Yes the district looks more balanced on the nice colorful map unless of course your 1 of the families in the area of green west of Higbie and just north of Sunrise.
Then of course you used to go to Westbrook, have neigbors going to Oquenock and live across Sunrise from those going to Manetuck, but you have to travel across town past Oquenock families who live closer to Bellew so that your son or daughter who is closer to OQ. or Man. can go to Bellew.
I feel badly for that area of town. It was not a fair relocate for that group of Westbrook families
at all!
The other thing about the pretty little map is it doesn't show the realities of have 597 students in and ES building @ 95% capacity with more children than either ES. Not to belittle our other 3 schools which are not that far behind.
Are you one of those families? Probably not. I am friends with one of them and they are not upset about how the map was drawn and that they are going to PJB. In fact her child is happy because he likes the playground there better than Oquanok. Out of the mouths of babes! If only we could all follow the simple logic of an 8yo.

Unfortunately, the excitement of a playground will only last so long. I was with two of those families today that were very upset. Not so much over going to PJB, but over going to Beach. They feel their kids won't even get to meet up with their friends in MS. The problem is this was not a necessary thing to happen. Had Westbrook stayed open, it, along with Manetuck, could have accomodated all of the children north of Sunrise. That makes many of these families feel worse.

And remember you will get positive feedback from Kirdahy families because every single one of them are going to Bayview, ALL TOGETHER, along with their principal. So they will have a new building, their same principal, and almost every single one of the teachers from Kirdahy. Much nicer then being sent to three different elementary schools and possibly a new middle school. The elementary school getting the fewest number of Westbrook students is also getting their principal, so most of them will not get to stay with him. Just something to consider when you talk about positive feedback.

The one thing I will say to those going to PJB is that it is a wonderful school! Mr. Hunter is a terrific principal. Not to say that the others aren't, but the school it's self is great. It just seems like that 1 group of families was the most seperated from their neighbors. Where all else seem to be a more tight community group.

Personally I wouldn't go back to the West. vs Oq. thing because with numbers this large the only enrollment eleviation would have been 3 schools being left open up north.

But we all now know for sure that ship has sailed so we'll see what September brings!

Like some board members have said- plan for the worst and hope for the best. Not sure this is what they were referring to but it applies.

I'm just wondering logistically how else should Captree have been redistricted? Where do you (or anyone else) see the map being drawn differently for Captree. I have heard the "South" was given special treatment over "North" which is just ridiculous and I am North.

I don't think Kirdahy should have been redistricted anywhere else. I am very glad they did it the way they did. It is one of the only things that makes sense in this whole mess. I am just pointing out the difference in emotions felt by Kirdahy parents as opposed to Westbrook parents.

I was with a group of about 13 parents yesterday (none of them even knew about Topix BTW). It was a mixture of Bayview, Oq & WB. All were happy and thought it was the right decision that needed to be done and some even thought it should have been done long ago. One said her daughter was very upset at first but as she explained to her who she would know she calmed down.
So in my experience yes it has been positve feedback.
Not buying a word of your post and no one else should either. You honestly think there are 13 WI parents of school-aged children all together in one place and not one of those parents had ever heard of WI TOPIX? Not possible. No, take that back it might be possible in the wonderful world of disney if we all just wish upon a star!!! LOL

As they already voted to close 2 elementary schools (which I STILL maintain is a BAD decision - look at the Oquenock and Manetuck enrollment numbers - we are PACKED to the gills over on the north side)I have to say the redistrict map looks GOOD - the boundaries are reasonable....

My MAIN concern is going to be the LACK OF SPACE for elementary extracurricular activities such as dance and clubs, etc.......

We are in for a RUDE awakening come September. I just hope that there is room for all of the field days, variety shows, dance programs, cub scout and girl scout meetings, soccer/t-ball/lax/football practices, PTA events, etc., etc.,

Everyone will be needing the HS auditorium for plays, shows, etc, because of the fact that there are ALMOST 600 kids in Manetuck and over 500 in Oquenock........No way all the families and friends will fit in a MS auditorium for anything and NO WAY even a band concert can be held in the elementary schools with that many people..........It's a real shame (although I have to say, I'm sure relatives won't mind having to miss a 4th grade orchestra concert or the like........We all know what THAT is like, LOL)

And I have to say, I feel so badly for the Westbrookers who are split between 3 schools!!!! It has been said above, Kirdahy is ALL GOING TOGETHER, a small section of Bayview has been moved out to make room (and I feel for those children as well) but Westbrook is being RIPPED APART! I stated to Mr. Gellar - not that I want to leave Oquenock but is it fair that I am closer to PJB than some Westbrookers who are slated to go there??? It isn't fair to them! Those kids are being split up and taking the brunt of this redistricting plan....UNFAIR!

Are you kidding me?! I only just stumbled upon it from Rich's post in Patch to check this out. Dont kid yourself there seems to be a handful of the same people going back and forth on here. Mostly rumors. You were not one of my friends present so you have no idea who knew what. You are really naive if you think all of WI knows of this site. This is the 1st I see your name anywhere. Where have you been?

jessica are you insane? You sit their with a straight face and say they should have moved some of oquenock to make room for wb? You would have been screaming bloody murder. You are the biggest hypocrite in west Islip, and I think you need to to take your meds. Btw variety show? PTA meetings? This is what you are worried about? That the kids won't be able to fit in the auditorium for your jelly bean counting contest? The schools were Built to accommodate this many students, so stop with your constant doomsday and negativity, it's old already. Band performance? When is the last time the entire student body performed on the band? Chorus? They don't, do they. How about you let the professionals worry about scheduling the buildings to accommodate the programs, it is after all what we pay them for.

I guess we differ greatly on how good the district map looks now for rezoning as I am one of the families that are being redistricted to PJ Bellew. When we were told that they were evening out all the schools I didn't have as much problem but since they choose to stuff Manetuck and Oquenock I was greatly upset that we are being sacrificed for the sake of the smaller school remaining open. My concern is that my daughter who is OK with the decision now has to go to school today and listen to all her classmates are going to Manetuck and Oquenock and thanks to the rezoning south I can't even reassure her that she see them all again in Udall!!! So for a little while why don't all the people that have NO CHANGE IN REZONING take a break and let some of us vent a little frustration. She has 7 2nd graders out of @100 that will be at PJ Bellew in Sept. not great odds for being in class in a new bldg. with ANY familiar faces.
We have been positive and I will remain positive and the one mantra I stick with is at least PJ Bellew has plenty of room but it doesn't sting any less that my child is being TOTALLY rezoned from 86% of the 2nd graders at Westbrook.

All I can say is that steam is coming out of my head right about now. I hold the past and some of the present boe accountable for this. Just to think that all the spending they did on so many unrealistic things, in this district, because it's a bedroom community, not considering that there is a REAL ceiling on spending they needed to respect and a reserve fund they needed to maintain. IDIOTS!

All of West Islip has seen and been on the receiving end of what the the "professionals" are doing to our town and our kids education. They are professionals only in the most diabolical, clueless sense.

You are correct Disney, closing two ES has never been done before in this district, it was a drastic measure taken to offset the rash of out of control spending and debt the professionals incurred. These people feign being contented and happy with this decision because they are asked to come here and be a voice of support for the lame brains who brought us to this place and time.

You don't know me so there is no reason to explain to you what I am actually like vs. what you think you know about me on here. But anyone who truly knows me knows I am anything but fair. And yes, I will continue to scream bloody murder about the disaster this town is turning into. Because they shouldn't be closing 2 Elementary schools.

And by the way "Reality Check" you will see how it is going to happen.....I hope your kid can still play the flute or whatever because wake up, the band and orchestra and chorus will now DOUBLE IN SIZE. Couldn't have that for the Middle school band and sports team and whatever else, but who cares about ES kids?
