I was in Melbourne a few months ago , and someone pointed out to me all the Realtors that stand in line in front of a place called Daily Bread , and talk about all the money they made in 2003-2006 .

Why someone in Milwaukee is spouting off about this area I'm sure I don't know.
GOOD: This area is not perfect, but nowhere is. The Indian River is beautiful, the beaches are wonderful, the weather is great most of the time.
BAD: The mosquitos in the western portions of the county are the size of cats. Babcock Street has more potholes than asphalt, and crime in Palm Bay is out of control. Melbourne and West Melbourne are arguing over water rights and costs, and the more things change the more they stay the same.

Most people are good honest decent people. Moved back here from Naples in Collier County, where I had lived for 10 years. I was astounded when people let me pull out into traffic!(Collier definitely has the rudest drivers in the world). Naples was full of rich snobs who play golf all the time and bitch about traffic. Melbourne is full of blue collar people who drink beer and bitch about traffic. Hmmmm, lots of similarities.
Much younger population here than Collier, more diverse, people here form all over the world due to the space center and university.
Interesting place to live with some quirks. And Orlando is only an hour away if the parents miss huge traffic jams.
Laidback is the key word here. Especially beachside, tell the parents the official shoe here is the flip-flop.

It would be almost impossible to be more laid back than Melbourne (although Cocoa Beach is close). I told you, beachside here in IHB/Satellite/Melbourne Beach, the official show is the flip-flop! People wear them EVERYWHERE, the grocery store, the post office, their workplace (if allowed). VERY laid back.

hello everyone!
I live in Illinois and have always wanted to move to Florida. My job will relocate me anywhere on the east coast. I was looking at Melbourne until I found this web site.
Can somebody please recommend a nice town north between Port st Lucie and Jacksonville that a 30 year old woman can start a new life in?
I'm looking for a small town feel, a house where my doggies can run and a nice area where I can meet friendly people.
please help...

Don't get me wrong, there are lots worse places to live than Melbourne. Port Saint Lucie and Palm Bay are definitely worse. Anywhere laid out by GDC is horrible soulless and with no proper town to speak of.(PSL, PSJ, PB, Deltona, etc). The Mackle Borthers were idiots when it came to town planning.
Viera is nice, parts of Rockledge are very nice, Merritt Island South end is nice, you have to pick and choose. There is a vibrant arts scene in the whole area, especially visual arts. Anywhere over here is nicer and safer and more spacious than Orlando. North of T'ville I don't know much about.
South of here , Stuart/Jensen Beach/Hobe Sound all good. Stay out of PSL and Ft. Pierce. Vero okay but full of old farts.

Melbourne is called "the land that time forgot" by locals. It is a sleepy, nothing-to-do town and I kick myself every single day for having moved here. If you truly can pick your location, I recommend Jacksonville's southeastern suburbs (St. Augustine, Ponte Verda). Much more to do in the JAX area. Brevard County is a dead end, especially for a younger person wishing to build a life and make friends. Best of luck to you!

About 13 years agoo I moved to Melbourne with my parents. I was at the young age and only wanted to have fun. I was not to impressed with Melbourne,or the satellite beach area.I did enjoy boating , fishing etc.. I dont think i was ready for such a layed back lifestyle.I moved back up north and made virginia beach my home to stay. Now my parents who also moved to cincinnati, are now retired and have bought a modular home in Melbourne, they will be snow birds. My parents didnt care for the area years ago, due to work. So, the big question is, Has the area changed? Has it grown any.Whats fun to do, and are the bugs and gators out of control?
Are there any great restraunts? Just wondering. I want my parents to be happy, and not be bored sitting down there with nothing to do. THANKS FOR ANY INFO.
i lived there in the mid 70's and i loved it and still do. the best times of my life.

I have been here since 1971. I grew up in W.By God Melbourne FL. This was at one time a great place to live. Now its a nightmare. The down fall when they built that dymn mall on 192. this was the down fall of West Melbourne.

Its all over crowded urban sprawl has taking over. Did I forget to bring up the pi$$ poor attitudes around here. They come from all over the place and act like they can do as they see fit.

You don't know what urban sprawl is. Go to Northern Virginia some time. Melbourne isn't crowded at all. It is however, a sleepy, dead-end town with nothing to offer; unless you like mosquitoes and a smelly river.

Unfortunately I currently live in Melbourne, and I grew up in Central Florida. Brevard County has ALWAYS been a dump.
