Full story: The Indianapolis Star

Over the years, Honda President Fukio Takeo has heard plenty of explanations for the decline of the Detroit auto industry.

There was an article in this week's Automotive News that discussed how even though vehicle sales in Japan are falling, the Japanese automakers continue to increase production for export. The rest of the world is supporting the Japanese car industry, and anyone who does not believe that the Japanese government has a hand is this is very naive. Also, we are starting to see the arrogance of the leaders of the Japanese auto industry. No one really wins in a tariff war, but there should be an insistence on a level playing field. And that is not currently the case.

And anyone who thinks the UAW didn't strangle the Big 3 is more naive.

American cars companies suffer from high costs due to the union and from very poor quality products.

I'll take my Ohio-built Honda Accord over anything from Ford, Chrylser or GM any day.

Hope when the Japanese want expansion again, and this time invade our country, I sure hope they DON'T bayonet all the babies again like they did in Singapore, and Shanghai, at the start of world war 2 (damn gotta love those ruthless Japanese!)but more so you gotta love those ignorant AMERICAN'S that support them. so all I can say is E.S.a.D!(figure it out)

On your first point, the odd thing is that the Japanese pay almost identical wages and benefits as those under the UAW contract. Seondly, check your facts as quality gap between the domestics and the imports has virtually been eliminated in the last 10 years. On the third item, that is your right and perogative and I respect that. However, the fact remains that the Japanese enjoy a tremendous cost advantage due to the value of the Yen. And that is determined by the Japanese central bank. The reason the transplants can pay the wages in benefits is that the actual cost in Yen, which is all they care about, is lower than the domestics.

No, I have a Masters Degree in Engineering, and an MBA. And I'm a retired US Navy pilot, a graduate of the Naval Test Pilot School at NAS Patuxent River.

I flew F-14's and H-53's during my career. Flew the V-22 Osprey, too, a few time before I retired.

I don't need the UAW for anything, back then or now.

No, Toyaota and Honda aren't saddled with an exhorbitant and overly costly health benefit program like the Big 3 are.

And no, I don't think the quality gap is close to being narrowed yet.

The legacy costs of the domestics are in retiree health care and in the not too distant future the transplants will start facing that problem as well. And addressing quality a lot of the problem is in the perception on both sides, negative for the domestics and positive for the imports. I found it interesting that Toyota had a huge number of engine problems relating to sludge build-up and hardly a word made it into the press. I have been associated with the retail auto industry for over 30 years, both import and domestic, and I can say with confidence that the quality gap has narrowed, regardless of the perception.

As always, trusting the Souteast Asians, Chinese, and Japanese is a mistake. They have for years propped up their industry by government. Free enterprise is not in their vocabulary, winning even by selling at a loss and wiping out the competition is their way. Controlling their currency is the way of their government and society/industry. Keep in mind that more than once, Japanese, Chinese, Korean, and other industries have dumped cheap labor foreign goods and materials in our country, thanks to WalMart, always low prices, it should be China Mart instead. Cutting cost is one thing, sacrificing U.S. jobs and standard of living is another. The net is U.S. executives and higher management want this as it increases profits and their stock option value, etc., while Middle Class workers lose.
Keep in mind that Global Economy means we have to give up our standard of living to boost theirs, India, China, Korea, etc. There is only so much value in human capital to go around and if it is so cheap because there are a billion workers in Southeast Asia, India, China, etc. then we lose and they gain. WalMarts always low prices does not mean quality, safety, and does not mean that where they are made there are fair labor practices, OSHA, EPA. The environments of China and India will be comparable to early 1900 U.S. with coal pollution everywhere. We think we had a pollution problem in the 1960's and 70's in the U.S. China and India will pollute their rivers so that 90 percent of the water is undrinkable. Currently there is a brown cloud of smog over India, China and Southeast Asia and it is affecting the West Coast of the United States. At this rate, China will bypass in 1-2 years the entire pollution output of the U.S. and Europe combined. Think of it, cars are just now becoming popular in India, imagine half a billion vehicles. Currently India has only 3500 miles of highway as opposed to 50,000 for China. The smells are incredible in both countries, awful, stench.

Also in reponse to previous articles on healthcare and benefit costs. Keep in mind that Japan has socialized medicine and retirement is saved for, not part of their culture.

Yes, we must make the Japanese automakers raise their prices, so that the consumers will get screwed like they do by the American automakers. That is insanity.

Someone with barely a High school education working as a glorified robot doesn't deserve the wage the UAW demands for the drone.

It's barely semi-skilled work for most jobs in an auto plant. About $12 an hour is all it's worth.

And you don't have a clue what I do for a living now, dickwad.

Auto workers don't design 'em, don't price 'em, don't market 'em, just assemble 'em! To those who think they (workers) are overpaid...put in an application. Quality...all vehicles have moving parts so wear will always occur. The second biggest factor in the vehicles longevity, building costs, the biggest, in all cases...the driver!
