Can anything be done about police harassment of teens?

My town of West Milford doesn't have much crime, and I don't think I've ever heard of a police officer having to fire his gun and I've lived here 20 years. Two of my boys are driving now and both have been pulled over numerous times because the police officers say they looked suspicious. Neither have records nor speeding tickets, but there are 2 police officers in our town that will always make them get out of the car, pat them down and search the car... without asking or getting permission. They have to stand there while the police repeatedly ask where the drugs are and if the kids question their rights, they are told that they (the police) can do whatever they want. Before letting them go, they will usually warn them that they will be watching them. One actually told my son he can pull him over for anything he "pulls out of his ass". Many of their friends have been getting the same treatment & by the same two policemen. I'm really fed up & feel powerless in how to stop this. Anyone with legal background know if something can be done? This has almost become a weekly occurance and my oldest son is getting to the point where he is afraid to drive. Most parents worry that their teens will get killed by speeding or a drunk driver, I have to worry about the very people sworn to protect and serve!

We have had a similar problem with 1 police officer in town He has told our oldest son nearly the same thing.He told him he will get him & to watch his ass.He has never had a ticket or anything.I have to wonder why too.
They should patrol the neighborhoods more,maybe the cars in our neighborhood wouldn't have been broken in to. But, the criminals that scout the neighborhoods know the cops here are busy running radar on the highway or the main roads.

I'm glad that the West Milford Police are pulling your sons over. I don't know where you have been lately lady, but we have an arsonist in my neighborhood. Hopefully, the cops will be able to use their guns soon. They are allowed to shoot arsonist. Four homes have been burned to the ground and a suspicious forest fire. I hope they pull over anyone that looks at them the wrong way. I have kids driving around the lake everyday like maniacs. Illegal unregistered dirt bikes, 4 wheelers, race bikes passing people doing wheelies, Copper bikes with no mufflers and now an arsonist. I feel the police should do more. Give the cops a break and let them do their job. Take the pacifier out of your sons mouth.

WMTAXPAYER,maybe you should reread what I wrote.The cops should be doing there jobs by patrolling the neighborhoods & not park & run radar.Don't dare preach to me about my sons & pacifiers,my family consists mostly of police officers & my sons also are pursuing becoming cops.Maybe you should take the pacifier out of your ass or put one in it since that's where your talking out of.
I too am a taxpayer & my family including our sons are upstanding,respectable citizens.

When these kids are riding there 4 wheelers,race bikes call the cops, as you said you feel the police should be doing more.I too wish they would,patrol,patrol,patrol..no t parking,chit chatting & radar.

Respectable, It sure sounds like it with your post. I don't think the cops need someone that goes back to his mommy everytime he has a problem. Good luck.

Well you sound more like a cry baby,you complain about things & do nothing about it but pout.
Oh P.S My husband is a police officer,just not in this town. My son did not come back & tell his mommy,he was "man enough" to handle the situation.We found out through a concerned citizen who witnessed what went on.

I know you won't because you sound like a know-it-all and like to blame everyone else for your poor parenting skills. I've been in more court rooms than you could imagine. If you reread your first post,you were speaking about both our sons.
I have excellant parenting skills along with my husband.
Yes,it's wonderful that you yourself seem to become crass when your opinion is not agreed with.
My husband also has spent numerous hours in a courtroom ,in his profession & if the harassment to our son continues over a high schoolish attitude of 1 of WM finest.It leaves us to resolve it with a complaint & IA taking over.

If your husband is a cop, which I doubt. He would handle it a different way. Instead of IAD. He should go in and talk to the cop first. Enough said on this issue.

I've read the posts,and I can say similar things have happened with my son.It was over a girl.The cop said he would get him someday and he couldn't do a thing about it.
We talked with a friend who is an attorney,his advice was to go to the police station and speak with the Chief.They would take it from there.
The police should concentrate on protecting and serving the community.

I also had a problem with a WM Officer last week with my daughter. I also live in WM and my daughter had her first accident. When I got to the scene of the accident the officer was talking and treating her like a criminal. His attitude and tone of voice with me was enough to file a complaint with the police dept against him. I was told the would be an internal investigation and the police dept would get back to me. I wonder if it is the same officer WM Mom has a problem with! An Officer on a power trip!!!!! It's to bad when good kids in town are treated this way, when the do need help they are going to be afraid to call the police!
