Baffled w/bullshit once again. The WI BOE has once again been able to shift the focus of our community and pit neighbor against neighbor. The argument of which schools to close has consumed our town and that's EXACTLY what they want! They don't want you to even THINK about where the other 3-4 MILLION DOLLARS is going to come from this year, because it's going to come from YOU!

Wake up! The closing of a school or two will never bridge a 6 MILLION DOLLAR shortfall gap! And that's only for this year! What's about next year, how will they bridge another 4 of 5 MILLION DOLLAR shortfall gap? Wake up West Islip, this is not an income problem THIS IS A BOE/EMPLOYEE CONTRACT/SPENDING PROBLEM! Our current BOE continues to negotiate contracts with the district employees as if WI is still getting a ton of state aid. Wait till the spring, we'll hear "But, it's in their contracts, we HAVE to pay it. No, Johnny can't have a text book because we HAVE to pay the district employees outrageous amounts of money and benefits, it's in their CONTRACTS" sniff, sniff, sob, sob. Yet, it's the BOE who continue to approve these insane contracts KNOWING the district doesn't and will not have the income to cover the tab! Notice I said 'approve' the contracts not "negotiate" contracts. Big difference.Bad decision after bad decision. Do you really trust them to make an intelligent, better yet, CORRECT decision about anything at this point? After the announcement of which schools will be shut, remember neighbors, we are still short 3-4 MILLION DOLLARS!

West Islip BOE is pushing the residents into bankruptcy which will turn this town into a dump..........The BOE caves into the teacher union and admin on everything and puts the residents in the hole..........BOE are the holes.

Just drive around our beautiful town. Have you noticed how many homes are for sale? People are HURTING, out of work. Those of us that are lucky enough to have jobs have not had salary increases in YEARS. The ENTITLEMENTS of the educational system are beyond comprehension to me. I am a healthcare professional. I pay for my own healthcare insurance. I work long hours. I'm disgusted of repeatedly hearing, it's for the children. Our teachers work hard. Who is disputing that? I'm saying, look at our economy & start implementing realistic salary & budgetary proposals which can trickle down to the average Joe that pays taxes in this town. Some of us are holding on by a thread, don't ask me to pay MORE for our schools. Cut wherever possible, & start from the top. Salaries & entitlements.

Is it just me or has anyone else noticed that certain community members/BOE members; once very vocal,very-ready-to-comment-on -Patch-at-the-drop-of-a-hat have suddenly become silent about the massive $ shortfall and the school closings? They're not even blogging on Patch under FAKE names anymore either!

The moment someone asked LaRosa to comment on why we have so many administrators (being paid upwards of 150,000.00 a year), you're right, she stops commenting on patch just as you have pointed out. It's complete quiet.
There are countless ways to begin the process of freeing up money for our district residents. Money flies out the window easily in this district of ours, granted we aren't alone. It's not about what is going on in other communities though. It's what residents here a shouldering. It's a poor arguement about what is happening in other areas. If we can't afford to foot the bill it's up to us to say ENOUGH!
I know people are occupying wall street and other places and they behave like spoiled rotten bratts, but this community needs to gather together by the hundreds and attend the next BOE meeting and say loud and clear, no if ands or buts about it, IT'S OVA! WE ARE DONE SHELLING OUT OUR HARD EARNED DOLLARS FOR THE SAKE OF SOME STUPID NEWLY CREATED, UNNECESSARY ASST. TO THE ASST. SUPERINTENDENTS JOB! DONE!
CHRISTMAS IS COMING AND MANY OF MY FRIENDS ARE FOR THE FIRST TIME HURTING LIKE NO TIME BEFORE. IT'S NOT FAIR, IT'S UNJUST AND THE GRAVY TRAIN NEEDS TO RETURN TO THE STATION AND LET OFF A WHOLE BUNCH OF EMPLOYEES WHO DON'T BELONG IN OUR EDUCATION SYSTEM OFF! LET'S DO THIS!

Things are just plain bad for everyone. Just about every locale on Long Island is feeling this current (we never came out of it) recession.

Yes, it's bad for everyone, yes, other school districts are in a financial bind...Our BOE loves to sing that song. Listen to a new tune...WE ARE NOT EVERYONE, WE ARE NOT OTHER SCHOOL DISTRICTS--WE ARE WEST ISLIP! BOE fix the financial problems that YOU have created. BOE stop spending money WI doesn't have and then blaming the state or lack of industry in our town. IT'S A SPENDING PROBLEM, NOT AN INCOME PROBLEM. BOE you have made a mess of our school district with bad decision after bad decision. FIX IT BY PLAYING HARD BALL WITH ALL OF THE DISTRICT EMPLOYEES OR RESIGN YOUR POSITIONS!

Can someone tell me if the newly approved substitute teaching assistant Ann Marie Burns is related to Bernadette Burns?
Can someone tell me why retired elementary teacher MaryJane McGrath (her salary was over 110,000.00 yr) has been approved by the board of ed to now be a substitute teacher for the district? So let me get this straight, she'll be collecting her hefty pension, paid health benefits AND a paycheck from our district? What the hell is going on!!?? Nicely done, board of ed. Another great decision. I'm with the poster who said the board of ed should either fix their bad decisions that've led us all into the financial mess we're in now or collectively resign their positions.

Interesting questions. Doubt you'll get an honest answer. Didn't the boe hire Blau's daughter to?
Didn't the daughter get tenure from the boe two weeks after Blau retired? Oh, forgot that was a coincidence. LOL

The whole board of education should step down.
