The West Mifflin Area school board may seek an appraisal on New England Elementary School to determine its market value so that its sale could be considered to balance the 2012-2013 or future budgets.
Superintendent Dan Castagna asked the board to seek the appraisal Thursday, though he stressed that no decision had been made to close the school.
"Some tough decisions have to be made in the very near future and that may be one of them. We need to know hard numbers," Mr. Castagna said of the appraisal.
Mr. Castagna warned the board last month when it approved a resolution not to raise taxes above the Act 1 limit set by the state that the district would be facing big cuts in order to balance next year's budget.
The action to seek the New England appraisal was on the agenda for Thursday's workshop meeting. The board will vote on the matter at its Jan. 19 regular meeting.
The board had discussed briefly closing New England during its budget deliberations for the 2011-2012 budget, but decided to keep it open.

You are an ass, the future of our kids in this borough depends on the quality of schools there is to attract the younger generation to raise a family here. The south end of the borough pays the most taxes, the north end is turning into Duquesne! This bourgh is so f*cked up to let this happen. Raise taxes and keep this school open...Mahal left and her kids went there so keep the family employed...so wake up or we will be Duquesne before you know it Phil and co!!!!!

Why should the school remain open? Half the kids don't even belong there and the district has to foot the bill to have these kids bussed. The majority of the children who go to New England are Homeville kids-if you want your kid to go to the school so you can keep up your hoity toity charade sell you house and buy one in the appropriate home school neighborhood. The crappiest thing about the whole thing is that New England has the smallest class sizes in the district. Since we are already paying to bus other kids that don't belong then we should be able to remove some of the kids from Homeville and Emerson and put them in New England!! Wouldn't that blow the minds of all the stuck up phonies who put on heirs and act like they are somthing they are not!!! Since Whitaker is it's own community maybe all the whitaker kids and monview heights kids should go to New England making the class sizes even across the board!!!!
