The water is pumped drained ot before the rice harvest. Then its pumped back just to attract ducks. The ducks raise mostly in the dakotas & canada. the predators have been givin the nesting grounds some problems. the greese raise their young anyplace. many times the canada goose is a unwanted pest. I contrubute money to ducks unliited. the ivory bill is extinct and thats not a disaster. We can get along fine without it. (IF) the Ivory bill is extinct, that is just another sad, pathetic chapter in our history. Rain must be God's tears for the destruction we have brought upon some of his beautiful creations. Predators have found your ducks in the rice fields? They have? Really? You make it sound like that's a bad thing. Only someone living in a Disney Fantasyland would be upset about it.

Me and my FAT buddy may be a lot of things but one thing we are not is liars! We were kids and it was fun. I still hunt for the pleasure of it but I do not kill just to kill. I have made amends for it a thousand times over, I hope, and I am prepared to answer to my maker for all of my sins when the time comes!

Bird Watcher wrote: <quoted text> I have seen the pileated ,in woods behind my house. So beautiful, and very vocal ! I can only imagine the experiance of the sight of an ivory bill . The pictures I have seen look like a prehistoric bird. I will never forget the first time I saw a scarlet tanager ! I have also seen a blue grosbeak , and many rose-breasted grosbeaks. I think that those of us that enjoy natures beauty are outnumbered . Unfortunately, you may be right. But I think that may be changing. Just look at the statistics of how many people are getting involved in wildlife viewing. I personally help people become aware of nature's beauty with my photography. It's up to people like us to get others involved in conservation. I too have been a member of Ducks Unlimited because of all they do to conserve wildlife habitat. But there's more to conservation than just ducks and species that can be hunted. Songbirds need our help too.

Churmudgeon wrote: <quoted text> Can you make a living by seeing those birds. Will gawking at them pay the morgage? I enjoy seening wild things. Like a herd of deer. I even have a pet deer. but when wildlife destroy,s my crops or molest my animals its not enjoyable any longer. there is a time & place for everything. But there are Limits. When something goes beyond those Limits a person has to do what is necessairy to protect their livelyhood. "Can you make a living by seeing those birds. Will gawking at them pay the morgage?" Everything isn't about making money to me. Some things I do for pure enjoyment. But now that you mention it, yes, I do make money from watching birds. I also spend money to watch them.

The first gun I ever used was a pellett rifle. Pump that sucker up ten times and you could kill almost anything if you hit it in the eye. I liked to go shoot the bumble bees off those big pink thistle blooms. You ever get shot in the butt with a pellett rifle that smarts! When I was very little I was at a friends house one afternoon. We where watching Gene Autry on the TV. A big mouse would occasionally scurry across the living room floor. The friends mom shot it with a BB gun! while it was moving! She chewed tobacco also. She was a very accurate spitter. I hadnt thought about this event in more than 40 years.

I enjoy watching my poultry livestock & crops grow & thirve. I also enjoy the birds, We feed sugar water to the humming birds. I enjoy watching my Roller & Tumbler pigeons fly. I dont enjoy wildlife & birds that are pest & predators. We let the mud dauber barn swallows build and raise their young on our home and out buildings.I can kill a snake ot let him be. Its up to the snake. When you live in a rual agrarian setting and intend to derive a profit from you endavors its quite different. Its not the same world that city or urban folks can afford to tolerate. We have a saying If you cant shoot your own dog or shoe your own horse you shouldnt have either one. And that saying has almost nothing to do with horses & dog,s.

Mine stay confined in a large enclosure ans I let then out to fly and do acrobatics every so often. I have a set of pigeon bars that let,s them reenter the dove cote and not leave. All pigeons poop and it is corrosive. It causes infrastructure like bridge beams to rust. They can spread poultry deseases. They poop on everything. I also kill feral pigeons I dont want them around my pure breed birds. The pigeon breast are edible.
