My wife is in the process of grad school research. Purdue has appeared on the list, and is currently in her top 5. We're doing some city research for each school and need help with some questions. So if you don't mind helping out, can you please answer a few questions for us. We've found that median rent in West Lafayette is around 800 bucks, but every rental site we go on, we see it's closer to 1200 for what we're looking for. What we can't find any data on, is how much utility costs are. What is the average you pay for power, heating, water & sewage? Also, if you have children, what are the average day care costs (when we move there, we'll have a 2 year old and a 4 year old)? If anyone can help out, we'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks so much!!

Rents in West Lafayette tend to be about $200 a month higher than in Lafayette. If you will have reliable transportation and don't mind a 15-20 minute drive (or wouldn't mind taking a bus, which I believe is either free or dirt cheap for college students), you could save quite a bit by living on the other side of the bridge.

Where are you looking for houses (craigslist, newspaper, etc.)? I've recently been looking on Craigslist for a 3 bedroom in Lafayette, and I've found quite a few nice ones for $700-$1000 a month.

Utility costs vary a lot from house to house, depending on how much insulation you have and what kind of appliances you have. Our electric bill runs about $150-%175 in the summer while running 4 window AC units. Our gas is about $40 a month in the summer. In the winter, our electric is $80-$100, and our gas is $150-$200. We have a gas stove, gas water heater, and gas furnace. Our dryer is electric. All year round, our water/sewage bill runs about $40, but in the summer it drops about $10 because they cut the sewage rates to account for swimming pools, watering the lawn, etc.

It's been a little while since I've used daycare, but from what I've overheard from others, it would run about $150 a week for 2 children full time. The last time I used daycare, which was about 2 years ago, I paid $125 a week.
