Nurse in need of change

Princeton, WV

#1 Dec 16, 2011
My fiance grew up in Ashe County and loves it very much but hasn't been there except for a couple short visits in 6 years. He is now trying to convince me, since I have graduated LPN school, to pack up my entire life and move 5hours away from all of my family & friends. I don't really mind moving but neither my fiance or I really know much about the area. So my questions are how do y'all like living in West Jefferson??? Are their any colleges in the are that offer an RN program so I can further my career??? Are there many places in the area that employ nurses??? Are drugs and violence prominent issues??? And finally would you recommended raising children there??? Thank you for your help!!!

I live in WJ with a husband and two children and we are desperate to get out. We would have already if we did not own a home here and in a bad selling market have been unable to sell. My husband grew up here too but he is sickened by the way things are in Ashe county now. It is not the way it was when he grew up and is not the town he loved. You will most likely have to commute out of Ashe for work, There is one small hospital. There are few jobs here and most do commute. You will have to commute to finish your RN as well. No University in Ashe. Drugs are an issue here, Ashe county is small but still has one of the highest meth rates in the state. In recent years they have made many arrests for pills and meth so I am not saying they dont care or are not trying because I dont think that is the issue but it is still very bad. Not what I consider a good small town. The schools here have HUGE numbers for violent crimes/offenses compared to other schools across the state. These are numbers of public record, not just my thoughts. The schools are very political. There is alot of bullying and favoritsm that goes on and is often ignored because it is a small town and the administration knows that "so and so's" parents own this business or that or is a teacher or principal etc. There are some good teachers but as a whole the school system in the county is awful. As much as I would like someone to come into the county and buy my house so that I could leave I would never recommend someone moving here and absolutely WOULD NOT recommend raising children here. Alot of people here think its a small town and better than bigger towns but I am from a bigger town and my family and friends and are still in those bigger towns and they dont have half the issues we do here so to me the proof is in the "pudding" so to speak. The numbers dont lie. It is what it is whether you like it or not. I think alot of the locals just dont want to see how bad it has gotten here and sort of ignore it. Good luck on your search for a new place.

Honestly you are a fine example of whats wrong with Ashe County. During that entire post of yours all you did was put our county down and did not use one paragragh. Knid of the pot calling the kettle black don't you think.
Nurse while Honestly likes to paint a bad picture about Ashe County you have to remember that we have always been poor farming county. Now you should have no problem finding a job as a nurse in either West Jefferson or Jefferson or in Boone which is only 30 minutes away. Also there are a couple of places where you can finish you schooling.
There is Caldwell community college in Boone that has a nursing program. Wilkes comminity college also has a nursing program both are 30 mintues to an hour away depending on where you live in Ashe. Wilkes comminity college also has a campus in West Jefferson but I don't know if they teach nursing there.
If you like the laid back country life you will most likely like it here. But if you are a city person you will be very unhappy. As far as the drugs it is sad to say that is true but to be honest it is not just Ashe but is happening everywhere. We have changed from the small county where everyone knew everyone to a county where very few people know each other any more.
There are lots of people like my self who grew up here and would help someone anyway they could. But please under stand the old times here have their own way of doing things and don't take kindly to people putting their nose in their business. If your fiance grew up here he knows what I am talking about. I will not get into the snow/ice and bad weather I will leave that to your fiance

I was born and lived in ashe until i was ten then we moved to wilkes. I still have family in both places. We have family property in warrensville that has been in the family over 100 yrs. Now i will say my family moved to wilkes for work but now that work is gone too. As far as drugs, bad economy + no jobs= drugs wherever u live. I live in a small town in VA now that has similar problems; however, i would move home in a heartbeat.

I absolutely agree with "Honestly". I'm sorry to see the post was old, but good to know you may have gotten out of here. My family and I should be gone by October. I have never been so totally let down by anything in my life. I was born here, they moved to FLA when I was one. I thought my children and my marriage would be safer and stronger here. The place has has nearly ripped us all apart. The town is nothing but depressing and the people are clickish and hide behind a mask of false christian perspective. I'm ashamed. My kids were wayyyyy better off in a big city by the beach. God willing I'll get them back there. The high school was completely full of drugs, gossip, incest was spoken of in front of son, teen pregnancy, you name it they got it...and they cover it all up. No one talks here they say "we don't discuss that" or "that's not our business" or "bless their hearts" yet they all go around with this totally clickish better than you attitude that I find sickening. The town will get exactly what it deserves it's happening already.
