? Do they at least make up for it there? Fast food, clean place, friendly fun service, etc?

Is Colton's the place with the peanuts on the floor? That kinda weirds me out so I haven't braved it yet. I hear a lot about Ruby Tuesday's but I'm more interested in the local establishments... one Ruby Tuesday's is like every other Applebe- Ruby Tuesday's, I mean.

Oh, I did get to try A la Carte recently, that was yummo! Really unexpected fantastic experience!

Cafe 37 and Ropers Saloon are great places for a date or a friday night with friends. I wouldn't recommend taking kids. Cafe 37 is higher end and Ropers is a bar. There was a period of time, I think a year or two ago when they were having chef problems. Unfortunately, people around here aren't big on second chances unless you are McDonalds. Definitely check them out!

Is that the place that has tuna burritos and no regular menu? my friends went there and said they had to order at the counter and serve themselves like a fastfood place. and the servings of overpriced bland food that didn't taste like american chinese mexican or anything else were so small they were left starving had to go home and eat a meal.

I think your friend may have it mixed up with some other place. A la Carte does have a regular menu, as well as weekly and daily specials. You do order at the counter, but every time I've been, I've had my food brought to me, and my drinks poured for me. And the food was anything but bland. I didn't notice any tuna burritos on the menu, but they did have some duck tacos last month that were phenomenal.... and filling.

Cafe 37 is nice, service is same as everywhere, food was a bit too salty, the steaks were huge and chunky but fatty compared to ruby Tuesdays. The major factor getting me back to ruby Tuesdays is the same quality ( steaks are smaller, less fat so adds up to same value ) but much cheaper. I like their variety as well and the salad bar is consistently a winner. As for Colton's, the steaks are like cafe 37,not that much of variety but atmosphere is more laid back, although cheaper than cafe37 and dearer than ruby Tuesdays. I've had culinary experiences all over the world, and have a prejudiced palate unfortunately, which makes me regrettably picky, but overall I'm very happy with ruby Tuesdays. Best coffee in town is at Heroes, nice people too.

They were having Chef problems, but he went down the road to Dawt Mill, don't waste your time driving there, he still can't cook is very rude and does not play fair with the waitresses. If you want a dining experience with a true Chef you won't find it in these hills.

Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I also love Heroes - those are some genuinely good people, and their sandwiches are pretty tasty, too.:)

That's unfortunate. I was looking forward to visiting them sometime soon, I've heard great things about the scenery.

I don't so much care if I find a true chef, but good food is nice eat!

I think my sweetie and I are going to take the gamble and head out next weekend to try Cafe 37. Kiddos will be having a sleepover, and I don't know too many places that are great for a date!

My husband and I eat there on a regular basis. We have found that if you go to Roper's you can order off both menus, Cafe 37 + Roper's, so it's the better choice to sit in!:)
We have been going for years, we like the owner on a personal level and really enjoy the food!
It is reasonably priced, a little high most would say but you will not spend any more there than you will at Colton's or Tuesdays.
Try the goat cheese fritters for an appetizer, they are too die for!!

4 adults, 2 kids cost over $160 without salad, and only one kids order, at cafe 37, compared to 6 adults and 4 kids costing about the same at ruby Tuesdays, with separate kid orders plus unlimited salad bar and specialty drinks. I'm sorry but unless te prices go up with ruby Tuesdays they are the best in westplains! Cafe 37 needs to bring their prices down or add more incentive for people to come. The waitress bragged about coffee ace which wasn't anything special at all. The best dessert was back two years again at dawn mill, prepared by an excellent chef whose not there anymore. How can you beat Creme brle. Although price and portion wise, I wouldn't waste my preciously expensive gas to get there! And then come back with and empty wallet, half a gas tank and an growling stomache. Don't know how well it's doing now?
